New 944 S2 owner!

Only takes half an hour to swap pads, and you've got weeks.....And new ones will work so much better anyway I'm going to get some PF97's - which look a bargain at just under £100. I think the 1155's I'm using were not quite up to it. Donington is hard on brakes - first for the esses & then redgate. I wouldn't want to be trying too hard on standard (worn) pads with 220 brakes
 
I need new discs too, and I was originally going to upgrade to larger calipers (as this was the most economical time to do it). Now Im unsure as to which direction to take, because on closer inspection I realised that the car has new later-style calipers on the front and the upgrade was partly justified by the perceived need to refurb the calipers.
 
Simon, I wouldn't even start a trackday in a heavy old Turbo if you already know your brakes are a bit close to the limit. I learnt the hard way with a total brake failure that cost me over £7000 For the sake of circa £200 I'd fit new pads and disks now
 
Sorry if I wasnt clear Paul. I was tempted by a day at Donnington, but that would have forced my decision over the brakes and Im not sure what Im doing yet, also: Id prefer someone else to do it for me. My car is going back to the garage in a few weeks to have the balance belt checked, have the rear poly bushes fitted and have the brakes done. If Id booked it then Id have had to have had the brakes done and the geo done all within a fortnight, which I couldnt manage.
 
The gaitor should wear pretty well as long as its kept clean. £80 is pretty good value considering im a Yorkshireman [;)] Yep booked with focused, and they were not sure how long the 48hr deal was on for, but longer than 48hrs!! I booked a garage too which came to £164 which considering the one I was doing at £269 on the 31st (fully booked now) seems good value.
 
Awesome day at Donington park on Monday, the car performed fantastically. My friend had a session with an instructor and he was surprised at the level of grip this 944 has. Looking forward to the next one....

Great stuff Will - I think the 944 is well suited to Donington. ...but were you flat all the way from Redgate through Craner? [;)] TBH I tried that once on my last outing there & the back end just stepped out a bit mid-corner, which was a touch unnerving. A little lift just before felt a bit more secure. I'm sure I was quicker through Craner in the S2 than I had been in my turbo - my only problem was getting the car slowed and in the right place for old hairpin [:)] I am going to explore damper settings to see if I can reduce the tendency for mid-corner oversteer in very fast bends. (may be roll oversteer I suppose as it's only running standard arb's)

Course he was.......... he has an S2 [:D] Donington has always been my favourite circuit. Plenty of gradient and just the right amount of fast corners that suit the 944s handling

So Paul are you suggesting that he must have been flat because an S2 can't go fast enough for it to be an issue? Shame on you - next thing you'll be saying is that at least there is still a step up when he's improved [;)]
 
Learnt a lot about the 944 at Donington (my first time there) my lines were poor in the am session but after some instruction we nailed it through craner, trying a combination of short shifting to 4th at the top and going flat out in third. Excellent track but will do it next time without the Melbourne loop. My mate hate one excursion on to the grass but his last sessions in the car were really quick!
 
craner is definitely a 4th gear corner for my S2....although of course it depends on getting a good exit from redgate.. I only use 3 and 4 on a lap here, apart from a quick burst in 5th on the back straight. I feel like I ought to be able to go through old hairpin & coppice in 4th as well, but I can't quite carry enough speed ( more practice needed) I end up changing up to 4th during the exit of coppice as I'm on the limiter in 3rd. of course your car may be a bit different if it has the turbo box. best thing would be a chance to follow someone like markk's lines as I know he's quick at donington. (fastest of 1.21 in his old 944 race car I think - I wonder how the 968 compares.)
 
Sounds exactly the same for me, tried going though the old haipin in 4th and I just couldn't carry the speed, but tbh 3rd felt better. I'm not sure on the ratio's for the turbo box against the S2 one, anyone know? Also had a good read through your build thread, might do some brake cooling ducts similar to yours Ed....
 
Your brakes will stand up a bit better to heat as the pads are much larger Try some PF97 pads if you really want awesome brakes.. [:D] I've just bought some for my S2 for £90. Not cheap for your calipers though (I've just looked back & seen you have pagid RS29's already, so maybe disregard all of that) As you can see on my thread, routing the ducting is a bit of a pain, but a smaller washer bottle helps a lot. My old 944 turbo had 968 lower arms, so I fitted the 968 brake cooling kit - pretty cheap, very easy to fit and effective I think the turbo box has a longer final drive - with a higher top speed. It would be interesting to check rpm at a certain speed - say 60mph (GPS) in 4th & compare
 
My car actually doesn't have M030 brakes as per the advert, they mixed it up with M030 arbs! It brakes well on the standard set up an hasn't suffered from any fade yet, new disc's are standing up well. I had a 365mm 8 pot setup on my audi S4 and the £500 a set disc warped after a few laps, not cheap! I'll check the rpm via gps and compare with yours, just need to sort the pro max chip now.... I have another issue now, tyres. Only 888's fit and match the current wheels unless I drop the profile and rolling radius, I'd prefer the toyo R1-R's which i cant get in 16's for the rears as I'm using it on the road also....

That's a cracking price Simon... I'd recommend 225/45/17 all round - but you will need some new wheels [:D] (see my thread for top tips..) A square setup is much nicer to drive on track as it removes a bit of early corner understeer I'm running on Yoko AD08 - been quoted £130 per tyre fitted inc VAT by my local tyre place last month. They are great tyres & come out really well on track tests - I read a French one recently where they were only (just) beaten by A048's. They also have more tread depth and last really well. Better and cheaper than R-1R. If you stayed on 16" wheels, 225/50/16 AD08 would work, although the 17" tyre is cheaper. I used to run my turbo on 225/50/16 Pirelli Corsa track tyres & it was absolutely fine for grip. Shame about 030 brakes - a bit of a poor effort on the sellers part...They are quite a valuable piece of kit including the hub.
 
Thanks Simon Federal don't do my required setup 205/55/16 F 245/45/16 R I'd have them otherwise as I know a few people who rate then highly.
 
In line with Eds (who I usually agree with) advice above, Id look at changing sizes! 205 & 245 is very, very wrong and terribly mismatched. Even if you needed 245 rears, which you absolutely do not, then your fronts are far, far too narrow and all they do is promote understeer. Personally, Id be tempted to run one tyre size on your existing wheels to see how it goes. Probably 225/45/17. If you decide to buy another set of wheels, and they are cheap/undesirable so that isnt inpractical, then you can opt either for 225-44-17 / 215-40/45-17 all round on 4x fronts or maybe 255-40/-7 on 4x rears. Personally, Id opt for 225/45/17s all round on 4x rears - thisll stretch the tyres a little, which is always better. If the 215s would fit on the rears that you have (mine are 9", but 993 Winter Cups were available in different sizes), then Id be tempted to go narrower, to 215s, and work the tyre a little harder.
