thinking of buying a 944

Having has a 16v S, I concur with the general opinion above - it was pants, useless below about 4k revs and a complete PITA, could not get rid of it quickly enough. My 2.5 lux was better.

However, no-one has mentioned the very best 944 - the S3, AKA 968. All the lessons learnt on the various 944's were put together in the 968, it was the last of the front engined breed, and in this case last is definitely best!

If your priority is glacial speed, then you need to look no further than the S2.

haha, you guys crack me up[:D]

Unfortunately I can't play the 'my car is faster than yours' game. At least I know I've got the fastest colour. [:)]

I'd agree that the 968 has the better engine, just, and a few other improvements, but I would say the 944 S2 is better value than a 968 with arguably the same performance. 968 def looks more modern with 993 front end but 944 has more aggressive road stance. Depends on how much you have to spend and what you like the look of....

Yeah, it really repends on what you're looking for.

My priority was to get a classic car that 'felt' like a classic. That meant it had to be an early (pre 1985.5 - square dash) car...which also limited my choices to the Lux. The car I've got is perfect for me. It might be the slowest, and possibly least desirable, but I love it because it feels like its from another time and has a rawness that the later cars simply don't have (apparently...Rob Wright still hasn't let me drive his turbo to compare [;)]).

If your priority is speed, then you need to look more at the later Turbos and the S2.

Your time may come soon young padawan learner [;)]

i see the point of everyone saying be specific but im askin opinions as ive never owned one i have driven a 2.5 lux which was ok felt pretty slow to me i just had a look at a ventiler and it was ok but did not seem to run good under 4k revs was lumpy and stuttered im a mechanic so any mechanical issues are easy enough to sort i do like turbo cars from previous cars as for budget its up to 6k so most models are avail in the price range but im not going to spend it all if i dont have to cheers john

Hi John

I hope you're not offended by our banter - you may see also that we have a tendency to take threads off topic a bit, but only for humorous gain! [:D]

However, I can say from my limited experience (12 months) of 944's that it is a fair question to ask to be more specific as the different models do feel almost like different cars. I purchased an S2 about 12 months ago - it was a known car to the club and a real stunner. I couldn't fault the car, it handled well, was quick and felt like a modern car. However, therein laid the problem. I was after a classic feeling car, and whilst the S2 was lovely and would have been a cracking daily driver, it didn't get my pulse racing.

I sold it and last April bought my early, square dash 1983 944. This feels like a classic car to me, much more raw, no power steering and I don't have to be going fast in it to feel exhilarated. I do still have a hankering for a turbo though. My local pal, Rob Wright on here has one and I love the kick in the back - it's soooo fast. I keep looking on inet at them but as soon as I get back in mine I soon forget about a turbo.

Best thing, test drive a few, come to the Rutland meet on 4th March and see where you passion lies

Hope that helps?

Regards
Andy

I think alot depends on your use of the car, will it be a weekend warrior or daily driver? Going to track the car? As a all-rounder I think the S2 is the best, arguably more reliable and easier to drive and maintain than a Turbo. But the later turbo's perhaps being little more special and certainly easier (with sufficient funds) to get some impressive power mods from, making for a very fast car even by today's standards.

The lux is probably the best value 944 and less prone to rust issues found on some later cars, although age and mileage may also play a part. The 2.7 is often overlooked but may provide a good compromise between power and lightness of the early cars.
