S or 2.7? Opinions please

My first 944 was an S bought through ignorance rather than choice. However it was great, went well enough, yes you had to rev it but its a bit like a mini turbo as under 3.5 rpm it was docile but above it picked up a bit.
I don't think it cost any less to run than the turbo does and check the chain and slippers.
I'd have another if I was in the market. All you can do is drive both and choose.

I would say that the drawback of the S engine feeling slightly less tractable at low revs than the 8V is reasonably outweighed by the better engine note coupled with a shorter gearbox that I think makes the S more enjoyable to push hard.

As Spinal Tap explained, an amplifier that goes to 11 is better than one that goes to 10. So a car with an "S" is better than one without.

And an SS (or S2 as Porsche call them) is be even better again.

And as well know from our school days, after S comes T. Which stands for Turbo. Confirming once again that Turbo's sit at the top of the 944 tree.

By this (arguably flawed!) logic, go the the S over the 2.7.

Think I shall have to just wait and see whats available and whats best value for money once I have the funds finally collected then :) as the S seems to be getting a few more fans now lol
Cheers Ewan I like that sort of logic lol though given the choice I'd prefer a S2 to a turbo :p
Thanks all
Will

I'd buy on condition, buy the best you can, be it an S or 2.7. Don't drive both in advance of buying, then you don't know what you are missing....

lol as much as I do like turbos I prefer naturally aspirated and superchargers, though then again this may change. Though I still stand by my S2 comment :p

I think thats what I am going to do now alpine as the 2.5 always made me smile when my dad had his 924s so I wouldnt be disapointed if I ended up with one and at 22 I still cant complain really, just want to settle my porsche itch now lol

Glenn whats the picture bud? It wont show on my screen for some reason :/

Suggest you buy jan 2013 edition of Porsche and 911 world where Adam Towler has carried out a complete comparison between 2.5 2.7 and 2.5s
My choice sq dash 2.5 with Fuchs manual
Great looks with Fuchs
And I like the sq dash interior

Awsome I shall head to smiths and pick up a copy then! I havnt bought a porsche magazine in ages, are they one like most monthly magazines where the january issue is out in December and the february in January and so on?
I'm the opposite and prefer oval dash and tele dials (or idially cups) to fuchs.
Thanks for the heads up.

Why dont you come to Bedford Will? Kick some 944 tyres and watch some old men drive their old cars around the circuit and maybe get a ride or two on track?

Edd

Sweet trip to smiths today and see if they have it in then :)
Edd is that in March as your sig suggests?
Starting to really look at 2.5's now (not that I was over looking them entirerly) but they are ~£400 cheaper to insure than a 2.7 or S :/
Cheers

Will, be good for you to get a good feel for the cars if you can make it to Bedford on 25-3-13 it is going to be a great day, we just need a 2.7 to sign up!

If you local WHS have not got the current issue of 911 & Porsche World you can download it via Apple newsstand, iTunes, Google Play or www.pocketmags.com to iPad, iPhone, Android device, Mac or Kindle Fire

Cheers & Merry Xmas

Found it online on pocketmag though isnt available on google play unfortunately.
You to mate hope you have a good un.
Cheers

Firstly I don't wish to 'hijack' this post but I've a question on a similar theme. I've decided, in the New Year, to buy a 944 but I'm agonising over which one! I thought I'd decided on a 944s or s2, hence my username, but after reading the comments on this thread & the excellent article in the Jan edition of 911 & Porche World I just can't decide.

If I didn't buy the s2 i'd feel as though I'd be missing out, performance wise, but in 'real world' driving I think it may disappoint. If I can make a comparison, & I'm not suggesting for one minuite that a MK2 Golf GTI is a Porsche 944, but dare I sudggest a comparison in driving characteristics between 8 valve & 16 valve engines? I've owned both Golfs, & still have a lovely 8v, but the 16v was a huge disappointment. Ok, if it was thrashed it was quick but that's not practical for every day driving & didn't suit my driving style.
Would I find the same with the 944 8v & 16v engines? I don't want to waste my time or a potential sellers time.

I intend to use the car over the Summer months only. Weekends & holidays so not an every day car. See my dilemma?!

I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

Don't worry about it we rarely stay on topic in any thread! Lol

I own a MK1 Golf GTI and found my early square dash 944 (1983 2.5 8v) was a very similar driving experience to the Golf. A MK2 is about the only Golf I've never driven but guessing will be similar. I have a 944 turbo now though, fancied some boost in my life :) S2 I've had briefly aswell. Was a very nice car but so smooth it almost didn't feel fast. Was a very quick car though and handling as with all good 944's was epic!

Best just try both and see how you feel. Where in the UK are you?
