what did you do to your 944 today

Other than washing it, the last time my turbo got wet was nearly 5 years ago. Didn't have much choice then, as I was moving house. It's not a garage queen, just like my bike, I just don't enjoy using it in the wet.
Me neither ,I just really needed something that would take her huge bag!!🤣
I had a plonker in a 320d with M badges and Temu/A- babba cosmetics trying to have a ā€œraceā€ managed to make steady progress and leave him behind .Enjoyed using the car as a car for first time in a while ,in the most affectionate way it does feel from a different time ,but you retune back into it.Daughter enjoyed it ,in a school car park full of Electric cars and Range rovers it got some looks of curiosity!!!🤣

Quite a productive day today. Found a gap in the rain and went out to replace the central locking actuator rod on the passenger side, a bargain at £2.60 from OPC. Topped up the coolant as it was a bit below the min mark. Noticed the NS rear speaker wasn't working, took the panel off and a wire had come loose, probably been like that since the inner arch was fixed as it needed a weld in there a couple of years ago, fixed now. Also fixed the boot release that was sticking open, water ingress into the latches I think (WD40 done the trick) and I also traced my boot water leak to both the latch seals. Ordered a pair of latch seals, £128 for the pair, not a bargain, a ridiculous price for 2 foamy things, they were £15 a side last time I ordered them, some clowns have them on eBay for £137 quid a side ffs! Anyway, I'm over the shock and they arrive Saturday so will get them fitted and refit the boot carpet then.

That in a nutshell sums up 944 parts prices 2 quid for a lock rod and 64 quid for 3 inches of foam..........................................

Pretty sure I saw someone on FB group had a recall for this as well, let's see if they start sending them out to all of us? Is this an S2 or Turbo? I recall there was a slight change in the engine bay fuel lines between 1988 and 1989/90.

@MarkK it's an old recall for 1987 model year cars, the fuel jumper hose between the rail and damper.

If anyone is interested you can check your VIN for recalls here -

Dumbo question from me ....
when do you generally start using your 944s again?Mine is all ready to go but salt worries me...,.
I'm paranoid just want to look after my car but at the same time clock is ticking and i don't want to leave a minter for the next man.
as above pls be gentle....!

I hope to take mine out mid April for the first classic car show this season at a pub near me. I'll need to see if I can still drive first.....after a very long stay in hospital following my heart op I lost the use of my left leg due to a tendon collapse. I have sat in the car and can push the clutch pedal down, problem is I can't lift my leg to place it on the pedal. Whether I feel safe enough to ever drive the car again is an unknown.

That's horrendous Pete, sorry to hear that.

Mine is my only car currently and my daily driver. It's been up in Scotland with me since 2009, racked up 87k miles and been out in all weathers and isn't garaged. It's held up well and is solid underneath. It spent the first 20 years of its life in the south of England, Dorset being where I picked it up from. 17 years of rain, sleet, snow and salt hasn't been a big issue for the car. Nothing for you all to be scared of lol!

Not a stupid question. Had a lot of welding done on mine last year (the pictures of it are not for the feint hearted) and undersealed so wanted to use it after recovering from a back op. I cringed at the amount of salt that other week when I took it out but just had the urge to use her and at least last week there was plenty of rain to wash it off on a drive. It felt good too get her out.

Now really should get round to fixing the loose wire that is an ad hoc immobiliser

Car looks lovely, hope you get enough movement back. Otherwise you'll have to get a nice 928 to park next to her.

I do like his videos, not technical enough for me though most of the time, I prefer watching someone talk through the innards of an engine rebuild or conversion.
It's about as far from Porsche as you can get but I recommend LR Time, deep technical rebuilds with good genuine humour of a German husband and wife team. All their videos are in flawless English. Unsurprisingly plenty of work in their fleet to keep the videos coming.

I decided to fit the solid spring plate mounts to the back end while the car was SORNed over the winter.IMG_6783.jpeg

Then I got a bit carried away and reminded myself that the rear wheel arches are supposed to be body coloured.

And while I was at it I spent nearly £600 on having the rear shocks rebuilt and new springs fitted.

Not engine related but a winter job that needed doing, a howling windscreen wiper motor. It was still working (just about) but would make an awful howling noise intermittently.

Following zee German fellow's instructions from Youtube (Irina) I removed the top part of the HVAC blower assembly, only managing to round-off two screws in the process and snapping a third. They should be easy to extract with the top part off as a good 4mm of screw is exposed, so going to use the hot air blower and some penetrating fluid to remove them (they are screwed into the lower plastic part luckily and not metal).

I covered the engine with an old blanket as I didn't want to get any dirt on it now it is looking brand new!

Once all the screws were removed the top part needed a good bit of pressure to release it, I was then able to vacuum all the dirt from behind the cover and remove the motor assembly.

Next it was time to remove the wiper linkage, however this was difficult as the two M18 nuts were welded to the aluminium threads. I believe this is a common problem made all the worse by the linkage being NLA from Porsche for some time. I've ordered a M18 thread die in the hope I can restore the threads enough that I can hand tighten the two nuts on.

I've now removed the wiper motor from the linkage in preparation to strip it down and try and restore it. I've also ordered a replacement motor in case it is unsalvageable, which is for VW cars and so doesn't have the "beserk" mode speed but should work fine according to another thread on tipec (below).

And a link to the part I ordered - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/336339742479

You can see the damaged threads in the picture below. I also found the original wiper motor cover which was in a box of 944 parts in the attic, so will fit that when it eventually all goes back in the car.

More updates when I dismantle the motor!

Some more progress on the wiper motor.

Gave it a clean with lots and lots of brake cleaner, there was a very sticky oil like material all over the top part of the motor where the electric cables are exposed.

Then finally opened it up and was met with a scene of red... rust that is and lots of it. Looks like the motor armature was rusty and rubbing against the magnets causing everything to get covered in rust dust.

Vacuumed the casing and the motor, and cleaned the armature up with a sanding stone attached to a dremel multi-tool. I then used some electrical contact cleaner and many cotton buds to clean up the windings and electrical components.

I used a drill mounted wire brush to clean the inside of the casing and then washed it out with degreaser before applying a layer of rust convertor (Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80).

Next step is to reassemble and test before fitting it back to the wiper frame.

I think if I still had mine I'd be just as paranoid Mark. Every now and then I look at the recent MOT history on the DVLA website and it's MOT expired 5 years ago and lots of the previous yearly comments are for corrosion
