Stereo Recommendations

Beckers are great in both terms of quality and appearance if you can find one. I have a Grand Prix and its fab !

Seriously Andy if you want the best sound quality then check this site out http://www.nakamichi.com/home.html you will not get better quality sound this side of a linn system.
Erm ... Nakamichi may well produce units which provide excellent quality source signal, but this is only good if the rest of your system is up to the same quality. Any sound system is only as good as it's weakest link, and the weakest link in most car radios is their amplifier. If you are after better sound quality from your stereo then buy a small amplifier and put that in the system; it will make far more difference (and cost far, far less) than a fancy-dancy head unit. Next step would be to spend some pennies on some capacitors to build some filters for the speakers to ensure they are only fed frequencies they can handle. Oh, and put some sound-proofing in the doors, and reinforce the speaker mounts to provide an enclosed baffle behind. Next step would probably be some better speakers. Then, and only then, will you start to really experience the benefits of a very high-quality signal such as that from a Nakamichi head unit - which would be your next purchase after the speakers.

Of course, if you are looking for other features (Bluetooth, iPod integration, DAB radio and so on) or aesthetic pleasingness then you may choose differently.

I'm afraid you need to keep checking ebay.Or you could try going direct.Fair point that Oli raised and he's right about the speakers and amp as well.lol

Nothing too fancy but something like this might be nice.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Porsche-Radio-CDR-23-986-Boxster-996-911-CDR23-/190696078558?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c665f3cde

Its from a boxster and says Porsche on the screen when you turn on.

Theyre Becker, but I believe that the radio is paired with the cars ECU, so it probably wont work.

I dont think the first gen boxster headunits are..

Pinouts here, nothing goes to the ecu.

I cant be certain, although Ive just looked at the link and the vendor has stated: "Good Working Order, No code required with this one because it links into the cars ECU so it may require programming".

You could be right - I've just seen this one which says.. 'has had the MOST disabled so that it needs no code and will work in any vehicle via a standard DIN connector'

Trouble with more modern factory stuff is that it works on can bus and therefore wont work in our old-fashioned cars.

Yes your right, apart from the last link I posted.. It's had the canbus system disabled so will work on any car.

Whilst I don't want any crap in my car as I appreciated decent sound, I'm not looking for a full-on ICE install, as my head unit has no MP3 compatibility for my iPod this is what I need - plus if I'm buying something new it seemed to make sense to consider something with blue-tooth too so I can make hands-free calls through it too

This is a list of functionality requirements rather than quality, and hence all you need to do is replace the existing head unit with something that does all these things.

You could do worse than go into your local Halfords and get a feel for what is available and how much it costs. You may be able to buy cheaper elsewhere so don't take your wallet with you, but it will give you an idea of what there is out there.

www.caraudiodirect.co.uk is a very good on-line car stereo store.
