981 Safety Recall

My 981 Cayman went in yesterday and back today after having the recall. I got the letter about a month ago or so, they didn't have the parts at that time, booked it in for 8th of this month, they did the work, car perfect.

Porsche Colchester. Amazing.

Great OPC, and great service. For my courtesy car, they gave me one of Gordon Murray's new............... Oh wait.................

I can confirm, they did an alignment check before they did the work, and then a full alignment check after. They give you the sheet showing all of the relevant data too.

I will say this though. I have never heard of any car failing due to this specific reason...? Anyone else...?
good info re the alignment stuff. I too have not heard any actually failing but I can imagine that the whole of the VAG brand being very sensitive to possible litigation and therefore coming clean abs saying “don’t track your car“ gives them a lower risk profile.

Our GTS is at Calcot OPC, booked in when I got the letter for work to be completed on Monday/Tuesday 8th/9th Nov as they warned us it would be at least 2 days of work, got a call around 4pm today to see if they could hang on to car another day as (a) they where missing a specific bolt in the retrofit parts pack and (b) while Porsche was planning on 5 hours work to complete the recall they had so far spent close to 10 hours on my car as it was the first one they had done .. Luckily we don't need the car back today so was ok about them hanging onto it another day .. Good luck to others getting the work done on their cars

Yes I guess so. I did think after posting that, if there were any failures, maybe a track day would show it up.

Colchester told me that mine was their first also. I had visions of the entire back coming off. They had it 9:00am 8th, and then called today 9th at 11:00ish.

Having booked mine into Newcastle on the 22nd, they did indicate that the work might go into the second day.

No offer of a courtesy car though.

And I did mention 4 wheel alignment which I was assured does occur but think I will ask again when dropping the car off.

Nice .. As we pulled out of car park at OPC on Monday they had 3 transporters of Taycans being delivered, all had registrations all ready on them which where all RV71 ones (Reading area) so I wondered if new press cars for Porsche GB, we drove home via a bit of the standard Reading OPC "test drive" route and saw 5 Taycans .. wonder if they took over the workshop

When I booked was given bookings starting 8th Nov if no courtesy car or Late Jan 2022 if I wanted a courtesy car

Hi

Had exactly the same at Silverstone OPC this week, not the first they did (it was the second...) but bolts were again missing. Took 3 days but included an MOT so I was fine with the time taken all things considered.

Done now, thats the main thing.

Thanks

Took mine to Newcastle yesterday, expecting the work to run into the second day, I got a call at 16:15 to say it was completed.

Picked it up this morning and it seems the time to do the work is very much dependant on the spec of the vehicle being worked on.

It also appears that the supply of the replacement parts required to do the work for cars booked in are not what the OPC's were expecting.

My OPC seems to be struggling to get the parts. It was booked in for early December, but they still don’t have all of them. Anyone else experiencing the same delay?

So I finally got a call back from my OPC to say the parts were there and I’ve booked in for a couple of weeks time.

They said “it will take around 2 hours, do you want to wait for it?” I said it’s supposed to take 6 hours, so I’d better not!!

Maybe it’s the first one they’ve done?

Possible. I'd say 2 hours is unlikely. Personally I don't know, but from what I've read that would be a record. Ask them to check that, so your not waiting all day.

Mine was next day collection.

Mine was 3 days .. but was a very early one and seems the "parts kit" was missing some bits back then .. " days seems to be the norm

Don't forget that they should be doing a 4 wheel laser alignment once all the work has been carried out as they are replacing two major components on the rear suspension and the alignment may well be out once everything is bolted back into place.

Thanks folks, yes that’s a good shout re the alignment. I’ll insist on that before I take it back 👍

Mine is in for the recall at present along with the 111 point check.

OPC said they are replacing both sides, I thought it was just one side?

2 days now with a base Macan, I would have thought that was sufficient time to do the work

Hi all,

First time on forum and new to Porsche ownership so please forgive any naivety. 2014 Boxster just gone into OPC South Lakes for rear axle carrier recall. As expected they’ve found a variety of smaller things to work on but the big one which I can scarcely believe is £487 to replace the bolts on the exhaust/catalyst flanges. Apparently the job is priced on 2.5 hours of labour.

Given that the wheels and suspension will be off during the process which gives good access to the affected areas does this seem unreasonable to anyone? I know it’s a pig of a job but once you‘re in there anyway isn’t 2.5 hours a bit much? Or is it me? Any replies gratefully received😃

Regards

Mark

OPC labour rates are high - and they quote "book price" for some jobs. That said, for a number of things I find them close to a good independent (and actually have found OPC cheaper in some cases ) - this is one I would find someone else to do.

For this job the labour isn't putting the new bolts in, it's taking the old ones out - they aren't bolts from the factory - they are studs that need to be ground/drifted out.

A indy who has done it a number of times will quote less time and have a cheaper hourly rate. I know someone who had them done on a 987 ( which has 3 per side - I think the 981 has 2 per side ) - for about 300 - vs an OPC quote for 900 for the same job.

Suggest ask around you rlocal region for people who are good value ( note: not the same as cheap ) - and get some quotes - I reckon you may get the job done for perhaps half of the OPC quote as a guess.

Hi Mark,

I was informed recently by a Porsche Centre service staff member that their labour rates are £220/hr for cars less than 4-years old and £190/hr for cars more than 4-years old, so it looks as though your quote is about right given they will be working to Porsche’s book times regardless of any other work being undertaken. A ridiculous amount of money to replace a few bolts costing pence.

I’d be inclined to get the work done elsewhere with much lower labour rates. Have a word with a local exhaust specialist who should be able to do the job for a fraction of the price.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. I've just spoken to the guys at Ninemeister in Warrington who performed the assessment and service when I bought it to sense check the quote and it is a 2 hour job but, given their labour rates are about half those of the OPC, I think I may hold out until next year's service!

Cheers

Mark
