Insurance

My GT4 is £230 for the year garaged on Admiral multicar 500 miles, I have also taken out GP Insurance

500 miles ... p.a. ?

Multicar ... assuming that it is a family policy, can the cars be used simultaneously ?

Sorry Andrew, 5000 miles :) yes we can use as and when, includes the wife and commuting to a single place of work.

Due to collect the car (GTS4.0) this Friday so shopping around for quotes. Tried all the usuals (manning, classicline, Adrian flux, NFU), all coming in around £900-£1100.

onto the comparison sites and cheapest so far is Churchill via confused.com at £450.

I’m 50, nil points / accidents, car garaged, social driving only, 7k miles (I intend to drive her this first year!), 14yrs NCD.

I’d like to get under £400 ideally, but think I’ll take the Churchill policy this time around.

Definitely take the Churchill policy. I did an example quote for my GTS a few weeks ago and it was £1000. Doubt you'll get it cheaper than £450. I've the same criteria as you apart from the garage.

Hi All

It seems insurance quotes are going up considerably, I have just sold a 718 Spyder which was costing me £800 with ClassicLine including trackday insurance and 7500 miles.

I have a new GT3 coming in March and have just been quoted £1850 by ClassicLine with Track cover and 5000 miles. I was expecting £1200 from a previous conversation with them but this is way above my expectation.

Does anyone have any recent quotes ideally with trackday cover.

Nothing has changed as far as my conditions are concerned no points , no accidents etc.

Thanks

Geoff,

See some insurance stories.

The one big change in your Spyder to GT3 will be insured value.

I have booked 8 track days with another 4 still to book this year. I don't know how many track days you will do each year but taking road insurance as part of a family fleet and buying one-off days can be less expensive for occasional track cover. Try Manning for track day only cover.

Good luck,

Ralph

Ralph,

Thank you, very useful, it does seem to follow a theme, it is particularly difficult these days if you want Track day insurance.

I have now got ClassicLine down to £1430 but it is with a £1000 excess and 5000 miles. I only do 3 or 4 track days per year and have also asked Mannings who told me as you that I would get 2 quotes to cover road use and track so we will see how that compares.

I do wonder if I should accept that at my age I should just give up on the track days as I don't chase lap times, for me it is just an opportunity to drive the car at speeds I would get locked up on the road. As well as the saving in insurance there is the cost of consumables which can be expensive I will probably give it another year and then see where we stand.

Thanks again Ralph.

Geoff

Geoff,

Just to say that I read this BBC News piece recently which said that since the back end of last year car insurance premiums have gone up by 8%, buoyed-up by paint and energy prices.

Good luck with your search, but remember that as well as trackday cover, your ClassicLine policy does include full UK and European breakdown assistance should you require it.

Thanks Jeff,

It just seems that options for high end cars is pretty small and therefore those prepared to offer the cover can dictate the cost.

I'm often told that insurance costs should equate to 1% of value so on that basis I should be happy with the cost.

But Admiral and other companies within that group offer road only insurance for £800 but I don't want track days uncovered so I guess the answer is in my hands.

Out of interest is classic line and other insurers mandating a tracker?

also I get admiral is cheaper but is the quality of the cover comparable in the event of a claim to say locktons or classic line? More thinking they would use Porsche to repair the vehicle and guaranteed value rather than European cover and breakdown

Re Classic Line & trackers, my policy endorsement is:

We will not cover you under this section of your policy for theft or attempted theft unless: a) your car is fitted with a vehicle-tracking system we approve and the system was turned on and working properly at the time of the theft or attempted theft; b) you have paid all your subscriptions; and c) you tell the vehicle-tracking system company about the theft within 4 hours of you (or anyone else in charge of your car) being told your car has been stolen.

I think it’s all relative.

You’ve got from an expensive car that is less track focused to a very expensive car that is all about racing so you have to admit those 2 points will significantly increase your premium.

No tracker required here ... when I was initially researching the tracker requirement I found that it was based on the value so I just set it accordingly (car was 4.5 years old). Car is garaged at home

Something that is too often overlooked when buying insurance is now well will they look after you if the unthinkable happens. When the unthinkable did happen to me I was very glad indeed that I had paid the small extra to be covered by Lockton.

Not only did they act swiftly, efficiently and kindly to sort out and settle the claim with no hassle at all, but they also arranged for a replacement loan Boxster to be delivered to my home so that I could still lead the two trips to Scotland that we were running for R7. You don't buy the cheapest tyres, nor the cheapest oil for your Porsche; you normally want the best so why should insurance be different?

I am told by ClassicLine that the Tracker limit was £100k, my Spyder value was £99k but this year it has been reduced so I would need a tracker with them this year for the Spyder. A tracker is a requirement for the GT3 my conditions are the same as Ralph's, I asked the question what happens if Vodafone tracking is not working as in the past I have forgotten the fob and I did not get a call. I rang and they could not see the car moving, ClassicLine said they would expect the insurers not to pay out and I would need to take up with tracker company which is a bit of a worry. My concern with trackers is that if my car is stolen and recovered probably damaged would I want it back.

Tracker is a standard fit on the 718, it just needs activating and you pay an annual subscription however, I've just looked at the 2 year package they do which comprises of remote services, tracker and safety services.

You can't really buy them separately apart from the remote services which for a 2 year subscription is £180 or £99 yearly. The tracker and safety services can be bought together for £235 yearly or £450 2 yearly. If you want all 3, the cost for 2 years is £476 so making it a bit of a bargain really. That's if the tracker works and they don't have to take the dash apart to fix it.
