Torque Tube

Hello,

I just bought a torque tube to recondition (bearings, etc). However, when I spin the shaft up using a cordless drill at the gearbox end, I think I can see some movement / run out at the pilot bearing end. Its slight, but it looks like it isn't turning perfectly straight and true.

The original bearings still run smoothly, with no obvious play as far as I can tell. I am wondering if the shaft got damaged during transit.

Its the first time I have looked a torque tube so not entirely sure what is typical. I am assuming if it isn't running perfectly true, there will be vibration or the pilot bearing will be destroyed?

Is there a spec for this?
Or is this thing scrap???

Many thanks,

David

There isn't anything about specifications in the Porsche 944 Workshop Manual (might be in the 924 one but I don't have that), presumably as it wasn't considered a serviceable part. I'd recommend speaking to Augment Automotive as they have reconditioned many torque tubes and helped me complete mine a couple of years ago (I couldn't get the shaft to go back in after fitting the new bearings).

They have a custom-made piece of apparatus to remove the shaft and refit with new bearings.

I got my bearings from here as they were the same rating as the ones I removed (C4).

Many thanks for that. The guys at Augment are looking into it for me. Worst case, if the shaft was damaged in transit, they have them in stock.

The torque tube I have is from an 88 Silver Rose Turbo. Fingers crossed I did my homework correctly and it is compatible with my 1989 2.7!
