Porsche dash cam useful info

On my new 992.2GTS I purchased the front and rear car dash cam option and decided fit it myself rather than pay over £500 to have it fitted. The new cars now come with the prewired option, although you still have to purchase the harnesses for both cameras and remove some facias to locate the connectors. It is a bit fiddly to fit but there are good informations available on the web. After fitting you still have to go into dealer mode to set up the camera for the type of battery for the car and the duration the radar is on, maximum 1 hour. I struggled a bit to find how to go into dealer mode for the camera.

To activate dealer mode:
Remove SD card
Plug camera backing the mount after removing it it.
Hold the power button down until you hear two audible beeps.
Both lights will come on the read and the yellow
Connect to your Dashcam using a lap top or iPad using the WIFI on 324B6D or similar
Type in 192.168.1.1/diagnostics on your browser, and bingo you, just follow then the instructions on the screen.

During normal operation and trying to access the camera files from the Dashcam software on your phone, disable bluetooth on your phone ,otherwise the software keeps trying to connect to the car internal Porsche network due to apple car play.

Thanks for giving us this information Huw, could be very useful for us all to save the dealership fitting costs, and also assist transferring the dash cam from a current to a future car and saving 2 x dealership costs. (removing and fitting). 👍😀

My pleasure, I have a full set of photos I took of the installation. This only applies to the pre wired installation.

Has anyone had experience with the FIXCAMX Dash Cameras?

They seem to fit unobtrusively into the rear mirror and overhead console areas.

It looks as if the wiring is an inline piggy back into the connector which is already in place.

The question still is how would the OPC’s view the modification.

There is a YouTube video here

And it only £161..

I have a Viofo A129 Pro in my 718 and plug it into the 12v socket under the dash. Very discreet and you can't see it as it's hidden behind the rear view mirror.

Re wiring in, as long as you're not splicing wires then i would assume the waranty would be fine.

Hi David

Looking at the video for the FIXCAM X , although it is smaller than the Porsche dash cam. When the Porsche dash cam is mounted high up on the windscreen, and not the much lower position they quote in the installation manual the rear drive mirror hides the majority of the unit. The FixCAM camera splices into an available power source in the above panel such as the rain sensor camera. It does not use the Porsche pre wired harness. If there was a need to install a rear view camera, an additional cable will have to be run in. The Porsche pre wired harness is already installed in the C pillar. Also I am not sure where you stand with the warranty, replacing the front housing with the camera.

Hi Huw,

Thanks for the comments, I know you have recently installed the Porsche unit in your new GTS, was it very difficult to ‘plug in’ the wiring of the unit to the ‘pre wired’ part of the car?

I just think the OPC charging £500 ish for the task seems quite high, especially when Porsche state ‘including pre wiring for the dash cam’.

Any suggestions welcome.

Kind Regards David

It was a bit fiddly David, if you do go along to fit it your self just contact me for any guidance. You will have to purchase a harness for the front and rear which will be specific to your car. The Porsche centre keep a variety of them for different Porsche models. They cost about £40, put pressure on them you might get them free like I did.

Hi Huw,

We met some years back at a 991 register weekend away in North Yorkshire. I too have just got a 992.2 GTS. I ticked the dash cams box in the options (as well as the bucket for the boot). Apparently both these options are NOT provided at the factory. The bucket is no great deal bit I did expect the dash cams to be fitted at the factory.

The salesman hadn’t had anyone who had ordered the dash cams as part of the order and didn’t even know if the car would come with these fitted at the factory. As it was, they weren’t. The salesman then thought that they should have come with the car, ready to be fitted at the centre. As it was the centre had to order up new pack (front and back) but they did fit them as part of the service.

setting them up was a pain and still is. I have to disconnect my CarPlay to allow the camera to connect to my phone. What a faff. I was even told just to remove the mini SDchip if I ever Needed to retrieve footage. Just did this last weekend as there was a near miss (not my fault). I connected I to my phone and was able to see the files but couldn’t see the rear camera. Going to have to make a booking.

Not ideal.

Does the Porsche dashcam have a parking mode, to record if your car gets hit when nobody is in it?

I think the Porsche configurator is very misleading with regards to the Dash Cam addition. It doesn’t clearly state that all you get are the kit of parts and the dealer still charges an additional £500 or so to install it. You were right to expect it came installed although I am surprised that the dealer didn’t advise you of the ‘actual’ process at the point of order.

You are lucky they gave you the camera and fitted it. In addition they would have had to get the harness to connect to the wiring loom, this connects it to the camera. `I agree it is a pain to download to the phone app because of car play. I always switch off the blue tooth on my phone before connecting then it connects. You need to play it on the dash cam software to see the rear camera.

Yes it does, also it pre records for up to an hour (depends on the battery management) when the car is parked. This only triggers if there is a bump.

@cymro, I've just picked-up a 992.2 Carrera 4 GTS cabriolet and would like to fit a dash cam myself, the car has the dash cam prep. If you can share any photos or weblinks to complement your excellent guidance above about getting into "dealer" mode, I'd greatly appreciate it. Please feel free to DM me if that's easier. Many thanks!

I have just seen your message, yours will be a lot easier due to being a cab. You only have to concentrate on the front dash cam. I am away at the moment but will help you when home. Firstly you need to contact your Porsche centre and purchase the harness for your Model VIN to connect the pre wired plugs to the harness. the harness should not be more than £30, I got mine free. The harness is a short cable and adaptor that connects to the camera.

Many thanks for coming back to me, I've got the cable from my OPC and interestingly it also includes a rear cable co-ax socket, which I won't need. I'm more interested in how to remove the roof console, since the install manual says to refer to the Workshop Manual for this, although I don't have one. You referred to good information on the web, although I've not been able to find any.

Hi Huw, thank you for the information which is very helpful. I have the dashcam prep on my 992 and I have been thinking about having one fitted to the front. I was interested in your view on how obtrusive they are please when you are driving please, given you have lived with yours for a bit? Many thanks, Tim

The cover in front of the rear view window can be removed by sliding down and you should see some plastic clips there just gently push them in.

the cover in the image 30-11-2024 can be gently pulled down as well, by using a plastic trim tool to push in the clips. Took me longer because I did not realise there is a small crew holding the cover inside the little grill on the right hand side. Just flip the screen mesh down and you will find the hidden screw.

When you mount the camera make sure it is mounted as high as you can, the instructions to see shows far to low (X) on the instructions 250mm.

I have included a copy of the instructions below.

I have also changed under dealer mode the setting for the radar time off to be off instead of the default 1 Hour. This then pre records any movement prior to a bump when in parking mode. I found that 1 hour was not sufficient time. just keep an eye on the battery which should be fine on LifePro battery (13V)

The camera is not intrusive as long as it is mounted high enough on the windscreen

Remember to turn off the blue tooth on your phone, otherwise the dashvam app will connect to the Porsche %G WIFI instead which is a pain

Excellent! Thank you for the extra details, I was able to fit mine earlier today and am very happy with the result. The most frustrating thing is that the cable the dealer sold me is about 1 metre long, when I really only need a run of about 15cm. It was ordered according to my VIN and yet still had a plug for a rear camera, that I can’t really fit in a cab! There’s not much space so I ended-up running the cable along the passenger side windscreen trim and back again to take-up the slack. I did think about cutting the cable to shorten it but the amount of fibre wrap would have made it a very unpleasant job!

All-in, I’m pleased with the result and got a 20% discount thanks to PCGB from Mid Sussex OPC.

I am glad you got it sorted and working.

Info when using
make sure you hear the camera announce that it is recording when the ignition of the car comes on, I have been caught acouple of times when the camera locked up and therefore did not record.

also as I mentioned, it is worth to select the timer on the radar from 1 hour to off, this enable the camera when in parking mode as long as the battery is Ok to start recording for a few seconds before a bump. If there is a bump it will then will write to the SD card.
