Saratoga Sunroof - Bulk-Buy

Regarding lubricating the seals, Waylander is correct about GummiPflege, I've used it for quite a few years now for all the seals on both my cars - and as you can imagine, there are plenty on a 968 cab! Micks Garage on eBay is the place, it's normally far cheaper per tube to buy 2 rather than 1 on his listings. I use it on any rubber seal - boot lid, under bonnet, all round the doors, anywhere rubber on the cab roof, makes a big difference. Do mine at least twice a year, if not 3-4 times per year if I'm parked up for an hour waiting for her ladyship!

GummiPflege on its way. Still not entirely sure about adjusting the clips, there doesn't appear to be anything threaded just a couple of spring washers to create the tension. If you rotate the clips the whole mushroom piece moves on both sides. I'll see how tight a fit it is.

Well it's on and all seems well.

Seals are gummied, as is the rest of the car now.

Only minor issue was when the arms wouldn't move to relocate in the roof . As it's been inoperative for so long I was worried the same fault had reoccurred but on replacing the original roof all was well. It tuns out the central arm of the new roof doesn't always make a good contact with the central microswitch. Its all a bit heath robinson to be honest anyway.

Seals are ok. A couple of spots on the passenger side didn't sit in quite as well as the rest but they seem to be settling down.

A watering can's worth of water on the roof seems to show watertightness has been maintained and hopefully the first contact with proper rain will substantiate this.

The front clips were a snug fit but by pressing down on the outside of the roof they could be closed without too much issue.

Opening and closing seems fine. Just a road test tomorrow morning to work.

Just logged on for the first time in ages (had a baby so car largely neglected) and amazed to see people still talking about those damned Saratoga sun roofs!

I'm glad people are using them. Mine was used for about 6 months and then went back in the box and has stayed there ever since. I loved the airyness in the car but at higher speeds it sounds like it's about to fly off the car! I can probably adjust the catches but don't have the time. Did anyone else have the same problem?

I must confess, having started the Saratoga roof thing I do feel guilty that so many people have had trouble with them. 😞

You know me so well, yes needed half a turn here ant there, the NS front corner would start making a lot of wind noise just sub ballistic, so it needed a tweak

I could shut it up quite easily just by pulling downwards on the front clip that side, so it got adjusted, don't think I could give the roof up now it's brilliant

I've not driven mine all that much (owing to, it turns out, needing a new clutch - not best pleased) but it seems watertight and fairly sound proof.

I admit I couldn't work out how to adjust the front clips; I saw the images where the clip had broken so there is clearly a thread into the part that sits on top of the roof panel but with the pressure I was prepared to use nothing was moving and I still removed some of the paint.

I found I could latch both sides by leaning quite hard on the top of the roof so I stopped trying to adjust the clips. It opens and closes fine. Actually it doesn't because the strip that contacts the central microswitch isn't curved enough so doesn't activate the switch without help. Interesting doing 2 things at the same time whilst one the move when one of them isn't steering.

Anyway when it comes back after costing me a fortune I'll play a bit more. Only 50k from clutch although over several years. Last one I (had)changed had done 140k. No idea why this had died.

Sounds like a couple of folk need a trip to near J26 M25!![:D] Better be quick, as he's recently been threatening to defect from 968 to Cayman, and his wife has already "defected" to an SLK320 R170 (similar to what I may have to do, except I want an R171 with a few additional toys!!).

UPDATE

I have been told by a member on another forum that they are making another run of Saratoga roofs and have been for most of 2019,

so anyone with a breakage or wants new on should get in touch with pilkington ASAP

Hi Martin. That’s good to know. I ordered one last time but was returned it due to an issue and then dropped out.

I am tempted to treat myself, do you know if they have addressed any of the issues, what is the price and do we just contact the same guy (think his name was Nick?).

Would you recommend getting one, even if the quality is as before?

Cheers,

Jamie

Jamie

there was nothing really wrong with mine, except the seal was loose, but of jelly tape fixed that, at the current time I think they are only available in the USA, but nick arranged for them to be shipped

I would never give mine up now it’s just brilliant

Cheers Martin. I’ll find a previous email from Nick and reply to that. Should be getting mine back from head gasket replacement soon

Not sure he would order just one, maybe Tom needs another group buy

Happy to help out again if anybody wants me to. Having a Saratoga on a 944/968 is something every owner should experience!

Jamie, Tom, If there is any sort of group buy or order being placed, then I'm in for one please. Had a look on the Pilkington website and thought about contacting them direct, but if someone has the contacts and relationship for shipping then so much the better.

The reltionship is there, I always got on well with Nick at Pilkington. The problem, as is so often the case is time and commitment. If the order can't be tied into a bigger order we'd need 20 people to get the costs down to a decent amount. Getting 20 names is the easy bit (it cost nothing to throw your hat into the ring!) but getting 20 paid orders is another matter. Then there's the time needed to field the innevitable but justifiable questions that come with spending £400 odd of people's hard earned. Thankfully most people will find the answers they need on this thread!

So, is there appetite for enough people to get seriously involved? I must admit I'm sceptical and the quality/service of the first batch did nothing for Pilkington's reputation on here but happy to support in any way I can if there's genuine commitment.

So I don't really have time to read 34 pages of posts so can I just ask a few simple questions as I like the idea of having one, especially as my sunroof has delaminated and looks a mess.

Is it "plug and play" i.e. you take out the old and put in the new or is there a lot more to it? If more to it do you modify the car at all to install it and how long should it take?

I would rate myself as an enthusiastic, but not overly capable DIYer, Will I end up getting frustrated and leaving it in the box (assuming it isn't plugged and play!)

Is there anyone in Surrey who could be a white knight when I fail to install it? ;)

Thanks

Plug and play really, sometimes the fixing need a little tightening our loosening off but that’s it

Thanks for confirming, if there is a group buy beingpulled together please count me in and I'll add its install to my spring to do list (change speakers, change stereo, get rust spots sorted, work out where the oil leak is, sort out the windscreen wipers etc.)
