Trickle charger for 718

...which version of ctek charger the MXS 3.8, MXS 5.0....or the CT5 Start/Stop one?

I have a similar set up to Ralphs although I do not use that much cable. I take my connector to the rear of the batter, up and onto the tray with just about 10cm cable/connector laying on the tray top.

If I knew how to post photo's I would but I cannot.

do you connect to both battery posts or do you connect to the positive and an earth point for the negative?

I have a permanently wired connection on my Vx220 and just plug in as you do. Probably need a charger for the 718. I do have an Optimate are they any good?

Paul,

I connect to the batteries positive terminal and to earth on the nearside suspension strut mount. I use a Ctek but I do use an Optimate on my Boxster. The Ctek is more flexible in its charging modes (AGM stop/start battery function).

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are designed specifically for larger, more demanding stop-start vehicles that use additional technologies designed to reduce fuel consumption. ... AGM batteries can be fitted to all stop-start vehicles but must be replaced 'like for like' where an AGM battery was originally fitted.

Thanks Ray - which version ctek are you using please? My 718 has start / stop so keen to ensure that I have the right charger for the battery

Ctek MXS 5.0. My other is an Optimate 2. I do have a third which is a heavy duty charger for my twin battery Pajero SWB.

Ralph if memory serves me right has an all singing Ctek charger but the MXS 5.0 does ok for my needs.

Sadly my vehicle only does mostly short runs nowadays and to keep the battery up to spec I connect mine every night. The battery take a beating in the winter especially with the heater, demister etc going.

Although mine is only just over a year, it’s only done 2k miles.....so unless it gets a good run, start/stop doesn’t kick in.....it is garaged but I know that one day it will probably decide it isn’t keen on starting....

The battery has to be fully charged for the stop/start function to operate. Also other criteria come into play before it's operational.

I guess you found out Ray? Just in case, click on the pic and you get a choice of links to use. For the PCGB forum I usually use the 'direct link' and paste it into the pop up box that appears when you choose the picture icon to link a photo.

More by good luck rather than good judgement on my behalf. I shall try your method but when it comes to photo transfers etc I am not the sharpest knife out of the draw. Thanks for the info.

What I did was, right click the image and pasted Copy Image Location from the drop down box into the clubs URL box.

I have worked out your method. I was unsure what all the options were for down the right hand side of the selected photo. I still dont know what they all do but I do know that clicking copy on the Direct Link does the job. Thanks.

Ok...got mine and set it up this evening. Used the positive terminal and the battery clamp nut and bolt at the front of the battery. Lead comes out in the middle under the bonnet below the windscreen.

So...charging...if I open the bonnet.....the front storage area light comes on.....does it ever go off either after time or can it be switched off Or do I just lock the car and it goes off then....? Many thanks Paul

Nobody knows but a willing small child or movie camera in the frunk will confirm one way or the other. It’s a bit like the fridge light. []

I am hoping you close the bonnet? If not, close the bonnet and lock the car. Although you can try Ralphs idea. Personally I wouldn't try it myself as her indoors would probably not unlock for me.

Couple of questions regarding charging my 718 Cayman

1 My Ctek MXS 5.0 seems to make a buzzing noise. My old one which doesn’t have the AGM mode does not buzz. Should I be concerned.

2. I believe the battery is an AGM battery, it’s a banner 80Ah 800CCA battery. Should it be charged using AGM mode? I know standard car mode uses a slightly lower voltage 14.4 vs 14.7.

what are most people doing?

AGM batteries should be conditioned using AGM charging.

No idea about buzzing.

Do you simply attach the CTEK leads to the negative post and positive terminal using the supplied leads, not sure if vibration would dislodge them whilst driving ?
