Engine Rebuild Finally Underway

Looking forward to inlet pics (large) on the BB they looked lurvely!

PS: Congrats Grandpa! [:D]

Few examples during the years with friends. Check out my friend Pete's shirt style. Everyone should work with 951's with "clean" white shirt. Since Pete flies Airbus A340-300 as his profession, it's good to have a possibility to re-use uniform shirts [:D]

That turbo is massive - was sudden boost that what killed the door?

No real work done on the engine during the week but have been doing a little bit after work on bits and pieces. Mainly refurbishment work and more exhaust wrapping. Excuse the rubbish Blacckberry photos but you will get the idea.

Inlet manifold painted along with the hard boost tubes.

Camshaft tower fully refurbished and painted ready to go back on.

Forgot to ask. Before I take sump off and pistons out this weekend does anyone know what size/type of fastener is on the conrods? That way I can stock it in first rather than have to stop the job and go looking for one.

Not a bad day today managed to get a fair bit done inbetween the sodding rain. The engine is now just about totally stripped. Just a few bitts to tend to like removing the AOS and the oil cooler housing but feeling a lot better now. Feel as though I have crested the hill. Can't say it's been plain sailing though. The old girl has put up a good fight but submitted in the end.

The crossmember and steering rack finally give in.

And finally the pistons are liberated!!!

Hold on didn't there used to be an engine in there []

Good progress Rob, esp given the weather. Sorry couldn't be there to help (again!) Loving the cam tower [8D]

Well done Rob, you're making good time there. Now that the pistons are out, what condition are the bores in? Have you come across any obvious reasons for the oil useage?

Paul the bores were in surprisingly good nick. There was only one small lip to speak of really on number 1. Even then I only had to give the piston a very slight podge from undrneath with a bit of sawn off broom handle. I learnt that in engineering school. The rest were practically lip free and the piston just popped straight out. As for the oil usage I would say it's a combination really. Worn rings and I definitely know the valve stem oil seals need replacing as there was some oil collected on the top of some of the valaves when I whipped the intake manifold off. I am also attributing some to leaks. There looks to have been seapage around the underneath of the oil cooler and the rear of the sump. There is also a lot under the AOS but as this is directly under the oil filler cap it is a usual suspect for oil gathering. In any case they will all be coming off as I have a full bottom end gasket kit supplied by ProMax.

Rob,
you prefer Asda Pistons or Morrisons Pistons [8|]
your engine looks to be in excellent underlying condition
nice Bores, crank journals, and Pistons are clean.

If you look closely they came numbered as well those bags. Another trick I learned in engineering school. Pick up numbered plassy bags from the supermarket for your pistons [;)] Seriously though George I was really pleased with the condition also. I think the old girl will be good for another 163k after the rebuild. A real credit to Dr Porsche [:)]

That turbo is massive - was sudden boost that what killed the door?

That engine is a 3.0L with Holset SX40. It was a rainy weather what killed this car. A lot of water on the road and then it was suddenly hugging down some Finnish forest [:(]
This was a very nice 951. It was badly damaged, so it was not able to save it. My friend drives now a 996 with Turbo engine, so his current ride is more or less similar than GT2.

Looking great Rob! I would have offered to help out but it's been 'mad-busy' lately with work trips abroad and over-time. I'm on holiday next week, but I'll see if I'm free some time the week after.

I can't wait to see it when it's all back together! It'll be stunning [8D]

Good reference pics. Well done on the tear down. Are you planning on lapping the bores before you fit the pistons with new rings?

why on earth would you dream of doing that?

perhaps you are unaware of the damage it would do the the carefully etched surface of the alusil Block.

The block is near perfect, in fact it is better than new and obviously cared through its life with good oils, maintenance and careful use.

Well George it appears that many guys stateside lightly hone the alusil cylinders with scotchbrite pads and an-30/sunnen honing paste - I was wondering if Rob was planning to do something similar or if he was going to leave them be?

Best to leave well alone anywhere near Alusil! If it looks OK with no pickup, just give them a degrease to get rid of any carbon buildup at the top and oil them!

Hi Rob

It's been many, many months since I last posted on this forum but seeing your thread I thought I'd say hi and wish you good fortune with your rebuild. I'm also in a similar state with my car although due to the work/mods planned I had to remove the engine from the car. BTW I removed my engine from the top, an easy job with the bonnet removed and preferable working like you on my drive.
Keep the updates coming in, I for one will follow them with great interest..

Oh and Hi to all the other fellow 944 owners known to me on this forum....:)

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete how the devil are you? Long time no post lol. Not any work done on the car at all today. Far too soggy [:(] Have been busy sorting out the cylinder head after work during the week. A general clean up of the head and valves. Not got round to lapping the valves yet. As for lapping the bores well the guys said it all really. I was really happy with the condition and didn't see the need for anything other than a clean up. Like they said. If it aint broke then don't fix it [;)]
