(For extra brownie points you need to proclaim that the 944 has never been equalled, let alone bettered by Porsche, but that's probably why you bought one in the first place, eh?)

i'm hoping i don't encounter too much rust! and this is the 1st Porsche i've ever owned, previous car was a 320BHP BMW 2002 turbo. been a bimmer fan for years, drive Ferrari at work so don't see the point in driving one in my free time as well, i will post my views on the 944 once i've had some time to play ;o)

It would keep life simple if we called the late cars "oval-dash", as most people understand this without needing a degree in 944 evolution. It's perfectly correct to get all pedantic over the difference between "super" and "series", but does add to the confusion.[8|]

Sounds right, if it's the 8 valve engine. It's either that, or a turbo (will have a turbo fitted lol) or a 16 valve "S", with a 16 valve head fitted.

Probably best for future accusition of parts to forget using the word series.. if I understand you correctly you have a Porsche 944 lux 2.5 oval dash if so it's a good choice of car.
This car was voted as the best handling car in the US in the 80's, it was also voted as the car most wanted by customers in the UK and as Dr F.Porsche himself said " To my family, the 944 is more than a new car. It is a new and true Porsche."
You can't get better than that...[][]

With regards to pedantry: I feel that it would be best/easiest if everyone used the correct terms to describe their car. This way thered be much less confusion, and help and advice coud be more easily obtained on the forum: and parts, both new and used, off the forum. So much confusion is caused by people adopting incorrect and made-up names for their cars: which only exist because they arent familiar with the correct names. Suggesting your own favourite, incorrect term, for use wont add clairty, nor will it help a new user.....

It isnt the factory term. Absolute proof of this (smug-Turbo-owner-perpetuated, usually with an 'Im clever and know more than you' wink) myth being false can be found by looking at right hand drive 944 or 944 Turbo VINs. Using the Turbo as an example, they will read: WPOzzz95zHN10xxxx. You can see from thi that the factory regarded a right hand drive 944 Turbo as a 951; not a 952. 952 is the part number prefix for right hand drive specific parts, thats all. Going back to my earlier post: its just another incorrectly made up name...

Yeah, will do as soon as the weather clears up! I've not had a decent weekend since I bought it, although I've done a few bits and pieces, hopefully I'll get out in it again this weekend, but I also have a rally car I need to get prepped for its next event so it could have to wait a bit!

Hello back, and welcome.

A very large number of the 924 / 944 / 968 family make a bit of a whine from the transaxle, and indeed many of them did it from new. In most cases it is a steady-state thing that does not get worse. Going by your description as "slight whine (very slight)" I would say no problem.

Unless you have a record of it being done recently I would change the transmission oil at the next service anyway, as it is likely to be old and nasty, and a good dose of fresh oil can only improve it.

Whine is usual but I would be very surprised if a 1983 square dash car had an LSD.
Its very difficult to tell a LSD from the outside, but jack up both wheels and turn 1 wheel, if the other turns the same way its an LSD if the opposite way its not!
Where abouts are you?
