Anyone running wheel shims?
I have some new wheels (996 C4) and the fronts don't clear the hub centres, after looking on rennlist it seems I need 4mm shims to allow them to clear. Anyone running shims and have any feedback? Did you fit longer studs?

Aplolgies for pic quality but camera phone was used as batteries were flat in my normal cam. It seems (unusually) Porscheshop may be the cheapest for shims (checked jasmine and type 911) has anyone bought some from them? any comments on quality?

And a before shot - not sure which set will become road wheels and which set track, though my riginal fronts are 968 7.5" the 'new' ones are only 7"

Both sets could do with a minor refurb, paint mostly, any photoshop experts for when I get some decent pics and need to decide colours?

what "et" are your wheels fornt and back. Its printed on the wheel face either side of the valve, eg "9 (valve!) 52", which means 9j wide, offset of 52 mil.

I run 993 8 j wheels et 30 on th back of my s2, the matching fornts (from a 993 carrear 4 s) were 7 j et 55. backs stick out mroe than the fronts so I am looking to space the fornts out for looks a bit, and aim for 6 mil spacers, which I am hoping will work ok with the original studs.

As a rule of thumb, with steel botls and studs, you shoul have a minimum of 8 full turns of the whels bolts / nuts, before they begin to pinch up. with the ally porker nuts, it may be better to have bit more, but 8 terms is what the wheel manufacturers told me then I was after some trci offsets for my golf.

Aparently the standard studs are ok up to 7mm, I have gone with 5mm from type 911, will see if its enough clearance,

I bought some 5mm from them a few years ago when I thought I needed them for some Boxster wheels I didn't buy [8|]

Certainly looked fine to me, but I never used them and just sent them back

I'd heard "ok upto 7mm" before too.

I run7mm shims on the front and no complaints so far (didn't increase any tramlining or bump reaction as I feared either).

Car has been at the indy several times for front disc warranty replacements, and he hasn't raised any alarm at the shims either.

Tony, if you were a bit concerned then you could always get a set of the steel motorsport nuts from Bert and just use them whenever you put the C4 wheels on.

They are much cheaper than the alloy road nuts and as they are open ended you can see how much thread you are covering.

I understood that I should be running 7mm shims with my fronts (7" 55) but am a little nervous to loose that length of thread on an alloy wheel nut. Perhaps I will compromise at 4mm [8|]

I comprimised on 5mm and went for the slightly more expensive option from type 911 who assure me they are better quality than the cheaper ones (but then they would wouldn't they :) )

Sounds like the best approach.

At least with Type 911 you might get better quality as opposed to just more expensive.

Baby WUF runs 7mm spacers on the front to accomodate 17" hairdresser rims, otherwise they don't clear the wheel bearing 'dome' cover.

I should have bought proper wheels really ... [:D] [:D]

WUF runs 7mm spacers at the rear (and now 245/40/18 P-Zero Rosso at the front)

I tried 7mm shims on my turbo - but took them off as i wasn't happy with the amount of thread left, which wasn't even enough to go all the way up an open ended nut.

They did make the wheels look good though [;)]

A cheap fix Paul, would be to use the long studs and spacers from the rear of a series one car, on the front. Of course, you might end up with a little too much then.
