VEMS Engine management systems, plug & play ECU upgrade

Did you use a new intake pipe or run through a gutted AFM. And did you use your Innovate O2 sensor in the end.
 
Used a straight pipe from ASH to replace the AFM for now - will remove the J-boot in due course and put a different air filter in the "traditional" MAF position.

The sensor with the Innovate kit is a Bosch LSU sensor exactly the same as the one Peep supplied. I only clocked that after I'd swapped them over otherwise I'd have left the old one in. Doesn't matter as I'm going to sell the innovate kit anyway so wanted it complete.

Is that an Innovate kit with the remote screen? I need a mobile Lambda kit for other cars running carburetted engines...
 
So, to continue with this thread and not hijack David's excellent VEM's install thread...

After getting the 3" exhaust including downpipe, welding the WB02 bung in place, welding the intake hard pipe bung for the AIT sensor, I was ready to install the kit supplied by Peep.
However, I wanted to carry out a few other mods, including oil catch tank, full silicone hose conversion and a new discreet air intake set-up similar to Pete's version. (see the post in 'what did you do today for a picture)
Those jobs done, installing VEMS was a doddle. It really is plug and play. David's write up says it all, save for my WB02 wiring runs through a robber grommet conveniently placed just below the standard ECU location, so no cables to run down the shift lever or transmission tunnel. I did have to cut and re-solder the wires to pass them through this hole though. 5 wires in all.
Calibrated the TPS (spot on to start with), calibrated the WB02, needed big adjustment, but this is normal my adjusted value was about 168 (units are not apparent, but this has nothing to do with lambda targets) So, now I'm ready to turn the key! Easy, started first time, ran reasonable smooth as it warmed up, then to get tuning.
So, I've hit a couple of issues with the tuning so far:
My lambda was off the scale to start with, but this was because it takes a minute or two for the sensor to kick-in. I've since corrected the value for a warm engine hitting about 0.93-0.95 lambda. Now I have a warm start issue which I need some assistance from Peep with to resolve.
As for tuning, I'm not yet able to get out on the road properly because I can't re-start the car, so I'll have to wait and see. A very short drive gave a pleasingly quick throttle response and smooth drive.
I guess it's worth mentioning my set-up:
The car is a standard 220 which initially had a boost enhancer and pro-max chip which gave a pleasing 258HP. I then carried out a full engine re-build, LR DPW fitted and a bigger LR61 turbo. This gave roughly 298HP on the same promax chip, but fueling was getting a bit lean, hence the desire for an aftermarket ECU. I'll update as progress with tuning continues.....
 
I've got a new LR61-10 in my garage, interesting to see how your setup will compare to David's. I'll guess you'll have 50 bhp more at 6k revs.
 
IMHO the LR61 is just perfect for our cars, lag is minimal even when not using a high duty cycle and I have never got to a stage where I've run out of boost. The LR61 can deliver over 650bhp at 1BAR so on our engines it has more than enough blow for peak RPM. Yes I know that there are newer quicker spool turbo's out there, I'm just saying that I have never found the LR61 wanting, it pins me to the back of my seat and I love it...:)

I went on a couple of Yankee forums quite a while ago and said I was thinking about fitting the LR61 on a 2.5 engine, most that replied said it was too big and it would be laggy....
 
think I saw that... what do they know?...didn't they also say that the 75 wouldn't fit which we know for a fact is BS....:)
 
Correction on my set-up. I thought I had the super 61 (or equivalent) LR turbo fitted, however having check with LR and my invoice it looks like I've got a super 53 equivalent. I fitted it way back in 2008!
So I won't be getting 400+rwhp, more likely around the 340rwhp area. Maybe a smidgen less lag though eh!
 
I will share something with you guys...now don't laugh but I think that the boost on the car is affecting my mental state, I'll explain... I keep having the same recurring dream, I'm always on a road with other cars present, nothing in particular, no particular model car nor road but these cars are there with me and going fast. Now in my dream, I floor it and the car hits max boost and takes off.....I mean literally, launches into the air like an aircraft and stays there until I back off....now what the hell is that all about?
I've lost count how many times that I've had this dream....perhaps I'm losing my mind...lol

So, an update on the VEMS install.
Finally sorted the idle and warm start issues, it was the wrong injector settings (standard, instead of the supplied 55lb injectors). This has sorted a lean mixture under acceleration as well.
Only problem now is, the software doesn't like my top of the range Surface Pro laptop so I can't 'tune' the car. Apparently VEMS doesn't like windows 10 at all, but Dave is having no issues running his through a bargain basement (no offence David) windows 10 Lenovo Miix310. I'm off down to PC world....
This faf is a little frustrating, but I guess I should be grateful, from others posts engine management can be a troublesome preoccupation and to be fare so far, apart from very minor issues (injector settings and laptop issues), it's been very straight forward.

Could be..I worked on HP 1.... don't think the flying anglia was in the first film though?...had great fun on that film.. part of the team that built Hogwarts which stood 30' tall and headed the build of privet's drive.. miniature of course.. there was a full-size street on the backdrop too.....fun days and before Daniel Radcliffe was a star.. just a young boy who shared breakfast with the rest of us mere mortals...:)
 
I pushed a friend with a bog standard '90 turbo to purchase a kit from Peep, which he eventually did last week and I am looking forward to installing it and tuning it for him.
I run a Vi-PEC ECU featuring most bells and whistles on my turbo, which I bought way before Peep marketed his VEMS kits, and I am curious to see how they will compare.

Interesting dream Pete. I don't think I have ever dreamed of our cars... I've been feeding wild fantasies over the Ferrari F12 lately which we could argue could be a scaled up version of our cars and dreamed about it last week, driving one with the most beautiful woman in the world sitting besides me. When I woke up, obviously in total disarray, I had no idea where I could have ever seen that girl before. I probably need a well-deserved Summer break.
 
Actually to say, I'm not familiar with car engine manage. The more that I know about car is how to choose a better charger when plan to start a road trip. Since I have used to charge camera battery in the travel process. The way for me to handle this tool is to connect with car cigarette lighter charger outlet. Last year, I bought a 400w DC 12v to AC 110v power inverter on bestekmall. Hope this point is useful to you. Warm regards.

CORRECTION on above again (I don't know what I'm doing it's clear :ROFLMAO:), the supplied injectors are 60lb or 630cc/min flow rate not 55lb injectors. This makes my fuel_req result in a value of 6.43 (calculation based on David's very helpful post)
 
SUCCESS!

So, further update - today I tried my wife's work laptop (a Lenovo Thinkpad x260, with Windows 10) with the VEMS and it worked a treat. So I could finally get out on the road and do some tuning. I started on the drive with a bit of tweaking because the cold start was a bit sluggish. As she warmed up she settled down to a slightly high idle, but again I'll tweak those settings eventually. I got out on the road and after 10mins driving the tuning looked like this:

I carried on driving on a nice quiet dual carriageway (no names!) and got to this point after another 10-15mins:

She's running pretty sweet now and I will change out the plugs now the tune is in the right ballpark (no more sooty plugs hopefully).

Next step will be the rolling road...
