Wheel Shims

Mine (to run the 996 wheels) are 5mm using original studs, from type 911 cos at the time (2006) they looked better made than some,

Similar then to the spacer kit on my race car for both front and rear. Its 20mm shims and a set of very long studs.

A cheap fix Paul, would be to use the long studs and spacers from the rear of a series one car, on the front. Of course, you might end up with a little too much then.

Cheers guys.

I've just picked up a cheap set of 16" Boxster wheels to use with winter tyres and I know they needed some shims to clear the calliper.

However when I picked up the wheels last night the previous owner also had an S2 and when I mentioned I had one too he gave me the shims he already had - 3mm [:)]

Result! hhen I got my 17" 996 wheels various people said either 3 or 5mm shims it was to clear the wheel centre though.
Tony

Can anyone enlarge on which wheels require which shims, please? I have a set of original 986 16" wheels was I was going to use with Winter tyres, but I had presumed that they would fit straight on.

Now I think about it, Ive fitted them onto a series two car, but not one with big brakes. I only have one pair of 9m shimes, which are going to e too large for the existing studs, I think.

9m will be far too big for any studs! (will also cause a problem with width restrictors)[;)], 9mm will be far too big for the existing ones, 7mm is the biggest you can safely go

Can anyone answer my question about shims, please?

Was waiting to hear from Paul as to whether his were really needed for the brakes or also the hub centres, but other than 996 wheels (pic on the wheel thread) I cant help, sorry!

Thanks Tony. I have 996 wheels fitted too, but theyre going to be far too fat for Winter, I think.

I'm still waiting for the front winter tyres to be delivered so haven't fitted them yet. They should arrive today or tomorrow so when I fit them onto the original 16" Boxster wheels I'll let you know
