The only real way to judge how bad the gearbox whine is would be to get a ride in a few other cars. I'd say that anything less than you needing ear-protection whilst driving is no problem.
Do change the gearbox oil, it's a very cheap job and can only be a good thing. Just make sure the fill plug comes out before you drain it - one will be soaked in oil and easy to remove, the other one might not and then it's too late. [&:]

I will echo some of the comments on here about the exceptional support available through this forum to owners of these fantastic cars.
Mine also whines. I accept this as a feature of the car and makes it feel more like a race-car (to me anyway!)
I love the colour by the way[

surely this must be one of the lowest mileage 944 turbos in the country [
I'm afraid the turbo always was, and always will be, unloved. It's an impressive car, but sits in the shade of the S2 which is the superior model by some margin. That's not to denigrate the turbo - it's a cracker, and I'm glad you are enjoying it.
Let us know when you have had enough of it and we'll introduce you to a real 944!
Oli.
P.S. Regular posters on here will no doubt comment on this post. Please ignore those comments, unless they are fellow S2 owners! [
Now, back to the inferiority of the Turbo compared with the S2 ....
Oli.
P.S. My S2 is nicely modified, thank you! And it cost a LOT less than the king's ransom you turbo boys seem to pour into your waggons. [
