I was always told that their should be fully warmed up before giving it anything like "zee beans". That means the oil should be at its normal working temperature , ie above 100°. Just above the blue marker is still far too cold.

 
42mpg! 😲

I cant even get that out of my 2ltr diesel Kia 😁

I’ve had 32mpg out of my 987.2 S on a long motorway cruise sat at 70mph and thought that was good going.

if I can get anything like 35mpg on a gentle cruise in the GTS4.0 I’ll be happy. But hey, we’re not buying these cars for fuel efficiency reasons (although covering long motorway miles economically to get to the places with interesting roads is a bonus 👍🏻).

now back to the ‘important’ stuff…. 😉

Light design package (read one of you specced it and not that fussed by it) - anyone else got it? Thoughts on it please?

 
Trust me. It’ll save the earache when the other half can’t put her lippy on ‘cause there’s no light in the sunvisors.

You do get some nice footwell lights and door pocket lights as well though 😁

 
Do the footwell and door pocket And door handle lights stay illuminated, or dim down once you’re in and driving?

also what does the overhead console

ambient lighting be do? Stay in low, or go off? Is it adjustable?

just trying to tweak ‘final’ options, in readiness for a build date (hopefully soon). 🤷‍♂️

 
The dome light is a small U shaped LED strip. It stays on as do the footwell lights and door pocket lights, but you can adjust them from off to full on brightness if you need to.

i do find the sun visor lights in my 987 handy if faffing with my contacts, or something in my eye - though not a regular occurrence.

can’t say i’ve ever sat in mine and thought I wish I had footwell / door pocket / door handle lights. That said though, my wife’s mini has all those and I rather like the ‘ambience’ they provide.

also Ive realised there’s a couple of ‘puddle’ lights in my 987 overhead console that seem to shine a gentle light down onto aircon controls and the storage space just in front of the gear lever, which is quite handy low-level illumination. I wonder if my 987 had some sort of equivalent ‘light design’ package from that era 🤔

so I’m thinking the 718 light design package might be a useful and equivalent option.

general Q to those who have now received their GTS4.0 - is there anything you didn’t spec that you now wish you had, and visa-versa, anything you did spec that in hindsight you think was unnecessary / wasted money?

ive never actually bought a brand new car before (usually ex-demo / pre-reg), so it’s the first time I’ve had complete free reign with the spec and it’s proving more challenging than I anticipated. 🤷‍♂️

I have had two brand new Boxster GTS4.0 cars, the first one I specified myself, the second was a showroom car so no choice;

The things I miss most that the second car doesn't have are:

Speed limit indicator (camera based) - surprisingly useful, as the GPS data is often wrong / out of date.

PDLS+ LED lights. The PDLS Bi-Xenons are nothing like as good

Lane Change Assist. Didn't think I needed it but my wife said it better to have it. Turned out to be useful on motorways and on track. Obviously can live without it, but I'd spec it again if I get the chance.

PCCB brakes. Really miss these, mostly for the improvement in ride quality, but also smoothness and power when braking. Academic at the moment as not currently available

Things I'm not sure about.

Multi function steering wheel with heating. I prefer the steering wheel unadorned, and it's much nicer to use the column stick for the computer / right hand instrument screen archer than the rolling button on the wheel. However I do miss the wheel being heated, as my car is a Boxster. Not as much as I thought because the second car has faceted wheel which is good when wearing gloves. What I'd really like is a heated wheel with no buttons.

PDK gearbox. first car manual, second PDK. Still not decided but lets not go there now.

Things that are better in second car.

18 way seats. Surprised by this but against expectations the 18 ways are more comfortable than the manual ways. better distribution of padding and lumbar support. I was very happy with the standard manual sports plus seats but these 18 ways are better still.

 
just had a look at your build on another thread and from what I can see personally, I'd add speed limit display and the multifunction heated steering wheel. I prefer it to having the somewhat cumbersome stalk. You do have to be careful though as you can go above and beyond your budget.

Everyone's opinion is different so go over things with your other half one last time before you go firm.

I think the spearing wheel is a special request option. Best not to crash with this option

 
One thing I missed was the air compressor, make sure you tick that box. Happy with all of the spec, went with manual seats after having 18 way, manuals are perfect, set and forget. Also glad I didn't go for the reversing camera, beeps are fine. A little bit of aesthetics I wish I had gone for the steering column in leather, went for extended leather but didn't tick this box.

The heated sterring wheel has been fantastic in the cold weather and I'd highly recommend that, I also stayed with the standard headlining.

Thanks each and all for very insightful reflections on your options and suggested additions for mine.

ive since deleted the guards red chrono dial face, I think it’s a bit too ‘bright’ and I like the subtleness of the ‘bevel cut’ face in standard black. I’ve also changed from guards red belts to Bordeaux red, again a little more subtle.

i had thought about the speed limit display option - possibly licence saving / points avoiding.

everytime I’ve driven a car at the PEC with MF wheel I keep inadvertently turning the heating on which just irks me. I also like the clean unfussy nature of the standard wheel - reminds me of the (possibly nicest wheel ever) sports design wheel in my 987. I rarely drive my porker in anything below zero degrees and she’s garaged so im rarely handling a cold wheel. Does racetex get cold like leather does?

i have selected the air compressor as i used once in the 987 and it got me home 👍🏻 Incidentally, if you ever use the tyre sealing gunk in the kit replace it with a bottle from any brand in the VAG group - I bought a skoda bottle for <half the price from Porsche and it is exactly the same stuff, even the same part no. on the bottle, just a different brand badge printed on it… 🙄

Windy, Racetex nothing like as cold as leather.

Compressor is indeed useful, and if you specify it it goes with a custom holder by the battery.

i got a compressor for mine (at cost price) but have had to cobble together a mounting for it by the battery. Even if you never attempt to use the sealant having a compressor is useful

 
I've been a bit disappointed with the speed indicator especially where there is a 20mph limit or roads cross over, not as accurate as I would want it to be. However still glad I ticked that box.

 
I removed the large plastic tray covering the battery at the weekend to see where the air compressor mounts and noticed that Porsche are now being quite economical with the paint. Probably more noticeable due to the car being Python Green but it seems like the current approach is ' if you cant see it , don't paint it'. Pretty sure that my 987 (Basalt Black) and 981's ( Guards Red) had complete paint coverage rather than leaving the unseen areas in primer.

Anyone else noticed this or is it unique to certain colours?

Neil,

That sounds very cheapskate for a so-called “premium” make … the type of practise associated with the Japanise cars many years ago (I’m not sure if that’s still the case?) where the whole under-bonnet area was matt paint.

I’m sure I read somewhere that PTS isn’t carried out in the main paint shop … contracted out perhaps? Maybe the same applies to the special colours?

Not with my `21` Honda, it was built in Swindon though [:)]

I am not sure about "now", my 2013 981 although less easy to see with white but the back of the frunk has less paint.

Whereas on a 2022 build in a stronger colour, it is easy to see.
