Plastic Window Replacement - Experiences here please?

I had my 2000 Rainforest Green Boxster S hood replaced with a BAS International glass screen hood in green -unfortunately the fitter missed out some vital tensioning bits and it looked like a wet paper bag draped over a clothes horse. BAS invited me down to their HQ and replaced it free of charge - now it looks fantastic. I can't praise them highly enough. Best modification I made, with the possible exception of the brand new Tequipment sports exhaust I picked up on eBay for £400 ...

I split my rear window in Jan 2005 and decided to replace just the window panel (see earlier post). Last month the stitching around the panel failed. With all the rain just lately I needed a quick fix.

I knew about BAS International in Wales through previous posts. So I decided to go for a replacement hood with a glass window. They fitted me in that week. It was a bit of a journey to Wales from Liverpool but managed to get there for 8.30am. They gave me a lift in to town where I based myself in a coffee shop expecting a long day. Pleasantly surprised to get a call at 11am. The car was ready. They came to collect me and I was back on the road by 11.30am.

The original top was blue but decided to go for a black replacement. Good decision. The car looks as new. The window now demists. They connect to the wing mirror demist switch for you. Although the window is slightly smaller than the plastic panel it it not really noticeable. However the extra clarity makes up for any reduction in size.

The best part came during the journy home. Got caught up in traffic at the M5/M6 junction. The sun was out so decided to put the hood down. No need to get out to do 'the chop'. Just brilliant!!!

BAS were great. I would recommend to anyone.

Would be nice to know just how much acess there is, as from memory the air filter and and the power steering reserviour is accesed from the top ? So if you need a major service that requires those items changed you NEED to "tinker" in there ! Anyone know what the average charge for fitting the glass screen top is?

Hi

The price for the glass hood fitted varies by company but the range is circa £800 to £1000 for the people that I spoke to. At the moment my money would go to Essential Styling as he answered my question abut restricted access honestly although he wasn't certain what the exact difference was. In addition his company seems to come up as a good outfir through this thead quite a few times. He fits the hood made by BAS

Regards

Graham

I had the BAS glass window top fitted on my 2001 MY 986 Boxster S for £795 by Simon (formerly at ESS Tring) now trading as "SDR" in Kempton, Herts (near St Albans) tel 0777 571 2526. There were a couple of post-fitting problems, but Simon came out to me (in Oxford) to sort out. I would recommend him highly. The BAS top is great, a heated rear window for these damp autumn evenings and the top down with no more getting out to do the Boxster chop. And today I fitted a Wilhemy module that overrides the "handbrake on" top opening/closing restriction so I can raise & lower the top while on the move at 25mph or less with just one quick push of the button. Perfect!

Hi

First ever Porsche. Needed new rear screen. Got it done at Trimania in Finchampstead. I actually got it done on my insurance after a few arguments. Excellent job done

I bought a facelift 986 hood with folding mechanism on fleabay and fitted it myself, it's a straight swap if you get the whole thing and not just the material. Cost me £695 including shipping. Only change you will need to make is reference the micro switch that tells the car if the roof is up or down. On the facelift car it's in a different place, so you can either make a work around (which I did) or buy and fit the later micro switch (which I believe is in the nearside roof motor.)

Hi Mark, I am getting mine done this Friday at Pickerings of Bradford, West Yorkshire, tel: 01274 724000 - they do about 10- 20 a month.
The cost is £258 inc VAT and they sew the new one in using the old holes. The screen is a tinted green.
They come very highly reccommended.

Cheers
Ray

Hi,

www.surreycarhoods.co.uk for £280 + vat and would recommend them.

having problem finding someone who replaces the window in scotland and i live in Aberdeenshire, can anyone please help me..

My Plasic window has split and I am having difficulty finding anyone in the highlands of Scotland to fit a replacement, does anyone know if there is someone around Inverness area that can do it ?

I am considering upgrading to the BAS glass window hood, has anyone had a car with the conversion for a couple of years and if they have how is the hood standing up to the weather ?

Ian

I've got the BAS - it still looks great about 18 months in.
Having said that the car has not had a heavy use the last couple of years...[&o]

I see the BAS hood comes in at £511.75 would I need to go to a specialist for fitting one of these? I checked one place and they are charging £400 for fitting

In September I replaced the old hood on my 986 with a BAS glass window hood. I called BAS london (0208 916 2116 ) in Croydon and arranged to have it fitted by a specialist who they work with. Total cost was around £730. The only thing the guy would not do was connect up the woring for the new heated window but this only took me a few minutes to do myself.

I am very happy with the hood and the fitting and would recommend this service to anyone looking at switching to the glass window.

Hi, Does anyone know of a fitter around the York area. I have found a place in Cheshire who will replace the plastic window like for like and has quoted £150 all in. Don't know whether to go for glass upgrade on my 1997 Boxster but as yet, cannot find anyone north of Watford. Still shopping though. Thanx John

Hi all. Managed to purchase a glass replacement hood on ebay for £325 new (this was on £395 Buy It Now or Best Offer) I am having it fitted by my local garage in York who does my servicing, for £100. This is a big saving on a quote from a Porsche specialist of £975!!! Will post here when complete and will let you know how good a job. I am also having the seats retrimmed in black leather with red stitching on Friday at Seat Surgeons in York. Again will keep you posted of how well the car looks on completion.
Can't wait to see finished items.

OK the time has come to bit the bullet, my plastic screen has split and I have always wanted the glass screen. Been calling round to get quotes today here where I am so far:-

Trimmania (Reading) - £850+VAT (BAS hood)
BAS (Wales) - £845 all in
Hoods Galore (Essex) - £790 all in (BAS hood)
Surrey Interiros - £700+VAT (BAS hood) on special offer.
Car Hood (Chessington) - £745 all in and done at your home (Hood is from USA they say top quality 1 year warranty and lifetime on glass coming away from the hood, which if it happens you go back to them to resolve) they sent me a picture too http://i560.photobucket.com/albums/ss46/jeegnesh1/photo-11.jpg
Hot Hoods - £815 all in (can do mobile fitting £30) BAS hood
Car Hoods Direct - £875 all in (5 year warranty, hood from USA)

I am very much thinking about going with Car Hood http://www.carhood.com/porsche.htm I like the gurantee and price (as you can that is) and they say the quality is TOP and can supply BAS one if I wanted but that does not come with the glass coming away from hood gurantee.

Any thoughts?

It's booked. Going with Car Hood got them to £725 and they will come and fit it at my place. Will feedback on hood and the service, so far very impressed.
