The "Cayman owners and track days" 2021 thread

Using PASM setting will help to a point - because this will control the dampers by stiffening. But eventually the loads are such that the behaviour still presents... but nothing to worry about initial i expect. Depends on how hard you going.

Ref aero - no reason not to have a play I'd suggest. I figure there's no point having the features on the car and never playing with them.... may as well have saved the money.

These are still not Aero/DownForce cars and really its about balancing aero performance and negating lift... this will give stability through medium to fast corners. Drag penalty is a couple mph at 125+mph - and by the time yours reaching those speeds in these caysters - you're nearly back into a braking zone anyway. Drag is only small factor on the biggest GP circuits... Silverstone in the UK with Hanger and Wellington and then on the continent like Spa with Kemmel.

The one thing i do have a problem with though is wing risers.... I want to see proper data. I would only do what is done on the CS race car or the RS whenever it arrives.

Silverstone is my first day of the year and a track I think I know reasonably well, I'm excited to see how the car feels through, Abbey, Copse and Maggots, I'm hoping I can carry a fair bit more speed but we shall see. Personally I don't like wing risers purely due to the way they look.

Thanks for the info TDT, really informative post. I had booked into CG based on the good things I'd heard via word of mouth and your comments there echo it which is all reassuring. I'm actually booked in towards the end of May in the hope that some of the restrictions may be lifted and that I can be in the workshop with them. I don't wish to make this thread GT4 specific, and to keep to the spirit of the thread, would you also recommend them for anyone tracking their car? Is there much adjustability on non GT Caymans, for example?

I have heard comments around the rear getting loose under heavy breaking, but it's great to have the explanation of why. Seem to remember an Autocar review said putting PASM into sport helped to dial this out, how much of that I'll notice.. I guess we'll see.

What are you thoughts on putting the car into the full Aero setup? I can't see any reason not to from my reading around.

Re CG and rear behaviour under heavy braking, CG are good and their setup fixed the rear - it's alignment, not PASM Sport.

See

I'm taking my GT3 there end-April

EDIT: meant to include quote of TDTs post re GT4s losing odd gears and reverse. (Hi Tyrone 🙋‍♂️ - hope you’re keeping well, maybe catch up at Silverstone again this year?)

I had that happen on my 987 in 2019, I posted on the Cayman OC about it here:

https://www.caymanoc.com/forums/topic/1921-more-woes-floppy-gear-lever-broken-cable/?tab=comments#comment-17463

it was a small black plastic linkage (there’s a photo in the thread) on the top of the GBx at the rear that had simply ‘popped off’ as I down shifted (not on track).

solution (once I found the problem) was to simply Jack up, wedge a mallet in ‘above’ the linkage between the GBx and heat shield (so you have something solid to lever against) and then used a large flat bladed screwdriver to lever down in the disconnected end of the linkage to pop it back onto the ‘spigot’ / ball joint it had detached from - it’s a forced-fit item.

And on the ‘which trackday shoes?’, I’ve ordered some Sparco imola GP - they’re a more subtle looking ‘leisure‘ driving trainer than an outright race boot / brightly coloured track shoe, but with the rounded heel, thin semi-rigid and smooth rubber sole so should do the job nicely.

I will report back upon first wear at Bedford GT on 3rd April. 👍🏻

Hi Dave,

Thank you for starting this thread, it has reminded me of why I joined the club and it is nice to read all of the friendly and helpful posts, much better than some of the threads in the members only section of the forum at the moment...

We have been busy at home over the last six weeks having some building work done, so my Cayman has been neglected and moved to a friends garage as ours has been filled with furniture and building materials, and I can’t wait to get it back next weekend when the work should be finished to get some miles on it before the track day season (hopefully) starts.

i’m still a bit of a novice at track days but I did do two last year in my 992 and one in my daily driver (Golf R) and am really looking forward to improving my driving skills and enjoying my Cayman on the track this year, Covid permitting. So the tips and advice on your thread have been really useful and are very much appreciated.

I have confirmed the following track days so far this year: Anglesey - 15 May Silverstone - 2 August Oulton Park - 29 October

I will probably also book onto one of the Blyton Park day’s once they have been announced.

i hope to meet some of you soon.

Martin

Nice one Martin. I wondered why I hadn't seen your car knocking about, we're not a million miles away in location.

I'm still weighing up doing Silverstone so may see you there, but definitely at Oulton. I may also see you at the Gold Cup I guess?

Hi Dave,

Yes, I have been missing the car, it’ll soon be out and about again.

Some of the R5 members are going to go to the Classic over the preceding weekend and are staying over for an additional night on the Sunday to do the track day on the Monday, if you want to join us, you’d be welcome.

I’m also in the process of looking into whether it might be possible for us to host an R5 track day, so watch this space...

in the meantime, I’m planning on going to the Gold Cup too so should hopefully see you then if not before.

Cheers Martin. The Classic isn't really my thing, but thanks for the invite. An R5 track day could be interesting so I'll keep an eye out for that for sure.

If spectators are allowed I may see you at Anglesey actually...

Martin,

It must be very frustrating for you having a shiny new GT4 and not to be able to use it! Hopefully we’ll all be able to get out and about in our cars in the coming months.

Just to mention that although it doesn’t feature on the Club’s official track day list, R4’s Blyton Park track day is scheduled for 28th May; details here:

https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1081147

I’m considering attending myself but will need overnight accommodation, so I’m waiting to see what pans-out in that respect before committing.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

It certainly is, its been gone for almost two months and I’m suffering from withdrawal symptoms...

Thank you for the heads up on Blyton, the end of May is looking quite busy for me work wise, but I will see what I can do. Last year a few of us stayed at the nearby Hilton the night before which was fine. If I can’t escape work in May, I’m hoping Region 18 might also put on their track day there later in the year.

Martin

Three of us from Region 5 have just booked and confirmed the Blyton Park Track Day, which at £150 seems to me to be great value for money. We have two GT4’s and a GT3 attending so it should be great fun.

Great stuff Martin!

I've just received an email from Mandy at the club to tell me the Snetterton track day has been moved from 9 June to 25 August, which is a shame as I was going to attend in the middle of a week's holiday in the area. Ah well, I guess Donington will be my first track day instead...

Hey Martin, do you know who the organiser is? Might give my insurer a ring and see if they'll cover it.

Thanks Martin, I've booked it, will give Classicline a call tomorrow and hopefully they'll cover it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained [:)]

You booking into a hotel the night before? I'd stay with my parents but the GT4 won't get down their lane...

Hi Oli,

Yes a number of us have booked into the Hilton Pines Hotel, which is not far away. The current cost is £74 for the night and you would be welcome to join us over a bite to eat and a beer.

Martin
