thinking of buying a 944

I love this forum where else can you learn about Galvanic corrosion and go so far off topic. Now I had Sushi for my tea, what do you think about it?

I'd leave it where it is . It is pertinent to the thread. Money-bolts-rust etc.

I would say thats too much to pay for a 20 year old car unless its in exceptional condition. Its likely there is rust in the sills for a start which is going to cost a small fortune to put right when the next MOT is due.
belts and water pump etc can gobble up money (£4 figures )

If the gearbox or clutch or engine packs you might as well scrap the car because of the costs involved.

Plenty of tidy 944 out there at £1500 and aim to spend a further £1500 and you'll have a nice basically sound classic supercar for shirt buttons. but you'll still need to budget ongoing repairs every year
 
What's your budget?

What are your priorities.. Cheaper to maintain? Possible to 'mod' to increase performance?

They are all great cars. Don't forget also the late 2.7 lux. Also there is a distinction between the square dash (up to mid 85) and oval dash (post mid 85) cars.
 
As Rob says it depends what you want. All great cars just buy best you can of whichever model aat the money you have.For me it would be an S2 all the way.But I would love an early car and a late Turbo as well.

Far more detail needed. It's like asking "I'd like to buy an Escort"; we might recommend a MK1 RS1800 but you really want an XR3. [&:]

Budget, what use it'll get, whether you work on it yourself, want to modify it, all important things to consider.
 
We S2 owners like ours best of course as only the 89-91 250HP turbos are "better"....

All kidding aside - like others here have said - it depends on your priorities. Brake and suspension parts are a little cheaper for earlier cars but otherwise pretty comparable. Key point is buy the best one that fits your budget and enjoy it.
 
Of course everyone really wants a convertible, can't be beaten for real driving enjoyment - lets just see who enjoys the Lake District trip in September the most!

...............Well that's jinxed the weather at least.
 
I am sure we can all agree that whatever your budget, a 944S (16 Ventilier) is not "best".

(I've had lots of 944's, but only one 944S. With good reason!)

I don't really know anything about those - except I don't think there's anyone on this forum who as one, were they really that bad?
 
There was a guy a few months back who was building a track car from an S.
I would say S2 is the best allrounder with a 250 bhp Turbo coming in a close second (only if you want to modify it of course)
 
There's nothing that wrong with an S
It's just that you get all of the potential
issues common with the 16v engines
without the advantages gained from
having the S2, such as good torque,
turbo brakes, turbo front end, etc.
The S produces more power that the lux
it's just a bit peaky.

My advice is to set a budget and just look for the best car available in that budget, that's what I did , I test drove 4 different models and picked the one that had been maintained and drve the best
 
Yeah, it really repends on what you're looking for.

My priority was to get a classic car that 'felt' like a classic. That meant it had to be an early (pre 1985.5 - square dash) car...which also limited my choices to the Lux. The car I've got is perfect for me. It might be the slowest, and possibly least desirable, but I love it because it feels like its from another time and has a rawness that the later cars simply don't have (apparently...Rob Wright still hasn't let me drive his turbo to compare [;)]).

If your priority is speed, then you need to look more at the later Turbos and the S2.
