Owners Roll Call !

I've just joined and thought I'd upload a couple of pictures of my 924s:

I was lucky enough to be given it in exchange for a charitable donation and following a little work for the MOT it scrubbed up well:

I've since put nearly 2k trouble free miles on it, although I'll likely have to stick around as some things have been going wrong as of late:

Flapping sunroof - found flexi-cable (metal) which should be going to the sunroof flapping in the boot pocket
Ripped/torn interior
Leaking sunroof - seal perished (partly to do with other sunroof issue)
Engine a good 50+ BHP down and burning a good bit of oil
Diff whining like a goodun....

Although the bodywork is very tidy

You may see me around here a fair amount....either looking how to fix it or deciding to convert it to a stripped track car with uprated engine/drivetrain transplant...

Hello Kieran

Welcome to the Club [:)]
Had a look at the thread on Pistonheads and we need your tales of 924 related wisdom and discovery on this forum as well.

Car looks good and a keeper and worth a bit of work.

I hope that I have helped many a 924 2.0 litre owner, and this has been possible because of my long association with the 2.0 litre car. My real name is John Barnatt, moderator, technical adviser and Regional organiser for Thames valley. A throw away comment by a female friend that "on the money I was earning I should have a Porsche by now", put the idea in my head but I didn't rush out and by a 924 on the strength of that as I had just bought a very good Audi 80 GLE, six years old, and it was the one with the VAG 1600 engine like the golf GTI Mk1 that I crashed and wrote off bruising myself quite badly in the process, but luckily not breaking any bones. I continued to enjoy the Audi but the lure of the Mark sucked me in and clutching £8,000 I went in search of a 911. At that time a rock bottom priced 911 could be had for £8500 and I hoped to be lucky as I had cash. After a few failed phone calls it became apparent that the belt and braces boys were snapping up all the 911s and it was made clear in no uncertain terms that i would be very lucky to get and discount for cash on any 911. Crestfallen I noticed a place not far from AFN in Guildford on my way back from another fruitless search, and saw on the forecourt a 69,000 mile, bronze metalic 924 that was in my price range. Mindful of all the (now spurious I find) uninformed bad press about the 924 I had a test drive, and coming as I was from non-Porshce owner ship I was impressed. It was a step up in performance from the Audi, although others would have you believe otherwise and was the equal of many a spiritedly driven XR3i despite what the published figures said. That was in 1987 and I drove the car till it had 110,000 miles then fitted a rebuilt engine from an Audi 100, the model that came with a 2.2 ltr five cylinder engine as an option but obviously I had bought the 2.0 with carbs. I built the engine in 1992, including machining the threaded recess for the bakelite fuel injector holders in the cylinder head. Of note here is that the Haynes manual for the Audi shows a version of the carburettor head which clearly used the injection head, but with the ports blanked, but my engine was in a 1978 car and was cast solid. It seems to me that this might have been done at sometime to reduce costs. The 24 x 1mm pitch taps for the inserts cost £48 each and there were two, and I belive I still have them somewhere. During this rebuild I fitted the head with new guides, valves springs collets and retainers and even the tappets. The surprise was that according to the machine shop that bored the block out for new pistons the crank was in spec for ovality and needed nothing more that a simple polish as the diameter and face was good, but this was on a crank with 96,000 miles. Another rebuild occured in 1996 to incorporate balanced con rods and she used to rev to 6,200 swiftly but with a touch more vibration due to the reduction of the harmonic mass on the bottom of the big end cap. It would pull 6,000 in fifth, and that on Le Mans Wheels. In a back to back comparison with a completely standard 2.0 ltr 924 I could hold on to second for longer and continue to pull away from it so there was some albeit minor improvement. Anyway; much longer story short, eventully the dreaded metal moth took hold, and it was finally sent for scrap in 2003, after the monocoque had covered 247,000 miles. About the only original items were the front wishbones and stub axles, but not the ball joints. the torque tube rear drive shafts and rear wheel bearings, but not the CV joints. I am currently building up the parts necessary to increase the output of my 1924 Turbo from 177 to 220 hp. Not as daft as it may seem. I know that intercooling will take it straight to 196 then a 0.003" skim of the block, and +0.5 mm pistons should give 5 hp, and if my £350 billet cam from Integral Cams in the US, designed specifically for the Turbo, doesn't give me 19 hp then I have wasted my money. Unfortunately this project has somewhat stalled at the moment simply because I broke my elbow on the 30th April last year and am now only just gaining the mobility and strength to use it on anything strenuous. A brand new block has been bored to +0.5 and pistons are on the conrods, I have a new water pump and radiator, new clutch front discs and caliper repair kits. Due to a cambelt breakage after a lay up coming back from the mot the head has only been recondiditoned with new valves about 9,000 miles ago, so we are ready to rumble as soon as the weather picks up.

Hi Folkes,
I recognise some of you! Im down in Essex running a tidy 924S and about to start on restoring a complete and solid 924 T

Hello folks... I am a PCGB member with a Cayman.
I am now also a PCGB member with a rather lovely 924... [:D]

I picked up a non runner in Aberdeen. He had it for 21 years. It was used in London for a while by a member of his family.
The first owner was in Scotland.
It has a PCGB sticker on the window. Is there anyway to find out any history of the car with the club?
It's a non runner due to the fuel pump packing in.... Parts are on order.
After the battery was charged I checked all the electrical systems and everything works as it should.
It has done 98 miles since its last mot which was nearly 2 years ago. It's been in a garage gathering dust ever since.
Really looking forward to getting out in it !
Cheers
Archie.

Hi

I've always had the urge to take things apart since I was really young and got myself into trouble numerous times when 'fiddling' with my cars in the past. I decided last year that I should really look at getting a second car in the form of a toy to play with and after looking around at the options decided a 924 would tick all the boxes so in September picked up a white 1982 2.0 model.

I've since spent most evenings fixing bits and now have it running really nicely and have put roughly 900 miles on it (only gets used on dry weekendsevenings). MOT next week which will hopefully be ok but just enjoying it as much as possible.

Hi, just thought I'd add my bit. 924s bourght in Oct 2003 from fleeeebay, sight unseen, DO NOT DO THIS. It was a shed which I fixed and drove for 4 years before going over to the dark side, 911sc. However I have since seen the light and the car is now ready for a respray. The full story may or may not be published in Porsche Post, I have sent the words and pictures in.

Hi all very new to Porsche 924 ownership but loving every minute so far.
I have just brought a bronze 1984 924 that is very good condition. A few niggles her and there but nothing too scarey.
Hope to see some of you out and about in the cotswold area (Oxford) this summer.

Tim

Hi Tim,

Great to see another 924 owner in Oxford! I live in Witney so hopefully see you about.
