Which one?

The belts will need doing fairly soon (2004) and I fail to see how any of this matters one jot...

"Now if you know your 944's this has the original cass holder which the lid has not broke off & this is the amazing bit it has ALL of the inserts. Cigar lighter is orginal & never used. Spare wheel is orginal"

Probably quite a nice car, it looks good in the pics, but still rather over priced - I'd say it was worth £2k, maybe £2.5k tops.

Porsche Post is the PCGB club magazine and one of the many good reasons to consider becoming a club member [;)].

Forgot to add...

On all cars the general consensus seems to be that it's wise to do the belts every 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes soonest.

One the S and S2 you also need to do the chain and tensioner, they were never part of the original service schedule, but I think 50,000-70,000 mile is the general recommendation, I can't see that age has much to do with although I guess the tensioner slipper does harden with time, but it's quite easy and cheap to check.

Both my cars have chains and it doesn't worry me one bit, the cost per mile/year isn't much of a concern at all.

Hmm if a non broken cassette lid is a highlight of the car I would be a bit doubtful as to the rest of it...[8|] How much do they cost ? A tenner or so ?

I personally wouldn't discount the S or at a stretch the S2 at Trevs stated budget given the state of the market (not just 944's )right now. Might be a few gems at that price just need to go in with your eyes open and be aware of the points to check - belts being one of them (but not cassette holders)

Thanks for keeping me in the loop guys. The KA is sold so I now have a bit of a deposit... As posted earlier - I struggle to understand putting the same funds into a Lux, than a 'better' and up to four year newer S or even an S2. And I do understand why you were pointing me towards the Lux - and I had got me head round the idea. But the cost of a decent one...

'944Turbo (Tony)' posted saying that not to worry about the 16V bits (cam/belts etc) if they are new. How old / new would you recomend. Are they 'new' after 10K miles? How often should they be changed? How much? So many questions eh?

Remember. I am now in the market!!

If the tensioner is neglected the cams can get destroyed - there have also been cases of the surface hardening begining to fail, the cams should last at least 150k if the tensioners/chains are looked after maybe a lot more - and at least 15 years. The specialists all know about the tensioner issues - the slipper pad goes brittle and wears and will inspect them - but Porsche didn't as part of the original service schedule as it took some years to come to light. I imagine those who have spent out on new cams will look after the investment. There is the odd bodge though, I remember seeing pictures of a cam with braised on replacement teeth.

Yikes! That'd be a delicate job.

Well done that man. Good job if he got it working, I'd say.

(Hang about chaps. Did I miss something?)

looks like it has had some after market rear belts fitted, the fact its with a dealer makes it more pricey. Most have had the cassette inserts removed because it makes the armrest tray useful, wouldnt have said having them was a major selling point even on a concourse car - unless your music collection is on tape! [:D]

Think I might have a look at this one guys.

Fairly local, seems in good nick. Much better price. What about the seats though? Worth considering? He's sent me a pic of the passenger seat also, and it's not much better... Is it worth a punt and look-out for some replacement ones eh? Simple to swap over, or look out for a better package?

Trev

Definately worth a look, does seem rather too cheap, but every car you look at will get you more experience of what goes wrong. Those seats are rather bad and it's rare for both to go, however they're dead easy to swap over. Finding some in the same colour will be rather more difficult, but you'd probably get away with black ones in there and they'd still look good (especially if you replace the rear seats too). Alternatively it should be possible to have them retrimmed locally for a reasonable price.

In the nicest possible way I hope its a real dog!
Not wishing to waste your time or petrol but you really shouldn't be able to get a half way decent S2 for that money. I know times are hard but that's ridiculous.

ETA there were a set of newly retrimmed comfort seats on PH not long ago - they were linen leather but would look ok in this colour scheme and I don't imagine you would have much trouble getting the rears through ebay . Around £350 I think.

Have a look and see. Scruffy seats will put a lot of buyers off and will knock the price, as will the milage.

It's linen interior anyway, so those linen leather ones would go just fine.

Why is it pictured with two differing patterns of wheels on it?

I know exactly where you're coming from. Being optimistic bargains do exist (my 944S was a good example IMO), although they are few and far between. I'm sure this car will need some maintenance, especially as it hasn't been used much for the last few years, but I say get out there and have a look at every car you can, then you'll definately know a good one when you see it. Always try to resist the temptation to buy the first one you see...

I drove a very attractive blue 944 before mine, it was a dog and needed a lot of money spent on it, but driving it made me realise it was the right model for me and showed me a lot of areas where the cars can deteriorate. If the seller had dropped the price by the £1,5 to £2k required to get it sorted I'd have considered it, but (with hindsight) thankfully they declined. I visited a a few Porsche events and started to get a good idea how a good one would look and sound. So when I saw my white car I knew that is was basically a good 'un.

The wheels are mentioned in the ad, sounds like there's a choice.

It has two different number plates in the pictures too.

I want to know what that is towards the front of the door rubbing strip? Possibly just a sticker, but seems an odd place to put one.

The seats look to have pretty bad bolsters but the main squab seems sound so it could be easily retrimmed to have vinyl (or even leather) bolsters like a lot of them did from the factory.

I agree, have a look and a drive but I think it's probably rotten. If you look in pic 3 at the back of the sill below and behind the door the paint looks discoloured to me - sort of that diesel-on-water look you get with corrosion sometimes. It's not cheap enough if the seats and sills are knackered.

Cheers again. Will go and have a look. I did email asking him how the overall condition was, as the seat clearly shows signs of wear:

Hi Trev all the electrics work, the drivers seat has wear to the bolster as shown and passenger seat has a couple of splits in,i'll try to attach a photo, other than that everything is fine, bodywork is very good looks striking when polished,I now have a 911 so the car isn't getting the use it deserves,it's been an excellent trouble free 1st porsche,if you need any more info please let me know, regards Mark. ps James at Only nine has plenty of seats in leather or cloth, and there are always a lot on ebay.
I'll let ya know...

Good point about the wheels and the numberplate - well done Peter!

Why are there only pictures of the off-side of it?

Let us know how you get on Trev. Fat owner and a fat wife would explain the mangled seats. (I'm not fattist - just an observation.) Maybe worth asking how much he and his missis weigh before making a journey to go and see it. *

Oli.

* - This may or may not be a good idea. I'll leave you to work it out ...

I think you really need to take a look - the discolouring could just be shadows.

I had my sills repainted earlier this year & took some pics straight afterwards for a PCGB valuation. It was really hard not to get shadows on the sills & bottom of the arches.

Looks nice with the cup 2's, shame it's missing a turbo [;)]

You will be pleased to know... I have been to look at (and driven!) a 944 today.

You will also be pleased to know that I did not buy it.

The interior was superb. Full leather in showroom condition. An absolute treat. If you were looking for one with top-notch interior you would probably look no further. ALL the electrics work - I checked everything. Very good tyres all round, wouldn't need replacing for a while. Stainless steel exhaust - I looked underneath, you could put it on your mantelpiece. I looked down the 'grilles' near the door with my torch - dry and no rust. The brakes looked in good nick - drilled rear discs (standard?).

The bad. Loads of small chips - nothing serious. Drivers door latch difficult to open (had to really pull lever). Carpet in luggage compartment a little 'tatty' around press-studs. Chips on paintwork on edges of sunroof, and rubber around same perished in places - but didn't leak. Apparently. Spare wheel and compressor included. You can tell I have been paying attention...

There are receipts (I am told) for the belts etc. The seller told me that they would have probably been fitted. I must admit that I probably wouldn't know exactly what to look for with a bundle of paperwork...

The major thing is that it's on V Car Reg. Not sure what grade, but it's had a replacement drivers' door (maybe why the latch is problematic?). Is V Car Reg considered a huge problem?

It drove 'heavy'. I guess I will need to drive another to see whether this is normal. Is it normal for a 944 to be more of an animal than my new Focus STDi? It felt similar to my brothers Ferrari 308. Not new anymore...

Was I correct not to sign on the dotted line?
