New Suspension, KW-V3?

Kw's are about £1300 odd alone without any fitting or labour. Andy at Promax says just that, see if you can drop the car enough first, if not then re-index, you dont want to lower the car too much as what you get in on track stability you lose in off track compliance.

RPM offered free fitting on Kw's about 5 years ago..., without indexing, geo, etc... So its not a like for like comparison.

That's probably what I am remembering - thanks for jogging the memory.

Was less than 5 years ago tho'. I've only owned my S2 just over 5 years, and it was a couple of years into ownership when this offer appeared. I remember as I fitted the Koni's to mine the summer after I bought the car, and the offer appeared the following summer.

Prices of everything are getting steeper these days. Car suspension included.

Was what Oil told me when I asked him if the offer still existed, he may have been exaggerating though.[:D]

Funnily enough, I have a friend who is head of research for a very big petrochemical company (oh, what the heck - it's Texaco). And she is incapable of typing "Oli"; her fingers naturally find "Oil", and hence every eMail she writes to me is addressed to "Oil". She's apologetic, but unrepentant!

(And yes, I suspect Oil/Oli was exaggerating. But the essence of the story is true. I think it was when the KW's were first introduced - which will put a date on it.)

It strikes me KW retains its No1 place in the league of realistic 944 Suspension modifications once again.

I have never driven on Kw, but have to agree the M030 is not compliant or refined, although it works well in dynamic terms.

The MOT centre here showed my two rears as being different but within tolerance. I removed them to find the adjustment was unequal. Its amazing the improvement from equalising them. (they are dated mid 08 and have low mileage)

I needed a new suspension set up for my project Turbo. Had a look around and worked out I couldn't afford what I wanted to buy. Ended up buying a good used set of Bilstein Escort Cup Coilovers via this forum instead. Quite pleased....

I reckon Bilstein is vastly superior to Koni, just a perception.
Now that I will strongly agree with. Unfortunately, Bilstein offerings for late 944's are limited, to say the least ...

I spoke with Andy at ProMax today and given what he and Jon (at JMG) and the majority on hear say, KWv3 does seem the best option. Andy quoted a figure of £1800 to £1900 inc vat for supplying and fitting the KWv3 stuff and generally setting it up. This does not include re-indexing, but he, Jon and I all think this is unlikely to be necessary on my car. Given that my car is for road use, and pretty poor quality UK back roads at that, the harsh MO30 set-up that is 20 years out of date and crashy seems a false economy and a bad idea. So once again I seem to be talking myself into spending yet more on this damn toy[&:]

I hear what you say, but the Promax price you just gave is potentially only £258 more than the M030 option JMG you posted in your earlier post (both with vat). Thats a hell of a lot more suspension for not much more money. For me fitting the kw's to a 944 chassis already known for its superb handling is an exciting proposition.

I suppose you have to ask yourself whether you use the car enough to justify the outlay, but if you do you could end up with a classic Porsche drivers car that's brought right up to the 21st century (in terms of handling and road holding).

Just my opinion mind.

Edd

I absolutely and definitely won't use the car enough to justify the outlay. I'll just do it because I want to. I'm unlikely to use it for more than 1000 miles in a year (mileage this year so far is 200), but if I am going to change anything, it has to be a change for the better. And like you Edd, I think that fitting KWv3 is a change for the better, whilst fitting MO30 may (in a bizarre way) be a backward step. Currently the car feels a bit dated and soft, but spending about one and a half grand to make it crashy is crazy, whilst spending a few hundred more to bring it up to date seems perfectly sensible.

The real decision is whether I do nothing at all (because if I'm not using it what does it matter how it rides), or whether I fit the KWv3 for the pleasure of knowing I've improved the car and for the better driving experience when I do take it out.

ProMax can fit me in for mid Jan, so let's see what Father Christmas brings me[;)]

Would you consider stock non-m030 suspension? Perhaps not original for the SE but a more compliant and comfortable ride and certainly change for the better, (whilst not the best).

The other alternative is to get the kw's fitted and then make sure the car is used more often to justify your investment, at least you'd have fun!

Steve, the suspension is genuine Porsche Bilstein B6 Turbo cup shocks so adjustable for spring pre load and rebound I think.

Speaking of top mounts, but somewhat randomly: do M030 strut mounts and normal strut mounts differ dimensionally? Im trying to establish whether super-expensive M030 parts can be replaced with aftermarket adjustable types.

Simon

I think they are dimensionally the same Simon. All top mounts I have seen have looked the same, could be just a higher shore value rubber again.
The Bilsteins use the standard top mount, they have a progressive spring fitted as well. Will get some pictures today and post up. Very nice looking pieces of kit.

Car now booked in for January at Promax for fitting of KW-V3. Anyone have opinions on ride height and settings used for fast road + occasional track?
