991.2 - Turbocharger Replacement (Smoke)

2018 991.2 Now at 35k and the passenger lhs bank 1 turbo has started leaking oil.
Heard a loud hiss from that side on a run out thinking it was a tyre but turned out to be failing turbo.
Felt a little down on power.
Not noticed any smoke yet.

Now booked in for replacement at OPC under warranty.
Any thing else I should be expecting to have checked and replaced due to this turbo failing.

The AOS some piping and drivers side turbo was replaced under 5k ago.

Do you think this is going to keep happening on the 991.2 model ?

it does seem quite common, apparently because of the design of the AOS and pipes. im not clear if they have been revised and a new version is now fitted when this failure happens? May be worth asking them.

I had both turbos replaced and all pipe work last year

Hi
Iam surprised that you guys are still having the issues on these cars.

I dealt with 3 cars shortly before I left RPM Specialist Cars in Knaresborough a few years ago.
At the time the original turbos, especially the r/h turbo had issues with the wastegate lever on the turbo seizing up.

And we found that the turbo was full of oil.

I managed to get hold of a Porsche TSB that covered the oil issue, it was due to aluminium chips produced durring the manufacturer of the turbo oil catch tanks.
The TSB, required the replacement of turbo intake and pressure pipes along with new oil catch tanks to be fitted.
The TSB was dated 18/09/2018, SY211655, the symptom was blue smoke after start up.
We had to change both turbos which had been modified to fix the seizing waste gate lever, issue, they had a protected cover over the levers.
Sadly they weren't covered under warranty.

Unfortunately Porsche would not contribute to the repair, so the customer paid us.

On this car the AOS outlet pipe was connected to the r/h turbo directly and the pipe ran from the top of the engine to the bottom of the engine.

To me it seems ridiculous that this should be happening to turbos on these cars.

Is it the turbos, or something connected to them.
I have a friend that manufacturers turbos and if we could get hold of a faulty one we could have a look at see what the cause of failure is.

Good job you have a Porsche Extended Warranty

Could you keep me in the loop, please

Kind Regards
Dave
