Turbo failed MOT today and i'm selling up

Today we went to start taking the alternator off to try and cure the 'engine wont stop fault' and on jacking up the car it was me that noticed corrosion around the front jacking points. I decided to hold on the work
( so as not to possibly waste a good friends time) and put her through an MOT on the grounds of , if there was any significant fail I wouldn't be up for carrying on sorting out the mass of more niggly faults with the car.

The car failed on corrosion around both jacking points , front brake balance and insufficient hand brake. I am suprised as my outer sills dont even have one bubble on them and are totally solid , i have also looked inside with a camera and found them to look good.

None of the faults are deal breakers really if it wasnt for the long snag list of other non failing faults like the sunroof and several electrical ancilleries like the seat but I am defintately calling it a day. I have other things going on in my life that I wont go in to but definately am not up for a car project.

The car is an 85 C reg 944 turbo with 199,000 miles , I did a 100 mile round trip today after the MOT fail , so she still goes no problem at all. I cant even feel the front brake problem but I am not doubting it is there. If its partially siesed its my fault as the car has sat in a garage since I bought here last Autumn.

I am inviting offers from anyone who would take her on but if no one offers me over 1500 I will put the car on flea-Bay in about ten days time and if no joy then break and scrap the car.

I prey someone wants what is basically a sound car with refurbed Deep Dish Tele Dials on for 1500 or over but no sentimental clap trap if no one does she is toast !

I'm afraid 944's and I are going to part company for the last time. The 100 mile dash in her today was a hoot but it
was I suspect my last 944 hoot.

I'm glad you are still enjoying the car !

Hmmm, I shall tell a friend of mine... Do you have any pics?
Hmmm, if I had a car less or two...

I could not sleep when I read that an early off-set turbo was at risk of becoming toast....

after a chat with Mas a deal was struck, and having been collected by Transporter, this project is en-route to its new home in Ireland.[:)]

I have not seen it yet obviously, but I am comfortable with the very frank description I received, and from a forum user...there was no sales patter, it is what it is.[&:]

My first 951 was an early offset car, and maybe its just rose tints, but I often think back to a softer sprung car which was easy to live with and I intend to put this one back to very tidy original spec (apart from maybe an extra few totally discrete horses) [;)]

are these cars a recognised disease?

more later

Mas, thanks for a straightforward transaction. George

Glad to hear that the car has gone to a good owner who will cherish it and hopefully keep it running !

I really think its a shame that so many of these beautiful cars end up in the scrapyard.

Yours

Chris

Ditto, there are only 300 944 Turbos left in the UK according to howmanyleft, ten years hence I think people will be kicking themselves for scrapping them, the point where they are viable to save is now creeping up, MK1 Escorts get resurrected from what is basically a box of dust yet pwople are scrapping 944's because they need some welding, I can see why Mas would have had enough, they talk of "Mojo" on Retro Rides which basically translates as enthusiasm and you only have so much of it, life, money, the weather, time, more prolems etc all conspire to get in the way and sap your Mojo and sometimes you wonder why you bother, I spent five hours on mine yesterday and then it failed to start as I had left the ignition on with the radio, fan etc all going, was knackered and filthy so just walked away and came back after a brew and jump started it, then realised I had fitted the ABS sensor where the brake pad sensor should go and vice versa.

944 numbers must be dwindling at the rate of a couple a week at the moment, in 2008 there were 4700 licensed and now there are 3600, some will be sorned but a lot will now be gone, it isnt a Panda but seems a shame for so many to be being scrapped.
