Starter Motor

Peter,

Have you thought about having it refurbished?

Plenty of companies specialise in this work. Normally less than £100, new bearings, brushes and a clean up.

i am sure i have a used one if you need one

give me a call and i will have a look for you

cheers

If not - 2nd question, does anyone know what the part number is? I've narrowed it down to either 951 604 101 or 102 and think it is the latter version of the two but not sure. With the part still on the car it's not easy to check!

I'm surprised it is a 951 part number as the S2 is 3 ltr NA engine rather than the 2.5 turbo. At any rate, my PET shows both numbers with the 101 being a 1.4 KW starter and the 102 being a 1.7 KW "stronger" starter available as option code M198 and described as "starter, 1.7 KW". I imagine this was offered to customers in northern climates who might need some extra oomph for cold weather use.

Looks like the only difference will be price.....

I've got a two month old one from an 8V I just scrapped, it still has all it's stickers and labels on it. Apparently the chap spent £200 on it then the car failed on rust!!
Doh!
Not sure if it's the same?
Cheers
Tim

Dear All,

Thanks for all your comments and after giving the matter some consideration, together with the fact that time is against me, have decided to try local specialist to get it sorted.

It's the 1st time I've used them as only got car in March but as is only a small job will give me a taster as to what they are like.

Thanks again to all those who responded.

depends upon the starter motor on the 924S - I believe it needs to be a "narrow body" to fit on a Turbo or S2... there are thin and fat bodied starter motors.

Ok - Thats something I can check easily....The 924S is a 1986 whilst the 944 turbo is an 1989 model....Cheers

951 needs a narrow style starter. If you use fat style one, you must remove 951 starter heat shield. None of the 8V starters will work with S2 or S.

I cant be bothered to go into a long diatribe, but just open type 911 website and open the pdf pet file. If you look up 924s one option it gives is an identical part number to the 1.4kw starter on 89-91 944s which will be the S2/turbo range so to say difinitively that an 8v starter motor will not fit is misleading. For me my starter for the 944T was available off the shelf from Eurocar parts so I really don't understand the tide me over mentality; you have to take the old one off anyway so why not go the extra step and put a recon unit on instead of a used motor.

In my experience (89 S" Cab) it is a it of a minefield!
OK thin & fat no prob, but solenoids differ too & leads don't reach!
I had mine rebuilt with 12 month gtee for ~ £80. See earlier post

Ok - I can say for certain it does fit and works as I 've just swapped them over. I can continue to use and enjoy my 944 turbo without any down time whilst I source a new or recon one. Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated...Cheers

924S starter will work with 951, but you must remove heatshield. I suppose that's not a good idea. 951 starter works great on all 944 models, even all 924 models. I installed years ago 951 starter to 924 Turbo.

If some website mention S2/Turbo range starter, that's a big mistake. S2 starter is totally different. Main shaft is longer than it is on 8V versions. Longeg shaft was needed because flywheel arrangement differs from 8V version. All 16V versions (S,S2 & 968) use newer style Motronic with 60-2 style ignition trigger on flywheel.

Olli - The heatshield fits straightback on the starter from the 924s....They are identical starters and solenoids....The S2 starter may well be different as I've not seen one but the Turbo is the same as 924s.....Cheers
