Wanted: bit of special help please

I'm asking if anyone with a 987 Boxster or Cayman would allow me to put their rear wheels onto my 987 Boxster to prove if the humming in my car is down to my current tyres.

I will do the wheel change and ask if you would come with me in my car for a run of a few miles to run my car a few times between 40 and 60 mph, the speed range the humming happens. This way you can be sure I won't drive off with your parts!
Bit of an ask I know.

I live close to Wolverhampton so would ask if anyone in the west midlands can help me.

Hope that finally you get a resolution to your problem Graham.

A bit late in the day now but one other thing that occurred to me is temporarily to try swapping the front and rear wheels, assuming there are no fouling issues at the front with the wider wheels.

Pleasure meeting Rob this morning, small world as it turned out and definitely on the same page with this issue.

We swapped the rears for 19" with good condition Pirelli tyres and 34 psi.

Drove it down the road, good condition, no pot holes even and at 54mph. Droning/humming was still there, maybe even worse, but the road noise was well down on what West Midlands roads are.
So, the noise is not from the tyres.
Returned and chatted about the problem, and Rob kindly offered to have the car on the vertical lift so he/we could take a good look at the rear of the car.

Could spot nothing obvious, OSR drive shaft plunge was not a easy as the NSR shaft, but the rest all looked 'innocent' so to speak.
We did notice that the trailing edge of the rear undertray seemed to be a bit too easy to move, so used 4 stout cable ties to keep it tight to the car.

The cover has 4 factory holes in the trailing edge as it there should be some rear cross support there, should there be one?

We discussed changing the rear wheel bearing and the drive shaft too, much food for thought. If you do the bearing you have to really do the shaft....

The drive home was slow but hit 54 mph several times and the noise had changed and 50% (say) quieter!

Time to look MUCH closer at those undertrays.
Now home Rob has offered more use of the ramp to look around the car, very much appreciated.

My wife is having some intense surgery on her teeth to morrow, so will need to 'be in attendance' this week rather than messing with cars...

Again, Rob, thanks for so much help and thinking time today, bet you won't get it out of your mind for a few days yet! Enjoy the wine (while thinking).

Sorry to hear not the tyres guess its decision time to either start replacing wheel bearings drive shafts ect or move the car on if its driving you mad.

Probably best just to drop the undertrays completely rather than messing about trying to refix them?

Well, at least it is not the tyres. Now off the list.
The hum appeared exactly at the same speed with both sets of tyres, 54 mph, same stretch of road by Rob's.

Removing the rear and centre shields is a good idea, simple to if only it was cooler! But simple and quick. If any of them are fluttering then if they
are not there they can't, or...

What is next?

The hard stuff. The wheel bearing; Rob gave me some good advice as he had just done one! He made it sound easy.

You need to remove the drive shaft (the hard bit) so it makes sense changing the shaft too while you are 'in-there'.

I feel I can't sell the car with this fault, though a new owner may not notice. If sold Trish would want me to have another sports car, and the direction of that is a Mazda RF.
EVERYONE has a Mazda MX5, my daughter has had 4 of them even.
Maybe a Honda S2000.
Not another Porsche though. Just about had enough of them right now.

One or two last pushes then We Buy Any Car.com, around £10,000.

Unless you really want another drop-head, how about a Toyota GT/GR 86?

Not there yet though Graham … still more to investigate. Typical engineer - you know you have to do it! Ask me why I know!

Don't want a drop head, only bought the Boxster because it was there in the Showroom at PCT! A Cayman would have been better.
The Toyota is on the list, sort of a Cayman but would need to check the luggage space as the Boxster is very useable for Euro tours.

I've had it with 'Porsche Boxster' issues that have threaded their way though my 10 years of the car as you well know.

I feel I need to step back a touch from all this, so have booked an hour with Zuffenhaus, my long standing Indie on the ramp to see if they spot anything.

At my request they have quoted to change both rear wheel bearings and the one drive shaft in that process. I think the job is a tough one as the rear of the car has never been disturbed from new except for the brakes which was easy a few years ago.
