Swapping exhaust...

When changing primary and secondary silencers, is it necessary to remove the centre and corner section(s) of the rear PU?

No, and I would suggest you didn't - thats quite involved. Plus it doesnt buy you much in terms of room. Doing it on a ramp makes a huge difference!

Rich

Hugh is spot on. It's not a difficult job but a ramp makes it a lot easier. Also, don't drop the olives as they don't bounce!!!!

Why the change?

I'm thinking of possibly putting the original exhaust back on. Are the olives re-useable (assuming they are okay) or do I need to buy new ones?

In answer to yer Q Rich, nope!! U really need another pair of hands to help on this, (I used a trolley jack!) but as a polisher you'd know that....[;)]

Rich

Yes they are. A friend to hold the exhaust in position would be very useful. Put the final silencer on first and then the silencer which will replace your Cup pipe. When everything is in place, secure it and make sure it sits correctly using the support straps (which I assume you still have?), which fit around the main silencer i.e. not the final silencer!!!

Yep, got everything I need, except a friend! []

Oh, and I haven't got an original 964 tailpipe. Anyone got a spare kicking around? [:D]

I'll also need to replace the left hand bumper corner with the original with no cut-out.

I guess that means removing the rear PU after-all, unless it can be changed as a separate piece with everything still in situ?

Rich

The bumper part you need can still be purchased from Porsche for about £300 including the VAT (but you may be able to get some discount on that price). To remove the old bumper part and replace it with the new part you'll need to remove the whole bumper. You'll probably also need a new internal heat shield.

Yes, but you don´t have to polish the bumper´s inside. Although you can, of course.

I've got the original bumper corner.

Martin, I'll check out my heat shields, but please email me with details. Many thanks.

Thats a shame in some respects Rich..I would keep it as it is,,that is great feature of that particular car, it sounds good, goes well and spits flame out the back when you back off the throttle (seen on track, doubt this happens much in your garage?).

I would assemble all the parts for conversion so that when you sell it as a concours car, the new owner can convert it back if they wish...unless you are selling yourself soon?

Rich,
if you are planning on doing the work this weekend I may be able to drop by and provide the extra hands??

martin

Paul - there's a reason I need to switch back to original, even if just as a temporary 'quietening down' for a day in late June. [;)] I too love the sound and the flames and popping - but where I hope to be taking it won't. [;)][;)]

Martin - thanks for the offer of help. I won't be doing the exhaust this weekend but might take you up on the offer of an extra pair of hands when I do get round to it. I'll make sure the kettle's on and we have plenty of biscuits (or cold beer).

First job to do is a replacement of most brake components as per the other thread... [:)]

Sounds like venturing on track!

Tragically, needs must. Mines sound lovely with the cup pipe, but useless on trackdays, now a fair bit heavier and stifled in the sound dept.

Curious, there are no PCGB track days listed for late June and why would you fit new brakes before, when you know you are going to kill 'em !

Rich, be careful, for some unknown reason that car has tended to end up facing the way it came when it gets near a track.
