If not - 2nd question, does anyone know what the part number is? I've narrowed it down to either 951 604 101 or 102 and think it is the latter version of the two but not sure. With the part still on the car it's not easy to check!
I'm surprised it is a 951 part number as the S2 is 3 ltr NA engine rather than the 2.5 turbo. At any rate, my PET shows both numbers with the 101 being a 1.4 KW starter and the 102 being a 1.7 KW "stronger" starter available as option code M198 and described as "starter, 1.7 KW". I imagine this was offered to customers in northern climates who might need some extra oomph for cold weather use.
Looks like the only difference will be price.....

Thanks for all your comments and after giving the matter some consideration, together with the fact that time is against me, have decided to try local specialist to get it sorted.
It's the 1st time I've used them as only got car in March but as is only a small job will give me a taster as to what they are like.
Thanks again to all those who responded.

If some website mention S2/Turbo range starter, that's a big mistake. S2 starter is totally different. Main shaft is longer than it is on 8V versions. Longeg shaft was needed because flywheel arrangement differs from 8V version. All 16V versions (S,S2 & 968) use newer style Motronic with 60-2 style ignition trigger on flywheel.
