1986 951 UPGRADES ?

updated for all !

I contacted Chris Sanderson @ Loe Bank Garage and he's got a free space on Thursday to take the car in and to rectify the stalling problem when dropping to low revs fast
He will set the car up like it came out the factory - idle control valve etcc..
Also he will be changing all the belts & wp.

Must say i'm having a blast driving this 951 !

hope you all had a great weekend

hi all !

hope you haven't forgotten me lol !

i have got my 951 back from Loe Bank Motors - the bill came to around the £1300/1400 mark

i've uploaded the work that Chris has done here -

https://ibb.co/4TznhTm
https://ibb.co/n6VVWVZ

there are these few items i will buy and let him fit as they are faulty as i can get them cheaper

-Throttle valve switch – 951 606 113 00 /0280 120 400
-Cut off/ Dump valve – 993 110 357 51
-Control valve – 944 110 429 00
-Clamp – 951 110 421 04.

the car drives so so much better now, Chris is super efficient and very very good on price.
he knows these cars inside out, he took it on a few test drives and rectified all the problems.

i have also received my fiber-glass turbo nose vent panel which goes into paint next week and then i will fit

all coming together now !

best

Hi H

Well done on getting things sorted...if I may make one comment on the fibreglass panel. These things rarely if ever fit without needing some fettling to get the fit right, it's just the nature of fibreglass material. I would advise that you do a test fit before putting it into paint. Do all the remedial work required to get it looking right and then give the panel to the painters

Regards

Pete

Do you mean the throttle position sensor? If so I'd be interested how cheap you can get it for.

Hiya PSH,

thanks the car drives amazingly ! i've not got out of it all day ha !
Ahh great advice thanks so much Pete i never thought of that, ill give it a dry run tomorrow to see how if it fits weather permitting - thanks for the tip !

Including postage and duty it don't look cheap to me. Try a genuine Bosch dealer in UK/Europe.

blade7 i'll have another look around and let you know.

good news the fiber-glass turbo nose panel fit like a glove with a little room all round so perfect fit once finished paint.

pic of turbo fitted nose panel - https://ibb.co/album/RTk9Vk

it goes for painting and 3 stage machine polishing tomorrow - friday it'll be back.

best,

Like the wheels....17"? Do you know what offset they are, and if you needed spacers? I'm still on D90s, but every time tyres need replacing (as now) I wonder about Boxster wheels. The cars look so much better on 17s, I thinkl.

hi graham.webb I love the 17”s I think they sit nicely on a 951.
unfortunately I don’t know what order they are m, but ill look into it for you and yes they are with spacers. Yes I think that too a little higher rise !

thanks waylander much appreciated thanks i‘m guessing that will be a straight swap like the older ones ?

What's the ride like on 17's?
I always preferred the 15" wheels to the 16" on a 944 and find grip feels compromised on our rough UK roads.

what size blow off valve can be fitted to replace original ?

It isn't a blow off valve, not like the boy racers you see driving around town centres late at night making wooshing noises [8|][:D]

Standard setup uses a diverter or bypass valve that recirculates the boost - I believe this is due to the use of the barn-door style AFM and how it calculates the air mixture.

You can get aftermarket bypass valves - I have a Bailey DV30 I believe on mine

Had 17s on my old 944S they were great, you still have plenty of tyre on a 17 to cushion out the bumps and Porsche even approved them for aftermarket fitment to the 944 as long as the caster mounts were upgraded to the 968 items.

And what's wrong with being a 'boy racer', even if a little long in the tooth now ...:)

Anyway, dumping to atmosphere isn't just about making a nice noise, it's also about getting a cleaner burn. Recirculating valves dump back into the intake which when looking for those extra horses is a bad thing. BTW, back in the day I also had a DV30, it's a good valve if keeping the recirculating function.

I admit the sound is pretty cool - everyday is a school day I didn't know about the cleaner burn thing!

But not much point on having a proper dump valve then unless your engine is tuned? and using a non-standard management system?

Some say swapping the recirculating valve to a dump to atmosphere will cause issues due to the fact the AFM has already measured the air flow, so it will cause the engine to run rich.
I tried one and I can confirm, by the readings from the Wideband sensor that it will run rich but very briefly, because the throttle will be closed.
I went back to the recirculating valve as I didn't want my car to sound like it had a cold.

Actually a wideband sensor is a very good upgrade in my opinion, no extra power but it'll tell you pretty quickly if there's a fuelling issue.
