turbo finally "finished" - but at a cost!

Good job - enjoy the car.
Get a PCGB valuation done and present it to your insurance company so you can have your insurance on an 'Agreed Value' basis.
That way if the unthinkable happens you won't be so much out of pocket.

Great story. Enjoy your car. I'm reminded of the fat lady singing...... On that point whats the sound system like? (not the exhaust tone)

Woohoo! So I'm not the only one who's gone overboard on spending to bring a car back up to scratch.

You already weren't. I've been through much the same over the last two and a half years and now have the car pretty much as I want it, though there is still the air con to go, and like Ewan I must get round to installing the replacement clock kit. The clock was working until it spent the best part of a year in the body shop, but there's always something...

I think including the purchase of the car I am now at somewhere around Focus RS money, but I didn't want a Focus RS, I wanted a 944T that was like new, and I'm now very close to that.

I really ought to write it all up at some point.

It comes to about £14,500.

Blimey [] and to think you turned down my 3.2 Turbo at £12000 (admittedly she looked decidely ropey after sitting in Jons yard for two years [:D] ).

It just goes to show that it's always cheaper in the long run to buy one that has already been sorted, but at least you have the satisfaction of knowing everything has been done that needs doing and it was to your own specification. Most of those jobs are once every decade so you shouldn't need to spend anymore any time soon, though you do seem to have had your fair share of cooling issues one after the other [&o]

I've just looked through my spreadsheet of work done on my S2 and the total cost comes to just over £16000 in 14 years and covers pretty much all of the things you've mentioned, some several times. I doubt very much it would sell for even a third of that, so many would argue it's throwing money away. I'd argue that the same £16000 could only put me in a very ordinary hatchback these days so it's money more than well spent. She still gives me just as much pleasure as when I first bought her back in '98.

Hang on to her for a long time Ewan and she'll pay you back in spades [:)]

Ewan,
hope all goes well with the car now, they do cost to keep in good fettle but they are a pleasure to run when like new. JMG are good at adding the extra touch which Porsche did not add for strategic reasons. Paul would know this better than me, those 3.2 litre engines are the finest 951 engines in the world IMO. I heard one running at JMG and it sounded really crisp, lovely.
I "met" my current 944t [:)] at JMG when I bought it from SPS, - like you I went the "pay to get it done for me" route and Simon's ball bearing 2.5 was too good for me to walk away from, its only Golf TDI money at the end of the day.
And today, a local 997 Carrera S learned a new respect for 1.2bar of boost flowing thru an SPS turbo on WOT.[;)]
good luck with yours

The sound system is of the period, so not special (although it is the factory uprated 10 speaker job). But i like the original look, so shall probably not change it. And given that it'll only do maybe 2 or 3 thousand miles a year, a properly good hi-fi would be a waste.

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement/understanding. It's good to hear that I am not the only one strange enough to want to spend good money on a 944.

Hopefully the sun will come out and I'll get to use her this summer - I'm keen to have some fun to justify this spend.

Talking of fun, I spent Thursday charging round Goodwood in my Maserati, but it was a very wet day. Tail wagging out of most corners. And when the second car of the day spun into the tyres at lunch I called it a day. But i couldn't help wondering how the 951 would have fared...

Finished ooooh a brave statement there , I doubt it will ever be 'finished' [;)]

" Finishing a 944 is like satisfying a woman ,
expensive to try impossible to achieve "

IIRC you don't have to take the round knobs off the heater panel.

or if you are over this way can probably fit it with you and chat 944s for half an hour.

This thread makes me glad/sad to hear I'm not alone.

George, Great to hear that SPS car is still treating you well. After many years of doing it the hard way I am beginning to realise that a man much wiser than myself would have done it your way. That car, re-built to practically new 'but better' by Simon was an excellent value for money purchase when you look at the long term view.

Nice one Ewan, great story! Well done for sticking with it, classic cars rock!! I agree with you in the statement you made about going to work to earn the money doing what you do so that you can pay a quality garage to do what they do. My sentiments entirely (although "Yobo" stands me in 30 grand to date)! My turbo is off to JMG on Saturday morning.....how i wish i hadn't read this thread...!!!!!!!!!

Well, this is the funny thing...i don't actually know as i write this! It has already had quite a few Jon Mitchel modifications done to it over the past couple of years (before i bought it). Jon and i just need to take stock of what's what and decide what we are going to do. If funds and my missus allow, possibly a 2.8 motor, roller bearing bigger turbo, remap etc, etc.
I'll let you know on Sunday after Le Mans has finished. I will be glued to the box for 24hrs as i can't go this year. Gutted.

Pete - having not seen G161 for a while I may pop down to JMG to see what you're doing to it. To go for a 2.8 with a bigger turbo will give you all the power you are realistically likely to need/use in a 944 whilst sticking within a "reasonable" budget.

But don't expect JMG to get it all right first time around - I have found that i have to go back to have jobs re-finished. Easy for me as I live in Dorset, but perhaps not so convenient for yourself. And if you are the type to get stressed about deadlines, either look elsewhere or expect your drinks cabinet to take a battering! (That said, and to be fair to Jon, things are much improved this year over last.)

Ok Ewan, It would be nice to meet you mate. I'm leaving Brighton really early (around 6am) to give myself plenty of time to find the place and have a quick bit of breakfast in a local cafe (I prefer Northern cafe's with tons of Black Pudding), then discussions with Jon on what to do with the car. Then it's on the train and back to Brighton before the start of Le Mans.
If your'e an early bird like me, i'll buy you breakie'!
