Turbo or S2

More power = S2.
But lots more power = Turbo.
Nevertheless, even as a tuned Turbo owner, I firmly believe that there is more to life than More Power, and a good S2 is a thing of joy, and even after 25 years can still run with a lot of current-day hot hatches. It's an easier car than a Turbo to drive quickly, especially on roads you don't know very well.
Grunt throughout the rev range S2, but you cannot really hike the 220 out of the box power, a 220 Turbo has loads of mid range grunt and can be tuned to spit a lot more out, both models are now deservedly rising in price so get in there !!
For out and out power a Turbo on boost is fun fun fun.
But a S2 is a excellent all round torquey animal in its own right.
Depending what you want to use the car for either weekend 2nd car or daily driver, I'd go with an S2 as a daily driver and Turbo as a bit of a weekend fun car.
This is obviously just my opinion, I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to shoot me down.

Balls out "Oh my giddy aunt" power......Turbo

I do appreciate both cars character, the smoth progressive delivery of the S2 to the lag/surge of the turbo but I do feel that the S2 by todays standards is slightly under powered ( hope I'm not offending anyone!)
and to spend lots of money tuning an S2 or even dare I say it buying a 968!! I would still not get near the potential of the Turbo.
I know it may sound as if all I want is power but its not, if that was the case I would go Impreza or Evo which are also very good cars but my aim is to turn a vary good and very under rated porsche into an even better one!!
cheers

Retro, Classic is massive right now and the right Porsche will hold if not make money.................................No Brainer !
Not having a pop just trying to bring you to your senses.
My senses are well intact thank you and after owning two 911's a 924 and a 944 I am well aware of cars with classic value !
All I am asking is the opinion of well versed people about a car/s I am thinking of buying and was only giving a comparison with cars that people power up to the hilt and, if I was soley after power these would be cars to be considered
Take the blinkers off have a beer and chill man!!

Its a mistake to underestimate Imprezas and Lancer Evos too. I expect that someone will mention Dave Malings and his selling an Impreza because a 944 was so much faster around the Nordschleife, but: i] even a UK model Turbo 2000 will show a clean pair of heels to a 951 down most back roads ii] pound for pound a modified Impreza is going to be faster than a 951 and finally iii] Dave is a tool - listening to him and Gary Kinghorn youd think that they invented the Nurburgring.
I second that ![
I have had a S2 for a day a few years ago and really enjoyed it thats what brought me to buying the 2.5 lux, I bought it as a cheap runabout with a years mot and tax and was smitten... not quite the same as the S2 I know but apart from the engine size and output everything else was spot on from the driving position to handling, build quality etc. etc.
So in a nut shell I would like more of the same.. and as you say I should and will have a go in a turbo before I make a decision.
I don't plan to have it as a dailly runner more for weekend fun and as hobby hopefully improving it. so it looks like it is pointing towards the turbo but who knows !!
So if anyone who has an late turbo or S2 in black, grey, silver, white,or red (in that order) with dark interior in top condition and thinking of selling in the new year please let me know I may be interested.
cheers.
Stevie.

So Turbo or S2 or whatever will depend on what you want from a car, if you only want HP then buy a Skyline if you want a different experience then buy a Porsche.

It's docile and feels a bit flat under 3000 revs but if you wind it up and drive it then it becomes a different beast and feels capable, safe but very fast.
I've had Audi RS4's as daily drivers and the Porsche is a much nicer car to drive quickly

In day to day driving or even on a track I doubt there is very little between the 220 turbo and the S2, but you gotta like the lure of the top of the range 944 250 turbo, with its bigger brakes, m030 stuff, air con, etc. Having said all that, its the original 220 with early offset I'd have, if just so it could wear some fuchs.[

Made me laugh, but what the hell are you talking about Simon? Who's Dave?[

The Turbo is a different beast, it's very quick but driving it quickly takes a lot more concentration. I've been bitten by the turbo spooling up and catching me out leading to a squeaky bum moment or two. It really is a slug of power and being honest I do miss the linear output of the NA cars. However, I've found that I've had to adjust my driving style and start to slowly find the limits again, when you get it right it's immensely satisfying though.
Boost is addictive though and I still smile when the turbo whooshes into life.
