Silverstone track evening 2012

Assuming my car is running well (I'm collecting it from the garage in the morning) then I am planning to head over in the afternoon and see if I can get some track time as and when people fall out during the day sessions, I too am far too noisy to get on in the evening and too poor to do the whole day [:)]

So it sounds like there will be none of us running in the evening [:(], which is a real shame as we've had some great times at previous years, always followed by a well deserved pub lunch afterwards [:D]

There is no charge to get in to have a wander around, and the pits are completely open (but not to under 16 year olds I think, in case you want to bring any family).

It's not the car he has to keep up with, it's all about who is pedalling it [;)]

I still remember the first trackday I did after encouragement from you and Pete Crosthwaite at Donington about 12 years ago. I kept being overtaken and lapped by a group of 6 MX5's

That's exactly what I was going to say!
I'll get my excuses out of the way first, it's got an old and ailing engine, erm, it hasn't been driven on track in a year, erm, I'm rusty, erm, and I'm nowhere near as quick a driver as you!

As usual, Mondays are out for me. Hope there's an evening later in the year that I can make, I do like to wind the staff in the Green Man up. [:D]

It's the only one I'm afraid Paul, we've obviously all been naughty noisy boys at the previous ones so they've taken our toy away [:(]

If there are still spaces (I haven't booked, pending how my car runs tomorrow) then there's the Donington evening as an alternative, but the Green Man is a bit too far away for a meal. Have you considered phoning them up rather than visiting? [:D]

Shame to read the engine is down on power and needs a rebuild [:(]

Are you going to go for a full rebuild with lower compression to suit the supercharger better £££££££ [] or how about dropping in another S/H S2 engine which would be cheaper and quicker?

Hi Paul,
I'm still keen to continue the higher boost and lower compression engine build but I don't have the money for that at the moment and probably wont for another year or two, so I think I will be looking for a temporary solution if I want to get out on track next year.

It still drives and is rapid compared to the 944S so I can still enjoy it for the time being on the road, but I think another trackday might be pushing my luck in its current state (it's down on compression on one cylinder, leaks like a sieve, used a litre of oil in 20 mins (it actually dropped far too low on the first run) and was almost 10mph down at the end of the Hanger Straight). I do need to sort out the short shift kit before I can use it again, it hasn't aged well and is constantly coming loose, so that needs some attention.

The list of problems with the 944S is getting rather long too, remind me again why we bother with such old and recalcitrant cars? [;)]

Peter,

Sorry to hear about your woes. What do you suspect has happened? Broken rings or a cylinder head/valve issue?

I'm running a similar supercharged setup, so this is of interest to me.

Eric

Oh don't worry, the engine was knackered before I stuffed a load of air up it, I think the rings or bores are shot (it had very low oil pressure when it was hot), but I decided to supercharge it as if I grenaded it I wouldn't have been too upset. As it is it's survived a couple of very lean periods when it got really wet (I think the maf was saturated in oil and the moisture made it go 'a bit mad') and has outlasted my expectations all round, so I have no regrets or concerns about the SC setup at all.
