Introducing the new 911

I am pleased to let you know that the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S models have been officially announced worldwide today.

Key elements of the 911 have not been changed - the flat-six engine, the distinctive layout with the engine at the rear and the unique aerodynamic shape. However, the engineers have poured countless hours into developing an all-new bodyshell, featuring a roofline that is lower, a longer wheelbase and a wider front track to further improve the dynamic character of the car. The look and feel of the interior takes clear design cues from the Carrera GT while new materials and technology combine to significantly reduce weight and consequently CO2 emissions, improving both performance and fuel consumption.

The engine capacity in the new 911 Carrera is reduced to 3.4 litres, yet delivers more power, 350 hp and 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, while the 3.8 litre engine in the new 911 Carrera S produces 400 hp and a 0 to 62 mph time of only 4.3 seconds.

Both models deliver impressive fuel consumption "" 34.4 mpg* for the 911 Carrera on a combined cycle and 32.4 mpg* for the 911 Carrera S. Emissions figures are equally impressive - 194 g/km for the 911 Carrera and 205 g/km for the Carrera S.

The new two wheel drive 911 Carrera Coupé models will be on sale from 17 December 2011 and pricing is as follows:

911 Carrera £71,449.00 (inc. VAT at 20%)
911 Carrera S £81,242.00 (inc. VAT at 20%)

An order for either of these models can be made by placing a £3,000 deposit with our Porsche Centre. Included in the price is a Porsche Driving Experience at the Porsche Driving Experience Centre Silverstone and a three year warranty.

For more information on the new 911 please contact us on 0118 9303911 or alternatively visit www.porsche.co.uk where more details will be available shortly.

Chassis and technology

Increased length (56mm), wider front track (52mm), longer wheel base (100mm) and larger wheels as standard all provide a more dynamic driving experience. Now standard on the Carrera S, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) adds to the agile nature of the car, and available as an option for the first time is Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) "" an active chassis system which further enhances the sporting nature of the new 911.

Interior

Look and feel of the interior adopts design cues from the Carrera GT with a raised centre console and luxurious materials. Redesigned seats combine greater comfort with more support and now feature 4-way electric adjustment. A new addition to the instrument cluster is a high resolution 4.6-inch full VGA TFT colour display giving key information to the driver such as navigation instructions.

Reduced weight

All-new bodyshell of aluminium-steel composite and other lightweight materials result in a significantly lighter car (up to 45kg lighter vs. the previous model). These elements contribute to an improved power to weight ratio as well as significant advancements in performance and efficiency.

Just received the same from Bristol OPC.

Got tickets for Frankfurt Motor Show, so looking forward to seeing it there!

I'm going to arrange an OPC Reading visit as soon as they or Porsche GB have one in for us to view.

I think it's safe to say that several thousands of those e-mails will be hitting inboxes today! (Had mine too)
So the base price is up by around 10% which should mean that the turbo will start around £121k before options if they carry that rise.......hmmm

Apparently I have been invited to the car's launch on the 5th Dec - news to me! So I will take lots of pics then.

Claus suggests we arrange something in January for a Reading visit...

20% VAT certainly isn't helping matters. I am surprised ANYONE is buy new cars these days here in the UK!

VAT at 20% certainly doesn't help but unlikely to head south for some time. My thinking (and delusional self justification) is that the new price for a 2S is about 7% up on the outgoing model but will include PTV and possibly satnav plus the power upgrade similar to the GTS. So I've taken the brave pill and put down my deposit for a March delivery...

Well the secret to reducing depreciation as much as possible is to get an early release car on a new model, run it for 18 months, then sell for nearly what you paid for it (as the demand will still be high).

I guess repeat for the Turbo or GT3, but then I don't know what you are supposed to do until the 992 comes out!

For some reason the S will be 400 bhp, 8 bhp down on the 997 GTS
Perhaps they will offer a similar power kit upgrade option as per the 997?

Yeh, Osborne said in Jan that 20% was now permanent: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/georgeosborne/8240099/George-Osborne-VAT-wont-go-back-down.html [:(]

Wondering about the new brake energy recapturing thingamajig (like KERS in F1).

Do you get a boost button like they do in F1? Or does this just go into powering all the extra buttons/gizmos on the car?

Maybe it charges a secondary battery so you don't need a trickle charger and therefore makes the main battery last more than 2-3 years before it fails [:)]

btw: When is the new 991 sub-forum starting ???

I think the performance figures are impressive, particulary for the Carrera with 'only' 350 bhp, 0-62 in 4.4s with PDK in Sport Plus mode.

I too wonder why the Carrera S has less power than the 997.2 Carrera GTS. Maybe to achieve th efficiency and emissions targets they were aiming for. Nevertheless, the performance figures are impressive regardless of the actual power figure.

Interior and exterior looks good (except the door mirrors, they're OK, but I wouldn't say they are an improvement and to say in the press release that they "emphasise the visual impression of width" seems like a strange design goal worthy enough to go in the press release).

All in all I think it is enough of an improvement to entice customers to upgrade and attract new customers from marques such as Aston and Maserati with that rear end.

When would a new forum typically start? Would seem a little premature before there are any 991 owners to discuss their experiences.

Here they don't usually launch an area until it's requested and the model has been launched- I know that seems way behind every other forum!! but thats how it seems to be..
I think it's time that one is launched to keep the chat in one place... however they would need probably a moderator and the club I'd hope is already looking for a RS to run the register..

As the new prospective owners discuss the options and specs, I think it's own area is quite an advantage...
I'm not too keen on the idea of the 997 area flooded with owners discussing their spec, although a fair few of these owners may currently be 977 owners and active forum members...

All I need is a moderator to look after the 991 forum area and I can set this up for you. No need to wait for an RS, that will come later.

Would be an advantage if it was someone who had 'intentions' of buying one but its not necessary.

Just let me know.
