Silverstone track evening 2012

Will this be local authority stipulated? I wonder because if not, then its usual to give rear engined cars and aircooled cars some lattitude, as theyre both at a significant disadvantage in a static noise test.

Local authority types seldom grasp this, understand or care...

The poor lambs, unknowingly buying houses within earshot of one of the most established racing circuits in the country (which used to be a bomber base ffs).

No. Even if Ive got my leaking seal repaired by then, my suspension is still more tired than a postman on Giro day! [:D]

Bother, I think I'm probably a bit borderline. I will have to measure the car over the weekend and see. If I remember correctly it's normally done at 3/4rpm, with meter at 45 degrees and 1m from the exhaust, does that sound about right?

Yes. You set your own maximum revs though - do you have a separate rev limiter? Redline the car as 5,000rpm as it has a supercharger, more isnt required...

Not with a centrifugal SC, boost is proportional with revs, so it'd not be much fun to lose a big chunk of my power band (unless I fitted a different pulley and remapped it accordingly).

Sorry for not being clear Pete. Theyre usually set at 1/4 revs, so you enter setup and rev to 1,250rpm and the limit is now set at 5,000rpm.

They can rev it all they like but it wont rev over 5k, and by their own rules the test will now take place at 3,750rpm*. [:D]

*5k is probably too low to be accepted, but you can use a variable limit to manipulate the test and the few hundred revs that you cut off can make all the difference.

Cheers Simon. I suppose I could change maps over between static and running, that would be one way but I seem to recall they have a few mic positions around the track so chances are I'd get caught out anyway and it's quite a lot of money to risk wasting for me at the moment.

I've asked Melindi for clarification on the way the Silverstone static measurements are done, just in case, as there does seem to be a little variation between circuits.

even Silverstone. Who'd've thunk it..[] An 8000 rpm limit for F1 must be just around the corner. Or Diesel..

Diesel f1 car? Wouldnt suprise me. I couldn't get over the lack of noise from the Le Mans diesels, they sound like a hoover with a silencer. If my mapping goes well on the 9th I should be there

Melindi has just confirmed that they measure it at 0.5m from the exhaust tip, 45 degrees and at 3/4 revs. Hmmm, I've got a bit of a sinking feeling about this!

[:(] Well I'm definitely out, tested it today and I'm way over. I'll still be going along to spectate if any 944s are going. Bit gutted, but hey ho, serves me right for being a noisy blighter!

I'm happy again! [:D]

Melindi has very kindly put me on the reserve list for the day sessions at Silverstone, so hopefully I might get a few laps at the end of the day before the evening session starts, which would be perfect for me - not too hard on the car or wallet. I'll be the one wandering round the paddock sabotaging cars at about 4pm... I will stay around for the evening if there are many 944s about and perhaps try to get the odd passenger lap if there's a spare seat (or some photos if not, but I'm not very good at that!).

Those Donington evenings look great Ed, I've not been there for years. I can definitely do August the 13th as Mondays are perfect for me. [:D] Can't wait!

Before then I'll need an MOT (oh dear!) and a firm who will reinsure the car at a reasonable price (this years quote has risen quite a lot).

Given it's only a few days away, is anyone planning on doing the evening this coming Monday? The weather forecast looks pretty good too.

Hi Peter,

I don't have car quiet enough to play, but might come and hang out.

I presume you are in a garage?

If theres a few 944'ers about I might come along. I will bring the DME project Lux if people want to have a look. Is it free to spectate? Can we stroll round the garages?

Hi Peter,

I will be there in a BMW 330i M-Sport. [:)]

Andrew
