What a jagged journey it has been. Thank you all who have been kind in tolerating my story and giving moral support! I'll leave you all in Modified in Peace and Quiet. Please don’t leave us in peace and quiet! I’ve enjoyed following the story of your engine build, and I enjoyed the report of your Prescott weekend. I’m looking forward to reading more reports of the ongoing battle with the TVR and Pilbeam. Now if your wife can be persuaded that she needs new shoes and you need new boots…….l🙂 Maybe one day we’ll see you and the Lola at Gurston, the hill is not as fierce as you think, after all there are only 3 corners! I do a 'Race Report' on another motorsport focused Forum for years on this little car so I'll copy-n-paste on here. Won't be very exciting, but detailed.... That thread I started in 2008 and is still running with very nearly 800,000 hits. Gulp! Mrs Hillclimber has approved new slicks for Shelsley Walsh, but BMTR may not have the right ones! Waiting for a phone call. Spectated at Gurston several times, seen a few 'offs' too so Mrs HC not impressed. Long way to tow too, and prob a few more limp excuses. Jeff A little off topic, but a good few years back some of us (from the the titanic 944 list) went and did a day at the Prescott hill climb school, It was an excellent day (even if the hill climbing isn't the ideal event for a 944 turbo ( gears are too long and the boost too late for tight uphill corners - thats my excuse ;) ).Through the day a lot was learnt and great respect developed for those who compete - you have to be very focused and consistent to be fast! Highly recommended day out! A narrow, winding and undulating track with a significant amount of off-track “furniture” frighteningly close must concentrate the mind! 😲 A lot different from the race tracks I’ve driven where there are plenty of run-off areas for the over-confident driver (not me … thankfully!). Graham’s thread and Andrew’s input have piqued an interest for me, and I’m hoping to get along to a meeting some time this year; Prescott maybe, which (I think?) is the closest hillclimb track to me in North Beds. Jeff I have done a fair few tracks too, the speeds (mine especially :) ) were a lot lower at Prescott, the only off on our day was 'over the edge' on the fast right at the top by an experienced hill climber in a Lotus/Caterham 7 style car, damage was fairly minor, fortunately. 944T Coupe - personalised ;) but needing work 944T Cab - Standard GR Yaris Quote Reply #206

The Championship I do, the Midland, has 9 events/ year, 7 counting at the end of the year. Each event has 2 timed points scoring runs, and your best scores add up and you get a class and overall position. The trophy for winning my Class is rather nice and has my name on it 4 times whilst running this little club racer over the last decade or so. I want to add my name for the 5th time this year! We completed the 3rd round this weekend just past, Prescott, Shelsley and Loton Park. The points you get depends on the numbers in the class that race, max points for a class with 6 or more drivers in it etc. One in the class, 1 point. After Prescott a fresh set of slicks went on (£1320!) and I got used to this engine. I won't bore you with 'this happened, that happened' here but it sure is going well. The engine is fabulous, everything I set out to achieve has been realised, it's characteristics are idea for the hills where torque and flexibility is needed and a good dose of power ideal. I have super strong competition in the form of a radical TVR with about 400 bhp, light, and a driver with considerable circuit racing experience, so 2022 will be no breeze. However, the car is magic and working well, even the aged pilot is almost operational and the 'Team' is leading the class by 14 points, The engine is very revvy, sounds ballistic from the driver's seat and is a joy to drive and own. All those painful days are quickly fading into time as a result. Thought this little clip of the car at Loton might amuse, 3rd practice run on the Saturday. I really must make the effort to get along to a hillclimb event this year, and it would be great to see the car in action. Prescott’s the closest circuit to me, and I assume that you’re going to be there in July rather than for the Porsche at Prescott event in June? An old adversary for a decade or more. A hot TVR 5 litres, 450 bhp race chassis built/driven by a pro TVR race car shop. A 7 litre Pilbeam sports racer, 600+ bhp, and a 7 litre Holden Commodore (!) Oh, and me, 300 ish bhp in 560Kg. Of all the class runners, nearly all had 2 x the bhp etc, but none as light as the LOLA though the Mini is close! The video clip shows what a great chassis it has and it was a joy to drive. Never ever been this quick in my 31 years of hillclimbing. So, 2 race rounds, 2nd in class both times behind the EVOMini but crucially ahead of the TVR which was third on both runs. However, the EVO is not in my Championship, the rest are, so I have nett'd a further 4 points to my tally, keeping me firmly in the lead in the Championship class I'm in, Over 2 litres, Sports Libre. 3 more events left, so 6 race runs, thus the result could be very different at the end! I reset my PB's at Prescott 5 times and Loton 3 times but a better pb at Shelsley illuded me! Odd as it is a 'power hill' but not this time! That will be a target for 2033. Having the big TVR (5 litres) chasing me all the way was a big motivator and a bit of luck came to play too, but to win you have to prepare well and just try! Not sure how many more years i have with the car as age creeps in, but I hope 2 or 3 more. Club member since 1988 Quote Reply #220
