OK guys, as I am in the process of stripping out the inside of my car I thought I would start compiling a list of how much stuff weighs. I will edit this message from time to time as I add more bits to the list [Updated 12/3/12];

Carpet:
1) Rear load deck carpet 5.5 Kg
2) Rear floor carpet, in 90 S2 goes over transmission tunnel and finishes under front of seat 2.5Kg ish
3) Rear quarter carpet goes over wheel arch by rear seat and covers rear quarter in the boot, each side roughly 1Kg
4) Footwell carpet goes from front of seat and covers everthing else in the front apart from outside of each dash side, roughly 1 kg each
5) Some odds and ends of carpet that weight practically nothing so I haven't weighed them, they include 2 little pieces that cover the vertical front face of each seat, roughly 1 foot x 1 foot and 2 small pieces for each footwell under the dash on the outside i.e. on drivers side covers the ABS ECU on passenger side is the bonnet release.

Total is roughly 12Kg, much less then I expected.

Front Seats:
1) A leather sports seat from originally an 86 turbo (or may have been same age 911) = 27 Kg each
2) A pinstripe cloth seat from originally my 90 S2 = 24 Kg each

Total for sports front seats 54 Kg, much more then I expected and also tricky to balance on scales, Steph is not happy that I have scuffed her scales so some new scales and flowers will be required.

Rear Seats:
1) Seat base 90 pinstripe S2 and 86 turbo leather (vinyl really) = 3.4 Kg
2) Seat back including roller blind, 90 S2 and 86 turbo = 11 Kg

Headlining:
Includes roof rail rubber pads, front panel, rear panel and sun visors = 3.8 Kg

Spare wheel well stuff:
1) Tool roll, compressor and warning triangle = 3.2 Kg
2) Jack = 2.2 Kg
3) Spare wheel = 13.4 Kg

Sound Deadening;
Rather then break this down into individual pieces I will try and lump car sections together.
1) Rear of car from back of floor backwards but not including roof, = 7.5 Kg
2) Transmission tunnel excluding one small piece under heater which would have been a royal PITA to remove = 3.2 Kg
3) Passenger bulkhead = 3 Kg
4) Drivers side bulkhead = 3 Kg
5) Floor pads under your feet when in front seat = a tad over 2 kg each circa 4.5 Kg a pair

Total is roughly 22 Kg as there are a couple of little bits I couldn't get out easily so have left in for now. Note that this does not include the rock hard sound deadening pads that cover the trans tunnel and floor, and are body coloured. They seem to be a nightmare to get off so I have left them for now. Also note that headlining stuff I have listed separately. Also note 2, the transmission tunnel is a bit of a pain as much of it goes hard and brittle from age and heat and thus has a habit of coming apart in hundreds of pieces. The floor and bulkhead though just have to be eased out and come away leaving no residue at all on the panels, its just a tad uncomfortable being under the dash for so long.

Now for the big stuff that I know many of you have been waiting for;

Hatch (without struts or wiper) = 25.2 Kg
Sunroof panel (complete) = 9.6 Kg
Steel wing (complete) = 6.2 Kg
Front bumper PU complete with lights, bumper cross member and supports = 17.2 Kg
Front airdam that fits under the PU = 2.6 Kg in other words the front bumper total is roughly 20 Kg
Badge panel = 2.6 Kg
Bonnet complete but hinges still on car = 17.2 Kg
Stripped bare dash panel = 7.6 Kg + about 2 Kg for all the other bits of dash trim gives a total near to 10 Kg for the dash
Door (complete but with stowage bin armrest removed) = 27.4 Kg
Door stripped bare = 16.4 Kg
Electric window complete assembly = 2.4 Kg
Rear Bumper (complete) = 7.2 Kg
Wiring loom (complete except doors and engine loom) = 22.4 Kg
Headlight (complete but without painted cover) = 2.2Kg per side
Headlight motor = 2.2Kg
Headlight bar and bolts etc = roughly a kilo or so.

I am still a bit surprised at how heavy the doors are, especially considering that these are not normally mentioned and the Bonnet and wings are not really that heavy.

Gearbox with LSD = 55.6 Kg
Dansk SS replacement exhaust = 11.6 Kg,
OEM SS exhaust = 15Kg,
7"x16 Cup 1 wheel with Contisportcontact 205 N tyre = 16.6 Kg
7"x16 Cup 1 wheel with Hankook RS2 225 wide tyre = 18.4 Kg

Surprising just how much difference 2 different brands of tyre makes.
 
Great post Neil.

My plans are to remove some weight but in a fully reversible fashion:
  • Spare wheel & jack - 5kg'ish?
  • Remove 2 x electric seats (and package up carefully to store in loft!) - replace with 2 x7kg buckets
  • Remove rear load area carpet & store - replace with thin bound piece of carpet & velcro
  • Remove rear seat squab and backs

I reckon I could get to around 60kg net saving, going from some of your figures - hopefully even after I have bolted in one of Peter's (PJS917) roll bar/harness bars....

That would drop my car to around 1340kg inc 3/4 tank of fuel.

What is your target weight - for the car, I mean?![;)]

You could evaluate the weight of the seats from her own weight if you ask her to hold both seats in her arms while she tips the scales [;)]
 
I think she has had enough of car stuff all over the house Thom so I don't think that suggestion would go down to well [:D]

Paul I have 2 different rear seat sets which I will be weighing tomorrow, ISTR the figure you quote is in the right ball bark. Easiest way to save a lot of weight is ditch all seats, add back in pair of buckets and ditch spare wheel, compressor, jack and tools. That should save circa 70 Kg and is done in a day easy.

Biggest surprise so far has been the lack of weight in the headlining. I pulled the lot this evening, haven't weighed it all yet but TBH I doubt the whole lot is more then a few kilos, the only remotely heavy bit is the metal backed trim piece that sits just behind the windscreen.
 
Just in case anyone doesn't want to play spot the difference, I have updated a few moments ago to include rear seat, headlining and spare wheel related stuff.
 
I've just been going through my box of leftovers from the white car and have weighed the electric flag mirrors at 1.5kg each (excluding wiring). The standard washer bottle is just under 2kg including motors too.[:D]
 
Door cards, handles & map bins and the regulators weight 10.1 kilogrammes for both sides (5gks for the cards and 5.1kgs for the regulators).

I have my eye on the wiring loom, seeing as much of it is redundant now: I bet that that is good for well over 10 kilos!

Blooming eck. I just added that lot up and I have stripped 125 Kg in weight out of the car. Don't forget that the factory weights are to DIN which puts my S2 at 1340 Kg with 90%+ tank of fuel and all other fluids full. I already stripped the stereo system before and the catalytic converter must have weighed 20 Kg, it was amazingly heavy feeling.

I suspect the car as is now must be under 1200 Kg so anyone thinking of racing don't worry. I reckon the cars built from an acid dipped shell must be running plenty of balast to get back up to the weight limit. The fibreglass front end for these cars reportedly sheds a lot of weight, especially on race cars where the headlights and mechanism are all binned.

If your existing regulator is good then I wouldnt bother. The whole lot only weighs two and a half kilos and by the time youve done the saving is very small; and you have to spoil your door card too.

Good point, for now I will leave as is since I like electric windows and mine work really well (faster then my 968 for some reason). I have no idea what the real actual weight of the car is and haven't ever weighed it but I should know if I can get it corner weighted when the GAZ 2-way setup goes on. The 1340 Kg DIN comes out of my owners manual.

The door bins will likely have to go to get clearance for the cage.

I guess I have got the bug now and looking at the car this evening there isn't much left that can come out apart from spare wiring loom and I have a pile of bits taking up half the garage [:D]. Must stop, must stop [:D] Its addictive this stuff if I had kept going there wouldn't be much car left by now.
 
I wasnt particularly clear there Neil; sorry. The theoretical weight of my car is less than commonly quoted, as it doesnt have a sunroof. I didnt weight it before I started either: but I was surprised to weigh exactly 1,300 kilos after Id removed an awful lot of stuff... I am tempted to pile it all back in and weight the car again!
 
Well the seat going in weighs 6.5 Kg + side mounts + 6 point harness + 35 Kg cage probably means my net loss from a stock 90 S2 will be circa 100 Kg. This is assuming that my 125 Kg + stereo/speakers/cable + catalytic converter is very roughly 150 Kg. Will be very interesting to see what the end mass of the car is.

Simon you raced these cars, how much weight does a complete fibreglass front end save? ISTR that just a bonnet and wings saves about 30Kg.
 
A polycarbonate hatch and a GRP bonnet will save an impressive amount of weight, after youve exhausted the other options. Roadwheels are often overlooked and they can be very heavy. After that youre looking at smaller cumulative savings (like rubbing strips and drilling the rear bumper and the side impact bar in the doors (and the bulk of the inner skin). A Braille or similar battery can save 10kgs if you havent looked at that already? If youre prepared to spend a little more then you can buy a seat thatll weigh in at just over 5kgs (bare) too; saving up to five further kilogrammes. If youre prepared to tolerate sealed windows then you can save almost 10kgs by exchanging the door cards for simple wet laid CF parts (and a little less if you use aluminium) and fixing the windows in position. Polycarbonate side windows are extremely simple to make yourself and the 4mm material isnt particularly expensive if you look around (about £24 per square metre and 1.5 M² will be enough for all four windows and an extra rear ¼ with/without an air duct). 924 Carrera GTS lamps will save a good ten kilogrammes too..........
 
Removing the powersteering pump and running a patch pipe on the rack will save a good deal of weight too, although parking will be a little heavy. I bet that a high torque starter motor would save a huge amount of weight over the original too. If your car has air conditioning then thatd be straight on the garage floor... Its a shame that there doesnt appear to be a decent right hand drive GRP dashboard available: if you can find one then Id have it flocked along with the centre console, because the series two dashboards are extremely heavy (unlike the series one / 924 part, which weighs next to nothing).

Door cards are something that one way or another will be changed eventually. I know that on race cars you pin up the passenger side window since you only have to be able to open the drivers window. EMC had some lovely looking CF door cards on their S2 race car but ISTR Lali on here did something similar using CF effect plastic and the original panel top.

I have a Powervamp 25 which weighs 7 Kg compared to the stock 18 Kg battery, it starts the car OK but I have the stock battery in there at the moment whilst the car is sat outside etc. and can't sit on the charger. It also needs to be mounted somehow of course, would be tempting to stick it in the passenger footwell but I note that none of the race cars I have looked at do this.

Lucky for me I don't have an AC car so no worries there. I tried driving the car once without PAS and it was killing me at low speeds but I think I may have to get used to it.

I have 16" cup 1's from a 968 on the car and ISTR that these are about as lightweight a wheel as Porsche made outside of the Fuchs. They certainly felt lighter then D90's. This was something I looked at a couple of years back, the big big advantage of custom wheels being you can set the offsets such that spacers are not required (if used of course).
