What did you do with your 996 today?

It seems we were all out enjoying the bright sunny day. I travelled on the A505 to Fowlmere RSPB reserve for a walk and have never seen the car park overflowing before. Many Boxsters and 911's out enjoying the sun.

I recently had the coffin arms replaced and fitted a 997 short shifter kit. The car feels a lot tighter in corners and over bumps but the SSK is a revelation. Gear change is like a rifle bolt now whereas before it was a bit slack. Very pleased with the upgrade.

Bought a cover for it to keep the dust and crud off it while it’s stored in the garage.

can you guess the model (Without looking at my profile pic 😂)

Gave her an annual oil and filter change. Had a good look at the filter and couldn't see any sign of any debris, so please with that. Oil was also still quite clean. I had one radiator fan that wasn't running low speed when the AC was on and car stationary. Diagnosed the resistor was faulty. Quick search on another forum and I discovered you can use a resistor from RS components at a fraction of the cost. So I changed both out. Fans are now working correctly. MOT also passed the other day with no advisories.

Hi Andy

There was an atricle on the 996 Carerra Fb group by Russell B he quoted this part [link=https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/panel-mount-fixed-resistors/0188087/?fbclid=IwAR2bJEP-SuKxLo_LBTEiYWcC_Jrs5waSXF6jQ3sHom6NA_yEQMhxonUQcXA]https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/panel-mount-fixed-resistors/0188087/?fbclid=IwAR2bJEP-SuKxLo_LBTEiYWcC_Jrs5waSXF6jQ3sHom6NA_yEQMhxonUQcXA[/link]

He said " Heater resistor is an aftermarket unit from RS Components. Snipped the oem resistor off (looked absolutely fine - no cracks or breaks), stripped back the three wires, joined green/white wire with the solid white wire and connected to one end of the resistor and then the solid green wire to the other side of the resistor.

Started engine, put interior fan on, pressed the Air conditioning button and checked both radiator cooling fans came on... All good. " Hope this helps

Hi Graham

Have you got their part No or code for that resistor from RS ?

Regards Andy

HI Ian

Thanks, I changed mine for OEM ones about 10 years ago. Just looked at the price I paid which was £49 +vat - discount, the current price is £160 for the 3.4 & £134 that's each!!! for C4s rip off or what.

My only concern would be to advise not to mount them directly onto the plastic body panels as they get so hot. I‘ve seen one guy has fixed his to the old resistor thus using the original mounting clips giving good air flow around it which is far better.

Andy

Hello Andy - I bought the same one that Ian posted the link for. I mounted to the radiator frame in a similar place as the original. I secured in place with a jubilee clip. There is plenty of air flow from the fan to keep them cool - but to be safe I ensured it wasn't in contact with any plastic parts.

I have a pair of these ready to fit to my 996 but no engine in it at the moment. having the water pipe work and air con pipes to the engine replaced. whiles its in also having both rads and air con rads changed along with the 3rd rad fitted, water pump, thermostat, and AOS. its been a while

Took her for a spin and a poor photoshoot, then gave her a bath! :)

Yep agree, posting pictures is a royal pain...(nice piccies though...just looked at the links in the email)

I took mine to the office today to collect some bits that I need to continue WFH. Nice to get out and give it a run. On starting it turned over very slowly both on first start and when leaving the office, so suspect the winter has not been kind to the battery, probably not helped by the Y cable (shows 14v for a few minutes after cold start then sits just over 13v) limiting charging, so I will change that first.

The Y cable keeps coming up as a problem for slow cranking, can it not be replaced with just - 2 individual / normal - cables, do they have to be joined?

I've ordered the Y cable (£73 from OPC), but will happily measure hole sizes and individual lengths when it arrives so others can get something made up.
