help advice needed

ORIGINAL: bighead a little update guys, garage rang me today, stating that the coil and ignition amplifier has gone , so i replied WTF the Rac patrolman only just fitted a NEW ampliflier before the car was towed!!, so the garage replied "he had fitted the wrong one !!"(£83 out of pocket and counting ), so i said ok whats the "damage" this time , he replied £300ish , I said again WTF, how much is the coil ??, a silent moment on the phone ......then he said £130ish for parts and 3 hrs labour to fit !!, I said again WTF 3 hrs to fit !!( the first patrolman only took less than an hour to dis-mantle and re install !! ) I think i am been taken for a ride here , as I can to the job in an hour !. But its in their place....... so i give them the go ahead ( to save me time and hassle ), lesson learned now PSH never listen to the Patrolman advice ever again [:'(].
Sorry to hear of your continuing tales of woe mike, I suspected this would be the outcome both in regards to the patrolmans work and the specialist costs. Personally I'll never trust either ...... Here's hoping they do the job properly and you are happy with the repair even if not the price. Pete

Pete ...to be fair to the garage trade ,not all are like that (I know a few that are honest in their dealings with the public), but at the time i needed to get to work ( highly stressful job ), and need to get the car sorted, so with the Rac guy been so helpful...decide to trust his judement !. if I had more time I would of arranged it to be transported to the garge I normally use ( miles cheaper than these monkeys amd they dont rip you off ). anyway once again thankyou to all the members for the help/advice [:)]

We're all been there Mike, I used a so called top Porsche specialist three times before seeing the light. Each time there was evidence of bad workmanship , the third time was the last straw as it cost me a lot of money to put it right so I'll always do the work myself with my son's help of course from now one. Pete

agreed with you pete, i always try to do all the work if poss, but sometimes one do not have the range of tools that a commercial garage have access to , and i also work a 6 day week [;)] so all the work that i can't do goes to them [:D] ps.............wish i had a son that is a mechanic and can help me [:D], but all i have is a daughter and my wife that can't help and just spend my hard earn cash !![;)]

Well Mike if your ever down this way and have a problem your more than welcome to give me a call ( mobil in signature) and I'll persuade my son to help, mind you it wouldn't be the first time he's had a fellow 944 at work on his ramps, he doesn't take much persuading....:) Pete

Hi guys, just an update, car is back from garage....coil and ignition ampliflier change. car actually runs smoother now , maybe its getting a good spark at the plugs ? anyway thanks again guys

thats great news .[:D] best to just forget the expensive trauma getting there or it will sour your enjoyment of driving the car again. Next time see if there is another member living nearby who can come over and give you a hand. As pete says its best to do a job yourself if you want the security of knowing its been done properly .[;)]

yeah yr right ... I do try to do most jobs, but there are times things you can't do then its goes to the Stealers...but to be fair it would of cost as much as they did delivered the car back home to me on a Flatbed trailer so cant really complain .

Good to hear the cars back on track Mike, have fun with her. IMHO their worth every penny spent on them no matter what the cost. Pete

haha....Pete you should say that to my wife , she had a go at me today for buying a 23 year old car and spending £000s on its !! she said "why drive a 23 yrs old car when you have a E90 M3 parked outside the house and a Impreza P1 in the tuners !! ......to which I replied "some men like to have lots of girl friends , I just like to have lots of cars/bikes". That shut her up real quick [:D]

Haha.... Mine's the same but to be fair to her she lets me spend vast sums to keep the old girl running but them we have had a lot of fun in her over the last 14 years. A number of Porsche drives like the Lake District, Le Mans, various PCGB annual weekends away, Concourse, RWYB days at Santa Pod, etc, etc. Mind you she's not to keen on the latest expenses which I can understand, I mean what nutter spends £800 on some studs and £560 on engine bearings, not a lot to show for the money spent. I did laugh the other day when someone on the forum ( can't remember who) stated that our cars cost the same to run as a Ford....??? My son has rebuilt his Cossie countless times now for less and uses the cost of Porsche spares as his reason for sticking with Ford, my response being if he had a Porsche he wouldn't have to keep rebuilding engines and trannies...:) Pete

On the theme of "specialist" we have a local "Classic Specialist" i sold my Turbo S some years ag to Johno who does not do the spanners so the car went there,i bought the car back off him after regretting selling it, i am still sorting out bodge jobs, poor workmanship indeed, some of the bills are shocking, i see this guy on a regular basis at local car shows ad the like, he won't look me in the eye or mention the car. Complete Charlatan !

Frenchy I'll tell you a real horror story and another reason why I'll never let anyone touch my car again. This goes back to the same specialist who I spoke of before but haven't named and shall stay that way. I mentioned the bad workmanship after three visits, what I didn't mentioned was what was discovered years later. Now I hear you say how can I say something that was discovered years later was the fault of a previous job and not wear and tear? Ok how's this for a horror story, when I stripped my car down it was noticed that the water pump ( fitted by specialist) had not had the plastic pipe drilled out that feeds the turbo, this is left when fitted to a N/A car. Yep no so called specialists for me, hell I wouldn't even let Porsche themselves near my car as its very unlikely that they'll have a mechanic who knows the 944 as well as I do now plus with all of the mods on it he'd have more chance with the space schuttle...:) Pete

to be fair to Ford........... cosworth engines that need rebuilding "usually" run very high bhp(400+)so are bound to stretch the engine internals, had the same probs with my P1...... when running slightly higher power (360ish) it would be fine , but when i took it to 450bhp+ that when things go wrong(2.5 forged engine )after the install forged engine and remapping of the motec, ran it in carefully then the headgasket would start to "lift" under high boost so you don't really notice it under normal driving, anyway to cut a long story short car is getting a 2.35 closed deck block fitted so its "should" be good for a reliable 500+bhp daily runner or should i say supercar slayer [;)] Pete from the sound of yr comment........is your turbo running huge bhp ?

Hi Mike, power is given in my sig, not as impressive as yours but I hope to achieve a safe +450bhp this time around, but it will take time as I can't afford to do everything planned at once. As I said elsewhere I'll get the car running again at the previous power, run her in at that and then turn the heat up so to speak with even more mods, mainly exhaust and EMS. There will be a number of new mods from the start though, SFR large intercooler, SFR oil cooler, lightened flywheel, paddle clutch plus the already mentioned new internals added to which there will also be a crank scrapper and sump baffle. Lot to get on with as you can see..:) Pete

lol my bad again...i must be getting old !! Well if yr gonna run 450+ in the turbo you need 4 wheel drive [;)], my P1 was spinning the rears in second gear when running 460+and thats AWD !!. All these mods hit you really hard in to pocket( bought mine P1 in 2002 for £22K...i've spent best part of £40k on its already and still counting, the lastest 2.35 conversion will probably cost around £8K +), but no matter as you can't take it with you 6ft under [:D].

Hi there 944man, yes vaguely remmember yr username , my username is the same on scoobynet so what you wanna know about the P1 [;)]
ORIGINAL: 944 man Id be interested to hear about the P1. I love Classics - on other forums my username is GC8. [:D]

Block, heads, cams, rods, who is building it, what turbo, what ECU, who is mapping it, which transmission.. everything really? As a 2.3l Im guessing that its an EJ20 block?
