1986 951 UPGRADES ?

My first port of call would be the idle control valve, it lives approx in the middle under the inlet manifold, a short metal cylinder. Get someone to turn the ignition on while you listen, you should hear a click, if not it may be stuck. Try disconnecting and spray some carb cleaner in to clear it. These parts aren't cheap...you can try tapping it to get it to move.

@PSH thanks for the tip buddy, yes i will do that tomorrow, does it make that click noise when the engine is starting or when it's running ?

thanks

h

Don't start the engine, just listen for the click when turning on the ignition.

@PSH ahhh perfect thank you

should i change all the spark plugs tomorrow to eradicate them from the issue ?

h

I would...give it a full service...oil, filter, air filter....I'd also get some forte fuel cleaner and add it to the fuel....the injectors would benefit from a clean too, new seals etc...

sure i will do i've bought the parts barring the oil what do you suggest ive read any high quality - 10w60 ?

okay cool thanks ill get that ordered too

thanks

h

I'd start with the first...the second is mainly for injectors but these may get enough treatment from the first product....which covers more parts in general.

Quick update

I’ve changed the SPlugs
and air filter
oil and filter will be done at the weekend
ive also added forte petrol treatment
will give the car a blast tomorrow
and more starter fluid has arrived to try and find where the leak is !

also first week of April the 951 goes in for new belts rollers and WP

slowly but surely getting there

h

@blade7 tell me about it ! White bear garage is soo booked up ! if there are any cancelations ill slide into that spot.

h

i need to try and find this leak its killing me - the car stalls when at low revs

i drove it for a good hour or more today to let the petrol treatment kick in

tomorrow will have a look the Idle control valve see if it clicks when ignition is turned . i'll give it a few good knocks with a rubber mallet.

@PSH can i just spray carb cleaner in any of the hoses going into the unit ?

thanks
h

Check the TPS too..(throttle position switch)...again you should hear a click when just opening the throttle...operate the throttle cam by hand and listen..should hear a click as the throttle is cracked open and closed again.

I can't recall which hose goes where?... just chase it back from the idle control valve, you can see the valve in that picture...

Sorry meant to say, the valve can be seen under the inlet manifold behind the hose arrowed on the right.
