Insurance

To revive this old thread, any further thoughts, experience on alternatives to Lockton. Their premium has gone sky high, tripling when I changed my 987.2 for a GTS4.0. I guess perhaps that they are not interested in insuring newer vehicles. (And no, I haven't made any claims or got convictions to put the premium up). furthermore, Lockton's service over the past year has been awful.

I do 4 - 5 track days a year so the track day cover is a must, I've got a quote from Mannings which is two thirds of Locktons quote.

Any bad experiences with Mannings? Any reason not to go with them?

I insured my 992 C2S with Locktons but when I changed to my 718 GT4 the premium was considerably more than Mannings and Locktons wanted me to pay for a tracker too. Having shopped around, it seems that Manning’s offer the best compromise if you want Track Day cover as I do.

Yep, I think if Mannings quote OK for you then they're a good option. They quote sky high for me I think due to post code and lack of garage, even with a tracker.

Classicline came in considerably cheaper than Mannings for me. Locktons wouldn't quote. I think those three are a decent selection that should give trackday cover, other's recommend Footman James too.

I changed to ManningUK when I took the GT4 last year, good all round (unlimited track days) policy and no tracker required

Subsequent contacts for other vehicle enquiries have ranged from being ignored to excessive

Nervously awaiting renewal ...

Recently contacted Footman James for a GT4 quote ... offered several policy types none of which matched the terms of last years ManningUK

I used ManningUK for a few years and was happy with their service but switched to ClassicLine some time ago and have been more than happy with them. My CS is now nearly 12-years old and their quotes have always been competitive considering track day cover and full UK and European breakdown cover is included (not a problem with your newer cars of course). When I had to make a claim after a kamikaze cat incident the claim was handled very efficiently, and although their approved repairer was for Aston Martins there was no objection to me using a Porsche recommended repairer.

My premium only increased by £7 this year and now I also have my old Mk5 Golf GTi insured with them too, again for a competitive price when taking into account that full breakdown cover is included which is becoming increasingly expensive for older cars.

As has been said, Insurance is a bit of a lottery and shopping around is a must.

I've recently bought a 981 CGTS and was pleasantly surprised with LV. Came in at less than £400 plus £44 cashback from Quidco. I'm mid-40s, 15yrs+ NCD (1 x windscreen claim), live on the south coast and insured fully comp with business miles, legal fees included and for 8k miles a year.

Cheaper than my old 520D!

LV : quite a few of the brokers are using them under the LV Broker - ABC Insurance banner

When recently searching quotes for a non Porsche all bar one broker used them to good effect, being the cheapest for the same cover. ManningUK however were 50% higher for that same cover ? !

I got my CS and my daily insured together with LV for less than £500. I do have another 10 years on you though. I had to make a claim a year ago (not the CS) and they couldn't have been more helpful. No track day cover though :(

It all depends on your age me 76 ,post code ,mileage ,accidents etc I tried locktons and mannings as recommended .I contacted both and said no track cover required and had 3 cars to quote for where they interested yes we can quote .Skoda Yeti 2lrs L&K 8 k a year 15yr ncd protected left on drive .Boxster 981 2.7 4k a year 15 yr ncd protected garaged .Boxster 987 Spyder 4k a year 8yrs ncd protected garaged. inc my wife driving .AVIVA £630 .35 inc legal cover loan car etc .Locktons £1670 Manning £1250. that is 5 years now with them have always been competitive .some of the comparison site wanted over £350 just for the Skoda .

time for my renewal so I thought I’d try Manning. What a waste of 20mins! They must have been smoking wacky backy before they can back to me with a quote of £1700 to insure my base cayman with no track day cover. I got the impression they didn’t want my business and how PCGB can still have them down as an affiliate with prices like that I’ll never know.

up to now the winner is AXA with a renewal of £519 with all mods declared.

since I revived the thread I suppose I should bring it up to date with my experience after Lockton quoted an outrageous amount and Mannings came in at two thirds of this. I had a discussion with Lockton about this and they said that they’d misquoted and the premium should be substantially lower, in fact it was somewhat lower than Mannings. So Lockton kept my business this year, but I shows the need to shop around and not just accept the first quote they give.

ManningUK renewal came in at plus 50% ... £922 for 8,000 p.a. with unlimited track-days, only £50 less for no track-days

Reducing to 5,000 p.a. saw £800 / Track-day excess had increased from 10 to 15%

Reason for increase - excessive GT4 claims leading to an elevation in risk classification / grouping. Up until then the GT4 was included with all other Caymans

Went with Classicline for 5,000 p.a. = £595 (unlimited club track-days / max. of six with others) / Track-day excess is 10%

ABC (LV) quoted a decent £495 for 8,000 p.a. without any track cover

I've recently taken my insurance out with Highway (LV) through Chris Knott at a cost of £475 with an excess of £650 which I've also insured for £40. I'm 47 gusting 48 with 20yrs NCB, 9000 miles pa. I don't need track day cover and no tracker required. They were not interested in declaring any modifications or factory options unless it increased horsepower but I told them of the factory fitted options anyway.

Manning wanted £900, er no, and Admirals renewal was £625 which I also declined.

If you decide to buy GAP, try ALA for a quote and use the code MSE25 and you’ll get 25% discount.
A very useful thread and thanks Scrounger for the discount code which is still valid this morning. I’ve shopped around and ALA appear most competitive for GI.

For my incoming GTS arriving in December, I've been quoted a joint FC policy for sub £400 by Admiral with legal cover etc (age 50, 20+yrs NCB, clean licence, off street parking). Ok if you don’t require track cover. I need to read the policy to be sure, and that’s with £450 total excess btw. I still can’t quite believe it.

I watched Martin Lewis recently which some of you may have seen, interestingly he recommended searching 21-23 days in advance of your renewal date. This is apparently the sweet spot as insurers consider those that renew closer to their renewal date to be a greater risk and therefore charge a higher premium (in some case 25-30% higher!) This may explain why my quote was so competitive.

Thanks all.

Gap insurance is a curious issue in this market. A real example - Cupra 300 Estate, stolen when 14 months old. Insurance company pays out a sum that is £1000+ higher than the original purchase price when new, but still not enough to buy a replacement of similar age, even if one were available. I have no experience of gap insurance but wonder what it would, or would not, deliver in this instance. My guess is that it would have been a wasted policy in this situation.

Thats a really good point John, thank you. I will check the definition of ’gap’ with the provider, I.e does the gap cover the current market value if higher than the original purchase value. One would hope so as the whole point is to cover a gap. I’ll call them next week and see what they say.

ANy recommendations for a GAP insurer? I've run a few quotes and for £350ish it really is worth the piece of mind in the unlikely event. If insurers still pay above the cost of the car you haven't lost anything except waiting time for a new one.

Jase,

When I purchased my 987.2 12-years ago the dealer included 3-years (I think?) GAP insurance FOC. Times have changed but it might be worth asking the question.

Probably cheaper than a tracker and yearly subscriptions too!
