what did you do to your 944 today

Although this one was a dyno cell at DanST Engineering in Shipley, I left with 480bhp and 455ft/lbs at 22psi of boost.

Was I tempted to turn it up to 25psi to see if it did 500+ . . . You betcha! But discretion is the better part of valour (and engine rebuilds) - more time was spent on the lower parts of the table and the car was so tractable and much easier to drive on the way home too.

Ah yes, bigger brakes are clearly needed.

That sounds like quite a peaky delivery and narrow power band, are you sure you got the cam timing correct?

Peak torque should be around 4k-4.5k rpm with standard cams regardless of forced induction.

I am sure your top end is held back by the standard-ish intercooler, but a great peak figure still.

On my car there are 2 pumps in the tank, the screen washer pump is a real PITA to get to. Before the MOT 3 years ago I was preparing to pull the tank, when the pump suddenly started working. This year the pump wasn't working again, but fortunately a few taps with a long extension bar woke it up. AFAIK the early cars/993 have a pump that's accessed via the top of the tank, and I'd convert to that rather than mucking about trying to access the lower pump. Someone here did this, may have been Eldavo?

It is quite peaky and laggy at the moment, good shout on the cam timing and I’ll admit that I didn’t set those up (or double check them) so that may something I need to look into as well. Never saw MATs more than 10-14 degrees over ambient so the end-tank mod intercooler can‘t be that bad!

Yes, they’re actually Big Black reps so the bleed nipples and balance pipe are in the right place. 965 part number discs.

 
Since you mention lag I would think that your turbo is large to the point that the std intercooler is too restrictive to let the compressor reach its peak efficiency area and flow anywhere near as much as it can, probably a reason why inlet temp is still "reasonable". Things should change already if you advance cam timing until the sweet spot - you may have to try different adjustments until you can find it, but you can always try the most advanced position as a start, though keep an eye or rather en ear on knock as advancing the IVC event will lower the knock threshold and you may need to adjust your ignition curve depending on how earlier boost builds. By then the restrictive nature of the standard intercooler will be the elephant in the room.

Well it's definitely leaking out when stationary a quick check today has confirmed. Get it up on my mates ramp when he can fit me in, 5L container of water in the rear footwell will keep me right for the time being. I think there are definitely 2 pumps, my mate reckons the headlamp washers are the usual culprit. I'll report back.

Definitely 2 pumps - the bottom one is for the headlight washers. IIRC it’s a pig to remove the tank too - I swapped mine out for a 964RS tank with 996 pump and removed the headlight washers.

That’s a really interesting point Thom - I didn’t really know much about the 16v cam timing until reading up and watching some videos after your comment. I spoke to Simon who built the engine and he told me that the cams weren’t setup when installed so I’ll start with max advance and move the ignition advance table across to the left too, I can then put it in the right place once I’ve got the results from the logs. Won’t be for a while yet as swapping the brakes over, repairing the ABS pump, dropping the fans to swap them out, etc. too

 
Getting the cam timing right is essential to get the engine to run correctly. When the cams are adjusted well then the engine should run and feel well at any load, regardless of boost. The turbo really is just there to support how much a top end can flow under boost but it really is the cams that dictate power delivery and the shape of the torque curve and how the engine responds dynamically.

The 16V cam pulley does not allow for much adjustment but should be enough if the compression ratio chosen was not too high or too low. The knock threshold will lower and exhaust gas temperature will increase when advancing IVC - it all makes sense as advancing IVC increases the dynamic compression ratio and causes a bump in low down torque at the cost of top end breathing.

I would suggest to trust how you feel from the driver's seat and engine response at least as much as what you can deduce from analysing the logs.

That you reach peak torque at such a high rpm suggests to me the cams may be not even just about half way on the adjustment range but nearer full retard. If that is the case then the engine must feel quite sluggish off boost... but then I am probably thinking too much here as the std intercooler must mess it all up anyway. You may not need to lower the ign advance "too much" when advancing the cams to full advance, but take it very easy on the first drive and just remove a few degrees in the areas where you hear knock when applying half load. Starting nearly from scratch by chopping down between 5 and 10° right away will be a chore.

I think if you roll your arches and have enough camber that early wheels will fit without stupidly stretched tyres.

I was reading your sig update and thinking - does WB stand for WideBody?

Can‘t wait to see it - I was offered a Broadfoot Kit (only about an hour from me) when I was having all my bodywork done but it was just at the wrong time otherwise I’d have gone down that route.

This is a lot more subtle than the fibreglass ones only 28mm either side - and NO cost as Im painting it anyway

you have to look twice to notice it but it does look more muscular.

Ive wanted to do this for years but not had the guts to take an angle grinder to the car - I’ve never done bodywork before but in my early career as was a car body designer BIW so I have a good eye and an understanding.

taught Myself welding and went for it so far I’m very happy with the results

i would love to do the same one day , always thought if the rear and front flares were slightly wider , the 944 would look so much more aggressive ..

i can’t say i like the wide body’s they use in america for racing these with the open backs [:'(]

this is gonna be amaizing ,.. i’m really interested to see side on photos f how your going about the cuts ect
