which tyres and tyre pressure queries

For road and track I had GoodYear Eagle on my S2. Very progressive and in a car I could hold in a tail slide on track like no other....

Anybody seen white H46 MCF recently?? Had a sighting at Highclere a few years ago...

My '88 220 Turbo runs 205 front and 255 rears, my understeer has been drastically reduced by switching from P6000s to Falken 452s on the front! I am on my second set of 452s on the rear, the first lasted 28,000 miles!
I'm thinking of going with Toyo R1R's. Anyone here have these? I wonder if they will help in the same way your new tyres helped Fat Albert? (Although I realise changing the tyre size may have a bigger impact.)

The Toyo R1R's are dedicated track tyre I believe and although I'm sure the are very good you may benefit from fitting a road based tyre, any of those recommend here will be fine, falken 452, Toyo Proxes T1R, Conti SportContact, are all good tyres at reasonable prices.

Again, pardon my ignorance but would fitting 235 front and keeping 255 on the rear reduce the impact of under steer?

This is assuming its possible to do so?

The problem is the rear - its massively over-tyred. No 944 has ever needed tyres like that at the back, even the M754 cup cars got by with 245s and they had very different suspension...

I am confused by this as the standard rear tyres are 255 on 9" rims. I also had a set of 225 track tyres that came off a race 944 that had spun into the wall wearing 225 all round.

255 section tyres are standard on the 968 CS and that has less power than most 944 turbo's, I dont think 255 or 245 tyres are that wide, its not like we are talking 295+ section here. The difference between 225, 245 and 255 isn't exactly going to be night and day either, perhaps some slight variations in grip, heat dissipation, etc. I would have thought you would get more grip by using a semi-slick tyre than say moving from 225 to 245 if thats what your after, most however would prob want all round, all weather tyres, like those listed here.

I finally managed to have the tyres changed today. I opted for 225/255 Michelin PS2 (N3). For some reason, finding a supplier with this combination of tyre size in stock wasn't as easy as I thought.

I've been out for a quick spin and what a difference the new tyres have made! (Admittedly the old tyres needed to be replaced but I've never been a huge fan of Pirelli P Zero's anyway.)

Thank you to everyone who offered their opinions.

My Lux is fitted with 215/45 17 front and 255/40 17 rear. it came with these wheels which I believe are 911 wheels. I run Falken FK 452 front and rear and fitted them not long after I got the car 4 years ago. They are now about half worn and have done about 16000 miles. Front tyre pressure is 28 psi and rear 32 psi. I have settled on these pressures after starting at the manual pressures and adjusting over time. I think the performance of the tyres overall is exceptional for the price. The handling is predictable wet or dry and I've had no problems with them with highly varied use. Last year we were one of the only cars to go over Newlands Top and the Honister pass in the Christmas Cracker run, which we did with no problems despite the snow and wet slush. I've been very pleased with them and will continue to use them.
The car is always driven enthusiastically and always seems to be well planted and it even feels as though the stability improves with increasing speed especially once past 100 (where legally permitted, of course).

I have now dropped my Fronts (452s) to 28PSI, I found that they tramlined and were too finicky at 30 or 32.
They are still a little skittish when cold but seem to soften nicely after about 10 minutes

Didn't the technical bulletin recommend 36psi when running 17's

I would not want to run below 30 at those sort of pressures if you run over a piece of debris on the road you stand a good chance of damaging the inner face of your alloy wheel.
