The "Cayman owners and track days" 2021 thread

I will certainly try to have fun. Thanks :D.

It’s not really about the £500 for the sake of the rear toe links, it’s more about me appreciating the change they would bring about. I haven’t really driven the car that hard yet, so I’m eager to see how it feels at Blyton this Friday. I want to see for myself how the back end feels under heavy braking, then I think I’ll get a better understanding of the potential to make more changes to the rear.

The nothing stopping me installing them before Silverstone :)

Had a great day at Blyton, really great little circuit, a bargain actually at £150 for the day. Good place to get to know the car I think before stretching it’s legs further. Shame there isn’t any fuel on site, and the nearest station we found didn’t have super unleaded! oh well.

With the suspension in sport mode I didn’t get the squirreling from the rear end much, at all, perhaps only when really heavy onto the brakes in the chicane on the back straight. Perhaps I’m not driving the car hard enough? Both tyres and brakes got very hot though, so much so I think I cooked my TPMS sensors… see attached! Speaking of pressures I think I made the mistake of not letting quite enough air out in the morning, found the rears had crept up to about 36 in the afternoon, something to learn from and keep in mind. Those cup 2s can get very hot it seems.

I think it was TDT who said the buckets are fine until you’re in there with a helmet, and I found that to be the case, just pushing my head forward too much in the seat. Seat brackets perhaps next on the list of things to do.

Ill post up a video from the Track Precision app shortly in the next post. 👍🏻

Track Precision App is fun. Need to have more of a play with it, it didn't have Blyton in as a circuit so I simply tapped "Set Start/Finish" on the app and it mapped the circuit from there, worked a treat. Couple of things to note, the video overlay export comes out in KM/h, despite showing as MPH in playback, and I had timing disabled but again the video export seems to ignore my preferences here!

I was a Blyton too, and had a great day.

Unfortunately my Track Precision App decided to misbehave and stopped connecting mid morning, and I hadn't realised. At least I had my dash cam footage.

The app shows my speed in mph on my phone, but if I export the dat to the app on my iPad it is in kmh. Ive raised this with app support and they don't know why. I've had a number of pleasant emails from them, and the problem is now with the team in Germany.

I have a couple of half decent photos of your car, if you'd like them them send me a PM with your email address and I'll send them to you.

Just booked Knockhill on 15th July, anyone else going ??

I've wanted to do Knockhill for a while, just a shame it's so far from me. Plan to do it next year. Next TD for me is Silverstone on the 2nd of August. (Gives me enough time to find out where that squeaking is coming from on the rear suspension). Anyone else there?

Good afternoon all,

There is a group of six of us from Region 5 going to the Silverstone TD, we can’t wait...

I'm going to come and spectate, may even bring my lid in case I can jump in someone else's car. I think I'm also on the reserve list in case anyone drops out.

I thought you were on holiday for Silverstone Dave?

Not to worry, bring your helmet, you're more than welcome to jump in my passenger seat for some laps. Though you'll have to share seat time with my Aussie mate :ROFLMAO:.

I do love Silverstone, many happy memories!

I was supposed to be in Greece, but I really don't see that happening any more! We'll just bump the flights on. Again.

Sounds like a plan then Oli, cheers! I think TDT is also booked on for Silverstone so I might also try and blag a passenger ride in his beefed up 981 GT4 to see what it's like...

Well that was fun in 26+ degrees heat!

This afternoon I swapped over the wheels on my GT4 at home using a trolley jack, some jacking point pucks, some wheel chocks and a pair of wheel locating pins: https://www.fvd.net/us-en/FVD72157130/wheel-locating-pin-simplifies-wheel-and-spacer-installation-m14-x-15-63-inches.html

Getting the wheels off is dead easy, putting them back on again (especially stupidly wide 20" wheels and tyres which weigh a ton!) was much more difficult. The first wheel I did (a rear) got a bit scuffed on the rear rim face as I tried to manouvre it into place. I ended up with a technique of having the car just off the ground and lining the wheel up with the pins at an angle, then tilting/lifting the wheel onto the pins. The other three wheels went on fine after that.

Anyhow, you can't see my minor scuffs with the wheel fitted and they'll be refurbished at some point anyway :ROFLMAO: My Satin Platinium wheels actuall have a few scuffs from tyre changes and a puncture repair anyway, so it seems it's par for the course - even for the pros!

A quick test drive and all is well, and the Huf TPMS sensors I bought at around £40 each work like a charm - not a bad £700 saving on the OEM Porsche parts!!!

These home built wheel dollies also help moving the wheel off and back on. I made two as I had excess shelving available for the base and two sizes of dolly wheels in the garage. Only one actually needed, the smaller wheeled one works best for me.

I got the idea from 997 Forum FAQs (lots of good general information there)

Been there … done it Dave! After struggling with two pins I agree with Ralph that using a single pin actually makes the job easier, although I still use two pins when removing the wheel.

As you say, the wheels are surprisingly heavy and cumbersome - and the trolley will make the job easier on your back!

Sounds like a good call on the TPMS sensors.

Jeff

Cheers Jeff, nice to know I'm not alone! Sounds like two pins off, one pin on is the way to go. I'll try that next time [:D]

I appreciated an extra pair of hands when I took one of my rears off to check something, without any pins.

Did you torque the wheel bolts with a torque wrench, Dave? I believe the setting is 118 ft-lbs, but just checking as this does seem high.

Just out of interest Dave, is the recommendation now to use “dry” bolt threads? I use 130N-m with Optimoly TA compound on the threads, which was the recommendation for my 2009 987.2 CS, but I think it was changed to 160N-m (118lbf-ft as Ollie says) without thread lubricant about halfway through 987.2 production.

I have to say that I never have any problems removing my wheel bolts and there are no corrosion issues.

Jeff

There's nothing in the manual about that Jeff, and my bolts were dry and they've been off and on a few times so I suspect dry bolts is the standard.
