New 944 S2 owner!

Hi MarkK, forgive me but what sort of tyres are the cups? Are they slick? I was thinking of putting R888's on my 17 inch wheels as a road/track compromise but I'd be interested to try slick tyres as I still have my old 16 inch D90's with road tyres for getting to and from track if I go to slicks on the 17 inchers.

Michelin cups are "upmarket" 888's... I'm using Yokohama ad08's at the moment - bit of a bargain I think. Decent road tyre but almost on a par with 888's etc... and I don't have to bring another set. slicks are another level up in grip, but will stress the brakes and the rest of the car much more. I have used them on track cars when I could got them cheap s/h and there is some entertainment in the cornering and braking abilities. Andrew sweetenham was very very quick in his turbo on slicks (mind you I think he'd be quick on road tyres) some tdo's don't let you run slicks without a cage.

Great looking car! I love these 993 winter wheels in black, look great on a 944 imo (have them on mine). I also had just one rear catch working recently, was a retaining clip missing from one of the bars, had a bit of an issue identifying the right part with porsche but fixed it in the end with a 993 one. I'm also looking at doing more track days, was considering Spa to, I know Ed has been there and seems to rate it, still some spaces for 27th September/20th October via the official Spa website. Edd

Nice looking car Will. I drooled over the advert for that for some time when Mas first spotted the ad. Darren and Oli have a good reputation at RPM and they know how to do a good conversion so I imagine you have yourself a little cracker there [8D] If you look down into the sticky boot catch you'll probably find it's just gummed up. They are easy to take out, clean up with some solvent and then regrease before reinstalling. It could even be that one of the two bolts holding it to the bodywork is a bit tight. Try loosening them and the catch itself might loosen up without cleaning.

Edd, the Spa days you mentioned look good and @ 235 euros cheap but I think its only 4 x 25 min sessions? Mas, 6k was the price the previous owner offered to me as he left to live in China and needed to release some cash, how could I refuse[

I haven't been there yet...but everyone who goes loves it I'm not doing the DN6 event at the 'ring, just turning up for a few TF laps on the Tuesday night, stopping over at the Tiergarten and driving up to Spa on Wednesday morning. I think the 944 will be great at the 'ring - can't wait! Will - are you midlands based? I'm near Leeds, I think the 944 will be great at the ring and should be respectable on the straights. I'm going down on the Saturday and back Monday/Tuesday. My last track outing was in my 470bhp S4 which monstered the straights but try getting a 1650kg Avant to do corners....[

] I went to Spa this year and its a great track and overall experience - it will make most UK tracks seem small fry by comparison. I saw a beautiful Guards Red 944 Turbo on Cup 1's in the carpark when we stopped at the Ring.

I can recommend an indie near Barnsley, if youre interested Will? Factory trained, ex-JCT600 technicians and Yorkshireman-friendly prices... Ive driven a Frontrunner around the Nordschleife, but not for a long time and its a very different place now. Then I only saw a few locals, most of whom passed me in trick Golfs, during all of my laps. Itll amuse Ed to read that each lap cost DM12, which was under a fiver, and I begrudge paying SO much more now! My last visit was in 2008 in a Skoda Felicia, where I managed a scorching 12:35 (complete with heavy breakdown tool kit, camping equipment and everything else that you need on a charity rally) complete with a mental pasenger. ] As far as I know it's a turbo box too, not fitted long ago by RPM. I've just ordered an alcantara knob and gaitor from eBay.de so should finish it off nicely!

One of the reasons I want to move to better tyres is that they were the limiting factor in my steady progression to track day car perfection. Currently at half cage/raceseats/harnesses/stripped interior/Gaz Gold coilovers/Mintex pads level and at Spa, we could feel the tyres letting go. Brakes held up perfectly and suspension was good (although I managed a 360 going up Eau Rouge/Raidillon caused by a lift after the compression due to someone parked at the top of the hill!!!)

Many thanks for the details, only about 20 miles away too. Had a fantastic day at Blyton park yesterday in the car, everything was spot on and she looks great on track! Perhaps a little underpowered compared to my last cars but so much fun with some nice oversteer [

Practically there arent any options. In order to go beyond expensive blueprinting, you need to remove all of the inlet tract and current Bosche DME, replace this with a MAP based system and replace the camshafts. As Im sure that you know, normally aspirated engines need to rev more to make more power and this rule applies ultimately to the S2 too, even though it was strangled by Porsche, so youll need to provide for increased revs through lightening and balancing, and ultimately through the use of better components. Sounds expensive, doesnt it? The alternative would be to lighten the car, which effectively increases its output and also pays dividends when brake and cornering too. Probably not what you wanted tohear though, sorry.
Thanks, some useful information there. I think it's what I expected, and I'm sure I didn't get the best out of it as I'm still getting a feel for it. The car is also still on toyo t1r's which were good but went off after a few laps, resulting in a little spin [
] Some more time in the car and better tyres should help, by the end of the day I was passing more cars in the tight sections. Finished the day with a pax in a caterham R400 which was insane, but we also had a spin in that!!
