Tyre Size

I'm sure some have run tyres that are much wider without issue, whether this is ideal is another matter. If the fronts stay the same size you may induce understeer. 255 were the largest used by Porsche on these cars (968CS) what makes you think you need wider? Edd
 
Id be tempted to run 225/45 all around, rather than increase the rear width. Itll fit as I could easily fit spacers to my rears which are shod with 255/40/17s.
 
Edd, I dont really need wider but they need renewing and thought maybe a bit wider would " Look " a bit better thats all.....may just stick with 255's if thats the largest porsche used...cheers John Daly.
 
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me is it ok to run 265/40/17 tyres on my rear Cup 2 alloys and have no issues with fit / handling etc? I currently have 255's....Cheers

Admittedly I hadnt noticed/considered that, but I think that 2x225s is enough. Better to work the tyre than to be over-tyred, in my frequently controversial opinion. :eek:)

More important might be what type tyres (brand, model) you are fitting as many I feel have all the power and then fit cheaper tyres which may not be optimal and defeat the object somewhat. I know guys over at rennlist fit some massive wheels and tyres to their '44s. Must make for heavy unsprung weight and less than optimal handling. Depends what you want, looks or drivability? Edd
 
Thanks to everyone for suggestions. There were 2 brands that offered good quality and affordability, http://www.eiretyres.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl.......Falkens or the Hancooks. If I stick with 255's that will be even cheaper. The car has great drivability with my current 255's....would going to 265 at rear make any real difference to the ride?... Cheers John Daly.
 
there's a few mm more in diameter, so the back end would be ever so slightly higher. The tyre will probably be a little heavier but you're not going to notice. what size are the fronts? 225/45/17 are cheaper than 205/50/17's (just put a new set of 453's on my Boxster, 225F 255R) with 205 fronts you'd be promoting more understeer with 265 rears, so i wouldn't, but it's pretty marginal I'd have thought.
 
Yes...225/45/17 on the front. Ok, my mind is made up, leave well enough alone and stick with the 255's on the rear....thanks everyone for your advice...Cheers John Daly.
 
I had 275/40/17 R rated track tyres on the rear of my Turbo, they were the only things that would stop the rears spinning under full boost. I would imagine traction from your 2.8 Turbo would be a similar issue for you so I can understand wanting to go wider. Ride was unchanged, just a lot more grip.
 
I think if you concerned about traction you have take a close look at what tyres you are putting on there. Tyres size is one thing but I would suggest the type and manufacturer will make a significant difference. As good as the Falken tyres are, and they are very good for budget tyres, they are still that. I know premium tyres are expensive but you really do get what you pay for in my experience. If your pumping out 422hp as your name suggests I would have thought you will require all the help you can get putting power down and that starts with getting the best tyres you can afford. Then looking at what size will suit. I've used Bridgestone S02 which were very good and recommenced N3 tyres by Porsche for the 944, better than the Falken 452's. You may also want to look at something like the Yoko AD08's which are bridge between track day semi slick and ultra summer tyres. I suppose it depends on how much you use the car and whether the initial investment in tyres is worth the benefits you will undoubtably get. Edd
 
Edd, You are right, quality over quantity wins every time but my car gets used only 3 or 4 months of the summer every year so fitting real expensive tyres that might decay quicker than wear out, doesn't make financial sense to me. I'm not adverse to putting the best on my car's, even my 1975 Beetle has the best of Pirelli all round! As I stated to Paul(Diver944), my main concern fitting wider tyres would degrade ride quality in which Paul has confirmed didn't but improved traction with ride unchanged. I'm thinking off trying some 285/30/18 on my rears when I get the chance. These seem much cheaper as part worns over 255. With 30mm front roll bar and 18mm rear would this true blance out or increase understeer
