981 Safety Recall

Hi Guys, Thought there might be some discussion on this topic. Just booked mine in and wonder what has caused this issue ?
On a positive note, values gone through roof but still a long way from new 4.0 GTS ??

Some discussion over on the boxster register facebook group - seems a number of people have had recall letters from Porsche UK - and there's some talk on other forums about "do they do an alignment or just bolt bits on".

I was surprised there weren't some postings in here from the "register" as well - but seems FB is more active.

According to a bulletin released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), they might have been equipped with a rear-axle carrier side section, described as representing the connection to the chassis components, that’s out-of-specification. Made by Brabant Alucast Services of Germany, the parts installed do not meet the required specification due to a manufacturing defect, and might fail altogether, increasing the risk of a crash due to a potential loss of vehicle control. Drivers could hear a rattling noise coming from the rear of the car, but a warning prior to failure is not ensured.

Yes I got a letter also, DVSA mandated recall for the reasons above. The MOT is due in Nov so have booked it in to have the recall and MOT done hopefully at the same time. It does depend on deliveries, lorry drivers, fuel and customs paperwork all coming together so who knows!

Mines a very early 981 so not sure if it's all or just a batch?

Thanks for update Paul. Richard, OPC Guildford say parts guaranteed for 7th Nov, so lets see what happens. Mines a 14 plate so might be a few numbers involved.

 
I've booked my March '13 Boxster S in at Swindon for December. At a local Region meet last night a 2012 Boxster S owner hadn't had a letter so possibly very early cars aren't affected. She's going to ring her OPC to check.

 
Mine is a December 2012 registered 981 2.7.

Received the letter the other day and booked in for 23rd November.

 
Hi Everyone

After much searching and discussion with Porsche I have been told that the models affected are

01.09.2012 to 31.01.2013 and 01.04.2014 to 31.07.2014

I hope this reassures those of us with a different build date and allows those within these dates to contact their local PCs.

I'm sure we (especially the 981 owners amongst us) would all like to thank Tracy very much for the research she's undertaken to clear this issue up for owners.

It's a great example of a Register Secretary doing her bit for her members.

Mine is a February 2012 981 S.

Got my letter just over two weeks ago, phoned Porsche Newcastle immediately.

They are not making actual dates for the work to be carried out until they have the parts.

So they are due to call me back when they do.

My MOT is due at the end of November which I usually get done early but presume it might be best to get done after the recall work has been carried out.

Interesting point about is there a need and/or will they doing 4 wheel laser alignment when the work is completed.

 
Just got mine booked in today for the 22nd November.

All day job apparently, possibly going in to second day.

Newcastle said they aim to do about 2 a week.

 
Hi Keith, mine was due to go in Monday but had email to say parts on Back Order, OPC says looking to rebook in new year ! Good luck with your booking.

 
Mine is booked in for early March as my OPC said they didn't expect parts to be available until maybe December. Mine will be SORN until end February so not that bothered and hope parts are readily available by then.

 
That's interesting.

Newcastle didn't appear to indicate there was a delay in the parts when I spoke to them today.

We will see.

As per usual, they were also very keen to do at the same visit my forthcoming MOT and ac service.

I declined.

i can see the decline a/c but if it’s due an mot then why not. theres a max charge of something like 55 quid for an mot - sure Halfords might do it for 35 but if they have it there anyway.….

 
In my defence .... (going off thread)

I have 4 sports cars and a local garage has been MOT'ing them for years.

They know my cars, are very thorough and will not pass or fail anything unless is 100% genuine.

And have only recently put up the MOT price from £30 to £35.

I have used dealers for servicing/MOT's for my company cars and my wife's Audi's for 20-30 years and they are always on the look out for additional work when a car is in their workshop.

That may be a sweeping generalisation statement which may not be true of all dealerships, but in my opinion it is.

I have used several Audi dealerships in the north east over the years and I could tell several stories of each one highlighting additional work when the car is in.

One phoned me up when our A3 was in saying it needed a new tyre as it had a nail in it.

They quoted a ridiculous price for a replacement.

I told them I would get a replacement from a tyre specialist.

When I got home and removed the wheel, the offending nail was actually embedded across a tread block and not into the tyre.

A different dealer said I needed new wiper blades when I had only fitted new Bosch ones about 6 weeks before.

My local garage knows I service and maintain all my cars myself when I can, so they know that if they find a reason to fail the car at MOT then it is most likely that I will do the repairs, they know they will not benefit from finding a "failure".

Another example, our A4 was service this time last year and I was advised the in line diesel fuel filter needed replacement.

Audi cost for filter and labour - £125.

I bought the filter from Euro Car Parts for £14 and I fitted it in 20 minutes.

Sorry but dealerships do not do themselves any favours.

Who do you think pays for all those snazzy showrooms that have cost millions of £'s.

I totally agree with this and would always try to support my local friendly garage with things like MoTs and tyre fitment rather than use a main dealer.

 
I sometimes get my local garage to do some work that is needed that I am capable of doing but I really don't want to do it.

Rare, but it has happened, and I know from their MOT standards they will do a guaranteed job.

Also, to Audi's defence, the CVT transmission fluid needed changing on our A4 last year which is imperative it is done at the correct interval apparently.

Their quote was £200.

A local german car specialist also quoted £200 but was prepared to give me a 10% discount.

But for £20 difference I preferred Audi to do it.

I investigated doing it myself, but too many specialist tools are required and the transmission fluid is bloody expensive.

So £200 for Audi to do it was very reasonable I thought.

But this was also they same time that they quoted £125 for the fuel filter change and £70 for a brake fluid change, which I also did myself.

 
My 981 Cayman went in yesterday and back today after having the recall. I got the letter about a month ago or so, they didn't have the parts at that time, booked it in for 8th of this month, they did the work, car perfect.

Porsche Colchester. Amazing.

Great OPC, and great service. For my courtesy car, they gave me one of Gordon Murray's new............... Oh wait.................

I can confirm, they did an alignment check before they did the work, and then a full alignment check after. They give you the sheet showing all of the relevant data too.

I will say this though. I have never heard of any car failing due to this specific reason...? Anyone else...?
