I have just sat the car back on it's wheels for the first time since I refitted the engine. However the lowering springs I have fitted are going to give me clearance problems. I have 216/45/17 's on 7.5 inch wide 17 inch cup ones. What size tyres does everyone else use,I was thinking 225/40/17 or 205/40/17.

Thats seriously low what is the drop with those springs ? Im using 225 wide tyres on mine, but I reckon you might have some rubbing issues.
 
Mmmm i'd say can you turn the steering without the wheels rubbing on the inside of the wing/arch?
 
have you test driven it yet, does the suspension bottom out or rub in the top of the arch, also are you using standard shocks?
 
The car hasn't been driven for 5 years. I am in the process of rebuilding it.I know the wheels are dirty but they came from another car.
 
What clearance problems do you think you are going to come up against, do the tyres foul the springs ?
 
I am worried the tyres will rip the wing off when I am on a fast twisty road. So I wondered what size everyone else uses on lowered cars with 17 inch wheels. Here it is from a different angle.Excuse the fact that the car is half built and dirty.

that does look pretty low... I use 225/45/17 all round with no issues. that's with 8j et40 wheels. I don't think mine is quite as low - see the last page of my project thread for recent pics. race cars will run lower, with wider tyres, and they seem ok.
 
I haven't lowered my car but run 17" cup1s 9" rear and 7.5" fronts (I think or could be 8") with 225/45/17 fronts 255/40/17 rears.
 
Are the dampers/struts new or are they older and possibly allowing the car to sag a little? Combined with a shorter spring this may be sufficient to cause the problem that you have. I have a 1988 Turbo which uses a 7.5" front rim with a 225/45/17 tyre and it is definitely more than 30mm higher on standard struts.
 
Hi Colin My car is down about 60mm and I run 225's on 16" CS rims with no issues. Mine looks about as low as yours. I also have fresh GAZ gold and a stiffened ARB with the triangulation brackets and poly bushes. Stuart
 
It's got new standard struts and eibach springs. I think I will go back to standard springs or try a different brand of spring.I wanted it a bit lower but not as much as it is.I would say it's sitting very low even compared to yours Stuart and also Alan's which is on spax springs I think.
 
It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I don't think it looks too low. I would build everything back together then see. Might be ok after cleaning wheels. Lol. My front looked very low after fitting Design Tec -30 springs, but after rear was adjusted balanced out. Camber adjustment could also help, and even filling it with fuel. Not far away now, get it finished. Alan.
 
How much were the springs? you could really do with uprated shocks when lowering to match the damping rate against the stiffer springs.
 
I had techart Eibach springs on my car and they were ok with 225 tyres there are 2 diameters for different years though, are they sitting ok in the the platforms? I don't have a pic of mine on this computer and not sure I will be able to find one as it had ledas after and I may not be able to tell the difference. I think I set the ledas to the same height though - this pic i think is Leda

If you go too low you have to be carefull you dont have balljoint issues though.

My car is nearest the camera, I may have gone up a little bit on the ledas after Peter E had his ball joint fail Tony
