The "Cayman owners and track days" 2021 thread

Thanks Martin, I've booked it, will give Classicline a call tomorrow and hopefully they'll cover it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained [:)]

Oli,

I’m with ClassicLine and have attended a few R4 Blyton track days; no problems. Just let them know the date and they’ll issue a covernote for the event.

Jeff

Fantastic, thanks Jeff. I'll give them a call tomorrow. Already booked it and the hotel, really looking forward to getting back to normality. I think Blyton will be a good circuit to get started with the GT4 on (thought not one I know the layout of), and as luck would have it CG are setting my car up the week before [:)]

I like Blyton Oli. It’s a short, flat but technical track with lots of twists and turns - definitely not a power circuit, which suits me fine. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, more so if CG have just set-up your car.

I’ve always enjoyed my days there with R4 even when once it bucketed it down (see my avatar!), and it’s great value … especially since any amount of tuition is free!

Jeff

I'm trying to find a game that has it as a track, but no luck so far. I like to have a little run around in Assetto Corsa or PCars2 just to learn the layout before I go, I find it helps.

Yep, it did strike me as great value, I hope they still do tuition but not sure how they could be in the car with you now?

Driving a couple laps on the sim does help in informing you about which way around a circuit goes.... very valuable - I don't think Blyton is on any of the titles.

Just watch a few laps on youtube.... that does help... https://youtu.be/HIMlJxCtE5c

Here is the 981 GT4 on Evo TCOTY 2015 around Blyton.

Layout is a little bit different - he uses the full back straight... where as last time i was there with a Ginetta G55 - we had to use the chicane.

Don't forget it's fun too. Though I still can't master Druids @ Oulton on PCARS2...

Thanks TDT, he's really going for it there too!

What about a thread simply for posting up which Track days folk have booked so we know who is going? I would like to try hosting a Zoom call prior to an event which could be useful for those going for the first time, learning from others who have been to that circuit before.

Once spectators are allowed we can hopefully do more.

John

Someone who's going to the next scheduled track day could start a thread for folks to post in for just that day? Might be easier than trying to manage all track days in one thread. This one can serve for general advice, the specific threads for meets/arrangements etc?

You might be better off posting on the Club’s Trackday Forum section so as to link up and share with a larger group.

Just booked for R3 @ Croft - September 22nd ... including a garage if people wish to store their `baggage`

Did not start a separate thread given that it`s a while away yet

Just to say a big thank you from this lurker for this excellent thread! (used to be a member but had to can it due to COVID etc).

I'll give a +1 for Blyton as a good/cheap/fun shakedown track. When I was last doing trackdays a few years back - in my Mk3 Golf, pre-987.1 - a couple of us went there prior to a Ring/Spa double-header.

Whilst my buddies were testing their go-faster remaps etc, I spend the same on 1:1 instruction all day. That was the best £500 I have ever spent on a car. I would highly recommend. It's another level from any included instruction or 20/40 min session based instruction.

It made such a difference.

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers for that, I'm certianly going to look into further training once I've got a couple of track days under my belt [:)]

Dave ... have you fitted up the new wheels, sensors and Cup 2`s yet ?

Hi Andrew,

I haven't I'm afraid. With the weather turning it's made stick to my original plan of only using the Cup2s for track days. Sometime in July I'll probably throw them on and go for a run to see if the TPS sensors work OK before my first track day at Donington in August...

Pete and Chris at CenterGravity did a great job setting the car up, very knowledgeable and patient with me. Pete thought I would feel the changes as soon as I hopped in and drove away... I did, she turns in more eagerly and feels more responsive at the wheel. Was also great to be in there with them as they were doing the work and get a good nosy under the car. This is what I'm now running.

Rear camber is maxed out now without the adjustable toe links, a sinch at £500, we shall see after a "seasons" worth of track daying if I need to make any changes. Overall I'm very happy how they've set it up and think it's a great base to start getting some seat time in. I can't say enough about how knowledgeable they both are, lots of good knowledge about what to expect on the track too. First TD is this Friday over at Blyton, can't wait.

Looking good Oli, they added a few shims at the front by the look of it - probably 4mm or so to get the -2 degrees? That's pretty much how I had my car for the last six months. It works really well [:D]

I've gone to the next stage as I mentioned on my "modifications complete" thread and currently have this which feels really, really solid:

Yep, 5mm of shimmage at the front, I want to run a few TD's with it and see how it feels so I've got a good baseline before changing anything else (if I even need to).

How's the tramlining with 0 toe?

Oli

It's OK actually - a little bit here and there if the road is really dodgy, otherwise fine. However, I'm very used to driving my wife's modded mk3 Focus RS which is very sensitive to road surface changes so I probably don't notice issues as much as other people!

This looks really good Oli and similar to what the guys at CG set on my car for its initial geo (I was able to go a little further at the time as I did already have toe links), and sounds like you have begun on the path like i did.

Can't say enough good things about CG.

I ran -2.2 and -1.8 on my 981 GT4 pyro tested to be right for me for a fast road car which could do track days ok. (I was told to do -2 rear but imo that's TOO much I found and went -1.8 which was perfect.)

I would do the rear toe links NOW, just less hassle over all and you remove the nasty rear steer effects under brakes with oem rubber.

Track days if you take every thing into account are £££ these days , I est £2k to £2.5k a day all in if you are honest about it all. So £500 to get the car more balanced is peanuts. I would go -1.7 degrees with -2 camber and do it ASAP.

have fun :)
